Pakistan is edging closer to becoming an Islamist state—which would make it an ally of the Taliban rather than the West. This has dire implications for the stability of the nuclear-armed nation and for the Afghanistan war.
On Tuesday, a spokesman for Pakistan’s military said the peace agreement concluded February 17 between the provincial government in the country’s North-West Frontier Province and the Taliban has given the Islamist terrorist group the ability to regroup in that area. The agreement handed over the greater Swat region to the Taliban, allowing it to enforce its Islamist sharia law, supposedly in exchange for an end to its insurgency. That the Taliban clearly does not intend to uphold its end of the bargain is hardly a surprise. The terrorist group is merely using the promise of peace to manipulate the Pakistani government into handing it more power.
Islamabad, however, is allowing itself to be pushed into an increasingly untenable situation. Just last week, April 13, the Pakistani government formally ratified the February 17 peace deal. While the capitulation by the local government was a reflection of who really holds the power in the Swat tribal district, the national government’s stamp of approval on the agreement represented, in Stratfor’s words, “an acknowledgment of defeat on the part of the state”—making it extremely difficult for the state to ever regain control of this part of the country.
An overwhelming majority in Parliament approved the sharia deal, and the country’s president signed off on it. “Allowing a special political and legal dispensation in a given part of its territory essentially amounts to recognizing the autonomy of the region in question,” said Stratfor (April 14).
This recognition of what amounts to a Taliban emirate makes it increasingly likely that Pakistan will become an Islamist state. A growing number of U.S. officials fear just that, according to an April 16 McClatchy report. “It’s a disaster in the making on the scale of the Iranian revolution,” one U.S. intelligence official said.
A Pentagon adviser had this to say:
The place is beyond redemption. I don’t see any plausible scenario under which the present government or its most likely successor will mobilize the economic, political and security resources to push back this rising tide of violence.
I think Pakistan is moving toward a situation where the extremists control virtually all of the countryside and the government controls only the urban centers.
Last weekend, Maulana Sufi Muhammad, leader of the Taliban group in the Swat region, denounced Pakistan’s constitution, parliament and Supreme Court for being un-Islamic, and called for sharia law to be imposed throughout Pakistan. Maulana Abdul Aziz, the imam who instigated the uprising that led to the raid on the Red Mosque back in 2007, made similar comments after he was released on bail, calling on Pakistanis to be prepared to sacrifice in order for Islamic law to be enforced nationwide. “The Taliban not only have shown that they are unwilling to disarm,” writes Stratfor, “but their ambitions are escalating from a local to a national level” (April 22).
The direction Pakistan is going will make it increasingly difficult for the U.S. and nato to make progress in Afghanistan. It is likely that supply lines will become even more insecure or be cut completely. “… Western forces are looking at a long conflict,” said Stratfor, “one in which the jihadists, and not the United States and nato, will have the advantage called Pakistan” (op. cit.).
Herbert W. Armstrong gets to the core of the problem America faces in his book The United States and Britain in Prophecy:
You need to wake up to the fact that the United States, even still possessing unmatched power, is afraid—fears—to use it, just as God said: “I will break the pride of your power”; that the United States has stopped winning wars—that America was unable, with all its vast power, to conquer little North Vietnam! The United States is fast riding to the greatest fall that ever befell any nation!
Mr. Armstrong made these statements based on prophecies in Leviticus 26 as well as many others in the Bible. These prophecies explain why, despite its superior military, America seems helpless in making headway in Afghanistan. Request your own free copy of The United States and Britain in Prophecy for a detailed explanation of how America has arrived at this point, and what is ahead for this nation. •

Turkish-Syrian exercise prompts Israeli review of sophisticated arms sales to Ankara
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report
April 27, 2009, 3:21 PM (GMT+02:00)
Israel's Mark 3 Chariot tank
Israeli defense minister Ehud Barak commented Monday, April 27, that Turkey's decision to hold three days of military maneuvers with Syria is "disturbing."
And that is not all. The exercise will be accompanied Monday or Tuesday by the signing of a letter of intent between Turkish defense minister Vecdi Gonul and his Syrian counterpart Hassan Turkmani for cooperation in the defense industry.
DEBKAfile's military sources report that the signing and the exercise are major landmarks on the shrinking road of military and trading ties between Turkey and Israel. In 2009, Ankara pared exchanges down to $2.2 billion in 2009 and expanded its trade with Syria to $2.6 billion.
Israel is now in a hurry to slash its military exchanges with Turkey to prevent the leakage of military secrets to an avowed Arab enemy.
Ankara is furthermore defaulting on payments for military purchases and other contracts. It has piled up a debt of several million dollars to Israel's military and air industries, in payment for a $5 billion deal to build a Mark 3 Chariot plant in Turkey. Production of 1,000 Israeli tanks, to have been Turkey's main theater tank, should have begun in early 2009.
Construction is now halted.
Israel will also discontinue sales of its world-class unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) and sharply reduce its military ties with Turkey which go back to the 1960s.
DEBKAfile's military sources report that Ankara deliberately played up the scale of the joint exercise, in which Turkish and Syrian border units rather than substantial military forces are involved. Its disclosure was a strong statement of the Erdogan government's policy of trading its extensive strategic relations with Israel for ties with Syria.
For DEBKAfile's original exposure of the joint exercise click
Our sources stress that this trend began to emerge three years ago, although the Sharon and Olmert governments did their best to keep it out of sight. DEBKAfile's Ankara sources report that the indirect Israel-Syrian peace talks brokered by Turkey last year were used by prime minister Ehud Olmert to conceal this setback in Israel's foreign relations.
Furthermore, Israel's defense and foreign ministries as well as top IDF ranks held on to the conviction that the installment of a pro-Islamic government in Ankara would not detract from the long-held ties of cooperation and trust between Turkey and Israel.
DEBKAfile's intelligence sources report they misread the signals. The Turkish armed forces is no long the body it once was. The generals of today are in harmony with Recip Tayyep Erdogan's decision to turn Turkey's back on Israel.

Top hosts hold unprecedented summit to stop efforts at government control

WASHINGTON – Putting aside their own competitive interests, representatives of more than two dozen of the nation's top talk shows held an unprecedented private meeting over the weekend to brainstorm strategies against what they agreed are government plans by to squelch critical political speech on radio.
Organized by Brad O'Leary, author of the new book, "Shut Up, America! The End of Free Speech," and Joseph Farah, editor and chief executive officer of WND, the group chose one attendee to be spokesman and chairman of the coalition – syndicated host Roger Hedgecock of San Diego.
A daylong discussion today focused on what was described as the "imminent threat" of so-called "localism" requirements that will subject radio programming to the review by panels of community activists who will evaluate station content. These panels will be empowered to make recommendations for programming changes and challenge at the Federal Communications Commission the licenses renewals of stations that don't heed their advice.
Last month, Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., submitted an amendment to the D.C. Voting Bill which would require the FCC to "encourage and promote diversity in ... media ownership" and reaffirm FCC authority to mandate the presentation "of opposing points of view on issues of public importance."
Also of concern to the hosts and producers gathered in the nation's capital was a decision last week by Clear Channel, the nation's largest owner of radio stations, to mandate the creation of local advisory boards by June at all of its properties. The move was seen as pre-emptive as the industry anticipates an FCC stacked with Barack Obama appointees will soon require stations to answer to panels of community activists.
In February, the FCC floated several proposals to require stations to better serve local communities, including establishing community advisory boards to consult stations on programming.
"We are materially increasing our commitment to community programming, increasing our accountability and broadening our public-service contributions in every local market we serve," said John Hogan, president and chief executive officer of Clear Channel. "We believe when radio focuses on servicing local communities, it is radio at its finest."

100 days in office, coronated Messiah
Arms outstretched, he wears crown of thorns on his brow

"The Truth" by Michael D'Antuono |
On his 100th day in office, President Obama will be "crowned" in messianic imagery at New York City's Union Square.
Artist Michael D'Antuono's painting "The Truth" – featuring Obama with his arms outstretched and wearing a crown of thorns upon his head – will be unveiled on April 29 at the Square's South Plaza.
According to a statement released about the portrait, "The 30" x 54" acrylic painting on canvas depicts President Obama appearing much like Jesus Christ on the Cross: atop his head, a crown of thorns; behind him, the dark veil being lifted (or lowered) on the Presidential Seal. But is he revealing or concealing, and is he being crucified or glorified?"
Even the title of the piece, "The Truth," suggests a play on biblical themes, as Jesus said in John 14:6, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."
"More than a presidential portrait," writes D'Antuono on a website touting the painting, "'The Truth' is a politically, religiously and socially-charged statement on our nation's current political climate and deep partisan divide that is sure to create a dialogue."
Like others in the news who have depicted Obama in Christ-like imagery, D'Antuono insists he isn't claiming the man is Messiah, but only inviting "individual interpretations."
"'The Truth,' like beauty, is in the eyes of the beholder," claims the exhibit's press release.
D'Antuono even invites the public to email him with reactions to the piece, answering his posed question, "What's your truth?"
Clinton lands in Beirut, visits Hariri tomb
DEBKAfile Special Report

Hillary Clinton jumps into Lebanese thicket
US secretary of state Hillary Clinton dropped in on Beirut for a short suprise call, April 26, after spending a day in Iraq. She took the politically loaded step of a visit to the tomb of Lebanon's former prime minister, Rafiq Hariri, who was assassinated in 2005.
DEBKAfile's Middle East sources note that her visit comes a day before Daniel Bellemare, the UN tribunal prosecutor investigating the crime, is to announce whether to free or extradite the four Lebanese generals jailed in Beirut and wanted by the court on suspicion of a hand in the Lebanese prime minister's murder on the orders of Syrian military intelligence.
The Assad regime has gone to extraordinary lengths to quash the international legal proceedings for fear the Syrian president's close circle will be implicated in one of the most outrageous assassinations in recent Middle East history.
Lebanon goes to elections in June.

Why millions still demand proof Obama is constitutionally fit for office
1:00 am Eastern
© 2009 WorldNetDaily
With Barack Obama in the White House, millions of Americans are watching the news night after night in sheer shock, wondering out loud what the next unprecedented expansion of government power will be. Nationalizing entire industries with gigantic taxpayer bailouts; forcing taxpayers to fund abortion; releasing Gitmo prisoners onto U.S. streets; rapidly converting free-market, capitalist America into a government-run socialist state – every day seems to bring a new unconstitutional power-grab, critics say.
But arguably Obama’s most egregious, unconstitutional “power-grab” as president may have been his very first – being elected to the highest office in the land while steadfastly refusing to offer proof he is a “natural born citizen,” as required of all presidents by the U.S. Constitution.
That explosive story is the focus of the April 2009 edition of WND’s acclaimed Whistleblower magazine. It’s called “YOUR PAPERS, PLEASE? Why dozens of lawsuits and millions of Americans want Barack Obama to prove he's constitutionally qualified to be president.”
