'Defendants had to ensure

A new lawsuit is challenging Barack Obama's eligibility to be president, and this one targets Congress as a defendant for its "failure" to uphold the constitutional demand to make sure Obama qualified before approving the Electoral College vote that actually designated him as the occupant of the Oval Office.

The new case raises many of the same arguments as dozens of other cases that have flooded into courtrooms around the nation since the November election.

It is being brought on behalf of Charles F. Kerchner Jr., Lowell T. Patterson, Darrell James Lenormand and Donald H. Nelson Jr. and names as defendants Barack Hussein Obama II, the U.S., Congress, the Senate, House of Representatives and former Vice President Dick Cheney along with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Where's the proof Barack Obama was born in the U.S. or that he fulfills the "natural-born American" clause in the Constitution? If you still want to see it, join more than 193,000 others and sign up now!

As WND has reported, dozens of lawsuits have been filed over Obama's eligibility to assume the office of the president. Many have been dismissed while others remain pending.

The cases, in various ways, have alleged Obama does not meet the "natural born citizen" clause of the U.S. Constitution, Article 2, Section 1, which reads, "No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President."

Some of the legal challenges have alleged Obama was not born in Hawaii, as he insists, but in Kenya. Obama's American mother, the suits contend, was too young at the time of his birth to confer American citizenship to her son under the law at the time.

Other challenges have focused on Obama's citizenship through his father, a Kenyan subject to the jurisdiction of the United Kingdom at the time of his birth, thus making him a dual citizen. The cases contend the framers of the Constitution excluded dual citizens from qualifying as natural born.

Several details of Obama's past have added twists to the question of his eligibility and citizenship, including his family's move to Indonesia when he was a child, his travel to Pakistan in the '80s when such travel was forbidden to American citizens and conflicting reports from Obama's family about his place of birth.

What critics missed about treasury chief
Geithner presided over Wall Street collapse as regional Fed president

Timothy Geithner
NEW YORK – While the nomination of Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner generated plenty of heat because of his failure to pay income taxes for five years, almost unnoticed amid the controversy is the fact that he presided over the failure of some of the largest banking institutions in the world – institutions he was charged with overseeing and regulating as head of the New York region of the Federal Reserve Bank.

On Nov. 17, 2003, Geithner became the ninth president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank, a position he held until he was nominated by President Obama as treasury secretary.

The Federal Reserve's charter makes it responsible for the strength of the financial institutions operating in each of its 12 regional districts. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York presides over Wall Street-based financial institutions.

The New Washington, DC Paradigm Does Not Bode Well for Economic Recovery or Gun Ownership

Friday, January 30, 2009

Do you think that people are finally realizing that something is UP?

LEE COUNTY, GA (WALB) - South Georgia gun dealers say there is a growing shortage of certain types of high powered rifle ammunition.

Solo Archery says they can't fill the large requests they have for .223 caliber, .308, and 762 by 39 caliber shells.

Those are high powered bullets used in military style weapons.

Solo Archery manager Phillip Colson says there has been a growing shortage this fall, as more ammo goes to the Middle East, manufacturers make less, and now speculators have become involved.

Colson said "They've lost their money in the stock market, so they are buying both ammunition and hardware. Guns, magazine,s, and accessories for speculation. Potentially six months down the line they can resell the stuff for twice what it's worth right now."

Resistance to Nazi oppression was hampered by the lack of civilian arms possession. They were able to temporarily stop deportations of Jews to Nazi extermination camps.

Kidnapping is OK, but gun ownership is not!

Sportsmen and gun owners should be prepared to lose their Second Amendment rights.

President Obama, along with his gun-hating vice president, have stacked the deck with the appointments of Rahm Emanuel as chief of staff and Eric Holder as attorney general.

These four, along with Nancy Pelosi and a Democratic Congress, spell certain death for the Second Amendment. They are strong advocates of banning gun ownership by citizens and are now in position to carry out their fervor.

As deputy attorney general under President Clinton, Mr. Holder worked hard to restrict gun ownership. However, he had no such compunction to restrict their use in the predawn kidnapping of Elian Gonzalez in 2000.

France on Strike

January 29, 2009 | From theTrumpet.com

As the economy goes down, the French revive their national pastime.

Hundreds of thousands of French workers are going on strike this afternoon as unions and opposition leaders protest their government’s handling of the economic crisis. Train drivers, air traffic control operators, teachers, postal workers, bank employees and ski lift operators, to name a few, will refuse to work.

These protests will cause massive disruption. In some places, only one in five trains will be operating. Despite this, the general strike is very popular. One poll found that almost 70 percent of those surveyed support, or sympathize with, the strike.

Europe retreats from socialism

How ironic is it that the U.S. is embracing socialism at the very moment Europe and many other parts of the world are running away from it?

Somebody needs to ask Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi about this.

In the past five years, 33 countries, including 20 in socialist Europe, always held up as the example for a new American economic model by Democrats, have cut their personal income taxes, according to a study by KPMG, the giant accounting firm.

In the past four years, 60 countries have cut their corporate income tax rates.

Why have they done it?

Simple.

They want to compete more effectively for capital and human resources.

Basically, the world has been turned upside-down – with territories even under Communist control recognizing that low taxes is what drives burgeoning economies.

Turkish premier storms out of Davos after run-in with Israeli president

Turkish premier berates Israel at Davos

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan Thursday, Jan. 29, reproached Israeli president Shimon Peres over the Gaza offensive, saying "You kill people," continuing the abuse he has leveled against Israel in recent weeks.

Israeli president Shimon Peres said, raising his voice, Israel's 22-day offensive was launched in reaction to eight years of rocket fire. Turning to Erdogan, who had said Israel had made Gaza an "open air prison," Peres asked: "Why did they fire rockets? There was no siege against Gaza. There was never a day of starvation in Gaza."

The former Norwegian prime minister, Khell Magne Bondevik, said he had never seen Shimon Peres so passionate. I think he felt Israel was being attacked by so many in the international community. He felt isolated."

The Turkish premier stalked out of the forum when the moderator, Washington Post columnist David Ignatius, cut him short when he tried to reply. He complained Peres had spoken for 25 minutes while he had been allotted only 12 and shouted: "I remember two former prime ministers in your country who said they felt very happy when they were able to enter Palestine on tanks." He went on to protest the applause Peres had won: "You are applauding killing and war!"

Arab League secretary Amr Mussa said Erdogan's action in leaving the hall was understandable. Of Israel, he said: "They don't listen."

Peres read out passages from the Hamas charter which call for Israel's destruction. "I want to see what you would do if rockets landed on Istanbul every night. What would you say to the mothers?" he asked the Turkish prime minister. Since 2000, more than a thousand Israelis have been killed in terrorist attacks and more than 5,500 rockets have been dropped on Israel."

He again raised his voice when he said: "You talk about a non-existent reality and I am telling the truth. Can you understand a million people living in shelters? Are you mad? I cannot accept lies. Mubarak accused Hamas and he knows the situation as well as you, Mr. Erdogan. Hamas fired out of kindergartens and schools. How could we not respond?"

"All Peres said was a lie. It was unacceptable," said Erdogan as he left. He warned there would be repercussions on relations between Turkey and Israel. "I am a prime minister and no one shouts at me," he said.

The Israeli leader later called the Turkish premier and they agreed the incident would not affect relations between their countries.

Obama 'friend': End of Israel 'within reach' Activist boasts 'Western support, complicity' starting to crack

Ali Abunimah
JERUSALEM – Accusing the Jewish state of "genocide," an anti-Israel Palestinian activist once commended by President Obama has predicted the end of Israel, which, he boasted, is "within reach, in our lifetimes."

In a piece earlier this month titled, "Why Israel won't survive," Ali Abunimah, co-founder of Electronic Intifada, a pro-Palestinian online publication, accused Israel of war crimes and gloated, "Now, the other pillar of Israeli power – Western support and complicity – is starting to crack. We must do all we can to push it over."

"It is Israel as a Zionist state, not Palestine or the Palestinian people, that cannot survive this attempted genocide. Its problem is legitimacy, or rather a profound and irreversible lack of it," wrote Abunimah.

When I read the headline to Jerome Corsi's story, "Economic meltdown excuse for 'new world'' at WorldNetDaily yesterday, my first thought was, "What took them so long?"

That thought was immediately followed by the realization that the timing is just about perfect. Corsi zeroed in on comments by Klaus Schwab, founder of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland – specifically, Schwab's comment that the global economic crisis was a "transformational crisis" useful in reshaping a "new world."

One of the scarier quotes in his piece was from a professor Nouriel Roubini who said the global banking system was "effectively insolvent," which, to my untrained ears, sounds a lot like "bankrupt."

The last time this happened was in 1933, forcing the federal government to ban private ownership of gold so it could be confiscated and used to satisfy the government's creditors.

That was the national bankruptcy that predicated the Great Depression, which allowed Franklin Delano Roosevelt's administration to ram through the socialist "New Deal" policies that economic historians say made the Depression both longer and deeper than it needed to be.

Iran's blocked Gaza aid ship is now control-and-command HQ for Hamas

DEBKAfile Excllusive Report

Iranian "aid ship" for Gaza

Iranian "aid ship" for Gaza

DEBKAfile's military and intelligence sources report that the aid ship Iran Shahed , which the Israel embargo of the Gaza Strip forced to stay 42 km from the coast, took delivery Monday, Jan. 26 of sophisticated communications equipment from Cyprus for maintaining contact with Hamas leaders who remain in hiding. It came with a group of maintenance engineers.

The Iran Shahed set out from the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas Dec. 29, the second day of the Gaza conflict, as a Red Crescent aid ship loaded with humanitarian and medical supplies for the Palestinian population.

On Jan. 13, when it reached a point 30 km from the shores of Gaza, the aid ship was surrounded by Israeli missile ships and ordered to leave the 40km zone blockaded by Israel at the outset of its Gaza operation. This was Day 18. When the captain failed to respond, a missile boat escorted it none too gently into international water.

Tehran has meanwhile airlifted to its embassy in Nicosia a group of military men in civvies, including intelligence and Revolutionary Guards officers, who are setting up a military ground staff base to support the ship's operations for Hamas. They have also hired Cypriot craft to shuttle between Cyprus and the "aid ship."

Western naval intelligence sources say the vessel has been converted into a floating logistical headquarters for the Hamas leadership, with Hamas frogmen using fishing boats to keep them connected. They believe the converted ship is the first link in a protective belt the Iranians are throwing around the Hamas leadership in Gaza.

Last week, Tehran asked Cairo for permission to fly a group of 20 journalists and photographers to Cairo on their way to the Gaza Strip to report on the situation there. Our sources report that five members of the group were bone fides press people, the rest Iranian undercover agents for attachment to Hamas' Gaza command. Cairo withheld permission.

Death by firing squad possible in U.S. state
Persons convicted of capital murder would be executed by 5-officer team

British firing squad stages execution of German spy during World War I

One state lawmaker is proposing a bill to expand the death penalty and force people convicted of homicide to face execution by a five-officer firing squad.

New Hampshire State Rep. Delmar Burridge, D-Keene, is sponsoring H.B. 37, a bill providing for execution by firing squad for anyone who causes the death of another person by use of a firearm while engaged in the commission of a felony – an offense that would be considered capital murder under Burridge's plan.

According to the bill, the commissioner of the department of corrections will be required to select five peace officers to carry out the execution of defendants convicted of capital murder.

"The commissioner or designee shall ensure that the method of judgment of death specified in the warrant is carried out at a secure correctional facility operated by the department at an hour determined by the department on the date specified in the warrant," it states.

Get the DVD that proves once and for all why you need to pack heat and shoot back, available only from Shop.WND.com!

Current law includes murder of judges, law enforcement personnel, murder for hire, some drug-related homicides and rape-murders as capital offenses, but Burridge is seeking to add homicide during an armed robbery, or other felonies committed with a weapon, to the list – excluding such criminals from the standard death by lethal injection.

"A firing squad is more humane, reliable and quick. And perfectly matches the crime with the punishment," Burridge said last week.

Obama's illegal aunt seeks asylum
'This type of obstinacy and persistence is well known to the family'

Obama's aunt Zeituni Onyang

President Barack Obama's illegal alien aunt has enlisted the help of an immigration lawyer to help her win asylum and stay in the United States.

Margaret Wong and Associates is representing Zeituni Onyango, the 56-year-old Kenyan half-sister of Obama's deceased father, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. Onyango and her lawyer are scheduled to attend an immigration hearing in Boston on April 1.

"The judge will be looking at evidence that they may not have been aware of four years ago," Michael Rogers, spokesman for Wong, told the newspaper. "Wong is optimistic. We would have preferred to not conduct this case in the media spotlight, but that's not going to happen."

Onyango, revealed in November to be dwelling on Flaherty Way in a South Boston slum, has been living in the United States illegally, refusing to leave the U.S. for her Kenyan homeland after a judge rejected her request for asylum in 2004.

Boston Housing Authority spokesman Bill McGonagle told the Boston Herald she received a small stipend for working six hours a week as a volunteer resident health advocate in her complex.

"Auntie Zeituni" made a $260 campaign contribution to her nephew's presidential bid from a work address in the city. She proudly displayed photos of Obama, including some that appear as old as 25 years, inside her first-floor apartment, McGonagle said.

The Bush administration issued a directive requiring high-level approval before agents could arrest fugitive immigrants on Oct. 31, the Associated Press reported. Immigration and Customs Enforcement documents

reveal U.S. officials were concerned about implications of detaining Onyango in the days before the election.

"The Homeland Security

Department censored parts of the document before turning it over to the AP, citing privacy and law enforcement reasons for withholding some of the information, including the name of the person who sent the e-mail," the AP revealed. "It also blacked out the names of recipients of the directive, making it impossible to determine whether it was sent to anyone outside the department or outside government."

ICE spokeswoman Kelly Nantel said the order was lifted by the end of November.

Israeli air raids struck a Hamas target in Khan Younes, inflicting at least 10 Palestinian casualties Thursday, Jan. 29, after two missiles aimed at Sderot from Gaza early that morning landed in the Shear Hanegev region.

The first pair was fired Wednesday. Overnight, the Israeli Air force struck a missile workshop in the southern Gaza town of Rafah. DEBKAfile's military circles report that in the 48 hours since a roadside bomb from Gaza killed an Israeli soldier and injured three, Hamas has reverted to its tit-for-tat cycle in an effort to demonstrate who makes the rules.

Earlier, we reported that the approach of a fresh Gaza flare-up caused defense minister Ehud Barak to cancel his trip this week to Washington for talks with US defense secretary Robert Gates. Wednesday, as Barack Obama's Middle East envoy George Mitchell met with Israeli leaders in Jerusalem, Hamas fired its first two Qassam missiles and several mortar rounds into southern Israel since the 22-day conflict was halted by ceasefires. In Damascus, meanwhile Hamas and other radical Palestinian leaders rejected Cairo's plan for a long-term truce, demanding the reopening of all the Gaza crossings first.

This rejection was backed by the fresh round of missiles and mortar shells from Gaza.

Hamas was signaling its intention to revert to pummeling southern Israel again with rockets and missiles if its armed forces resorted to major retaliation for the fatal roadside bomb.

Until Hamas-Damascus slapped down its veto, Egypt had hoped for a long-term truce to begin on Feb. 5, followed by a power-sharing conference between the warring Palestinian factions on Feb. 22. The timeline was announced by Egyptian foreign minister Aboul Gheit.

But Hamas' rejection has taken Cairo back to square one. The Egyptians believe that a good military hiding by Israel will bring the Palestinian Islamist extremists back to the negotiation table in a more reasonable frame of mind. This situation prompted Barak's remark that another Hamas attack or two is to be expected soon.

Israeli and Egyptian leaders updated Mitchell Wednesday and explained why the ceasefire which he sought to consolidate during his Middle East tour had become untenable. Cairo and Jerusalem were equally resigned to another round of hostilities before diplomacy could take off.

Our military sources stress that the Israeli air strike which killed a Hamas member of the bomb squad in Khan Younis Tuesday night and its bombardment of three Philadelphi Corridor smuggling tunnels early Wednesday were but a foretaste of the reprisals the Israel military has in store for curbing further Hamas aggression.

Israeli air force bombs Philadelphi corridor in three waves

January 28, 2009, 10:11 AM (GMT+02:00)

Israeli towns and communities within rocket and missile range of the Gaza Strip were on tense alert after the Israeli air force struck the Philadekphi corridor border tunnels before dawn Wednesday, Jan. 28. Punishment was promised Hamas after a large roadside bomb blew up an Israel border patrol jeep outside Gaza early Tuesday, killing one Israel soldier and injuring three, one seriously, one week into the Gaza ceasefire.

Several smuggling tunnels caved in under the aerial bombardment. This may not be the end of Israel's response. Barack Obama's Middle East envoy George Mitchell is due in Jerusalem later Wednesday for his first visit. If Hamas goes back to firing rockets, he will land in the middle of another Gaza war.

US military chief confirms interception of Gaza-bound Iranian arms ship

DEBKAfile Exclusive Report

January 28, 2009, 10:19 AM (GMT+02:00)

Adm. Mullen, Chairman of US Joint Chiefs of Staff

Adm. Mullen, Chairman of US Joint Chiefs of Staff

Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen said Jan. 28 the US Navy had intercepted a Cypriot-flagged ship in the Red Sea last week and searched it with the captain's permission for Iranian arms bound for the Gaza Strip.

This Iranian arms ship was first revealed exclusively by DEBKAfile on Jan. 20 and tracked further on Jan. 23 and Jan. 25. Click HERE|http://www.debka.com/headline.php?hid=5873}.

The Navy had done all it could do legally but was not authorized to seize the weapons," said Mullen, adding he would like authority to act in such cases. The vessel was expected in port in Syria this week, he said.

DEBKAfile's military sources disclose that it is bound for Latakia, where It will dock alongside the Russian guided missile destroyer Admiral Chabanenko . After the US Navy allowed it to continue its voyage through Suez, the Iranian vessel's captain called Tehran for instructions and was told to proceed to this Syrian port and unload its arms consignment for Hamas, including a fresh supply of rockets. Entering the Mediterranean on Jan. 26, the Iranian ship found three waiting three armadas – Israeli warships, the US Sixth Fleet and the Chabanenko. They all stayed close to the vessel – each with its own agenda: The first two blocked its access to the shores of Gaza, while the Russian destroyer kept watch for developments. But there were no further developments because, as Adm. Mullen complained, there are no international mechanisms authorizing its seizure.

Speaking to reporters in Washington the American admiral said he had long favored approaches to Iran. "To the degree that we are able to dialogue with them, find some mutual interests, there is potential there for moving ahead together," he said. He then added cautiously: "Iran is unhelpful in man, many ways in many, many areas, so I wouldn't be overly optimistic at this point.

What did president tell Supreme Court? Lawyer in eligibility case seeks records of secret discussions

A lawyer whose case challenging Barack Obama's eligibility to occupy the Oval Office was denied a hearing in the U.S. Supreme Court says she will demand records of a meeting between the justices and the president.

California lawyer Orly Taitz, who has several cases pending over the issue of Obama's status as a "natural born" citizen, told WND she will take action soon.

Her case was the most recent on which the Supreme Court held a "conference," an off-the-record discussion at which justices discuss whether to take a case. Taitz told WND the justices decided Jan. 23 to deny her case a hearing on its merits.

The result was the same for previous cases brought by Philip Berg, whose information is on his ObamaCrimes.com website, as well as Cort Wrotnowski.

Like Berg's cases, Taitz said hers now reverts to the lower court, where it was pending when her emergency appeals were submitted to the Supreme Court.

Unemployment Still Rising, Fast

January 28, 2009 | From theTrumpet.com

The job market looks bleak around the world.

More than 76,000 job cuts were announced by firms in the United States and Europe on Monday.

U.S. firms, including Caterpillar, Sprint Nextel and Home Depot, announced a total of 45,000 job cuts. Since December 2007, the U.S. has lost 2.59 million jobs. The unemployment rate rose to 7.2 percent last month. Economists worry that as many as 600,000 jobs are being lost each month.

“This is a big deal,” said the director of the Center for Economic and Research Policy, Dean Baker. “We’re losing jobs at an incredibly rapid rate, and even with that, I’m worried they’re accelerating. We’re seeing a much more rapid rate of layoff announcements.”

European firms such as Philips and ing also announced large job cuts. In Britain, the government is even thinking about introducing a three-day week—where the government pays firms to operate for only three days a week rather than lay off workers.

In this climate, how can you make sure you keep your job? And what can you do to find another if you do lose it?

At the turn of the century, Elbert Hubbard wrote a short article describing the type of man who is never without work for long. His essay was printed and reprinted around the world. A copy was given to every man enlisted in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corp during both world wars. “Civilization is one long anxious search for just such individuals,” he wrote. “Anything such a man asks shall be granted; his kind is so rare that no employer can afford to let him go. He is wanted in every city, town and village—in every office, shop, store and factory. The world cries out for such: He is needed, and needed badly.”

What sort of man is this? He is resourceful. He is industrious. He has initiative. He simply listens to what his boss tells him to do and does it. Hubbard described such a man in detail in his essay “A Message to Garcia.”

But in today’s abnormal climate, such a man may still find himself without work, laid off with hundreds, or thousands, of others. What can he do then?

He must apply the same diligence and resourcefulness toward finding a job. Make a full-time job out of finding a job.

For seven practical steps to take if you do find yourself without work, see our article “How to Find a Good Job.” In today’s climate, finding a job can be tricky, but with God’s help it is possible. For more on how to succeed no matter what life throws at you, read our booklet The Seven Laws of Success.

This is momentous. At 4.00 o'clock this morning, Senator Barrack Obama called me at midnight and told me: "Mr. Vice President, could you make sure you sort out this problem?" I want to assure him that the problem has since been sorted out...."

"Kenya is going to receive a lot of attention, but let it not be negative because we are the home of the President-Elect of the USA."

Gloom deepens as 76,000 jobs go in a day

By FT Reporters

Published: January 26 2009 14:50 | Last updated: January 27 2009 09:21

Corporate bellwethers in the US and Europe on Monday slashed more than 76,000 jobs from their payrolls to confront the deepening economic downturn, marking one of the most brutal days yet for workers on both sides of the Atlantic.

US corporate groups such as Caterpillar, General Motors, Sprint Nextel. Texas Instruments, and Home Depot led the retreat, as the domestic recession coupled with tough export markets continued to take a heavy toll on their businesses. Pfizer, the drugs group, added to the tally saying jobs would be lost in its takeover of Wyeth.

Large European companies such as Philips, the Dutch electronics company, financial group ING and the Anglo-Dutch steelmaker Corus, which is owned by India’s Tata Group, struck the same downbeat tone as they unveiled plans to axe staff.

More clashes in store after Palestinian bomb blast kills an Israeli soldier, injures three

January 27, 2009, 2:23 PM (GMT+02:00)

Palestinian bomb blows up Israel patrol outside Gaza fence

Palestinian bomb blows up Israel patrol outside Gaza fence

A week after Israeli forces exited the Gaza Strip, Palestinians Tuesday, Jan. 27, detonated a large explosive device against a routine Israeli military patrol near the Kissufim crossing. One soldier was killed and three were injured, one seriously. DEBKAfile's military sources expect further clashes after defense minister Ehud Barak warned that Israel would respond to the Palestinians' unacceptable breach of the ceasefire.

According to those sources, Hamas initiated the clash for the benefit of US president Barack Obama's Middle East envoy George Mitchell the day before he arrives for his first visit to the region. It was a reminder to Washington that hostilities in Gaza would not end so long as Washington ignores Hamas. The Palestinian Islamist terrorists will probably continue their attacks including resumed missile fire against Israel, to which the IDF is bound to respond.

But Hamas will be heartened by Israel's failure to respond at once. Israel's war planners, after declaring at the end of Operation Cast Lead that the IDF's deterrent strength had been repaired and it would take Hamas a very long time to revert to violence, ought to have kept instant reprisal plans ready to whip out for contingencies such as Tuesday's attack.

It was obvious quite soon that Hamas had not thrown in the towel, as DEBKAfile reported in its exclusive analysis Saturday Jan. 24. Click HERE.

They are reigniting the flames in Gaza to show the US president that his instruction to his envoy to stabilize the ceasefire is meaningless because neither he, Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak or Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert can make a ceasefire hold without Hamas' concurrence.

So, whether or not Israel opts for restraint, Hamas will seek to underscore this point by escalating the violence, at the same time seeking to refute Israel's claim of restored deterrence. For these Palestinian extremists, the war on Israel is nowhere near over.

The time-lag between the Palestinian attack and Israel's response exposes Jerusalem's commitment to consult with Washington and Cairo before taking any further action under the understandings the reached over the Gaza operation. These understandings, reached by Israel's war troika, the prime minister, defense minister and foreign minister Tzipi Livni, are proving now too ungainly and unclear to fit the realities of Gaza and therefore ill-judged for the sort of rapid response Israel must make to stamp out Hamas' war initiatives.

Earlier, we reported that Israeli tanks fired shells into southern Gaza at the outset of the incident. The Palestinians reported one person killed.

Arab and Western media report Israeli infantry troops have entered the Gaza Strip and IDF helicopters are overhead.

This was the first major clash since Israel and the Palestinians declared separate ceasefires last week. After the Palestinian bombing attack Tuesday morning, the Israeli army closed the Gaza crossings to aid convoys scheduled to have transited Tuesday, as they did throughout the 22 days of Israel's Gaza operation.

Egypt cracks the whip for Hamas in long-term truce talks

DEBKAfile Exclusive Report

January 25, 2009, 11:10 PM (GMT+02:00)

Egyptian Gen. Omar Suleiman, chief negotiator with Hamas

Egyptian Gen. Omar Suleiman, chief negotiator with Hamas

The Hamas delegation to the long-term truce talks for Gaza in Cairo Sunday, Jan. 25, was given no leeway by Egyptian intelligence minster Gen. Omar Suleiman, Cairo's senior negotiator, DEBKAfile's military sources disclose. This contradicts the impression given by Hamas.

Either accept our terms, he told them with exceptional brusqueness, or wait two-three months and take your chances on a new Israel government to rise after its Feb. 10 general election.

Their only other option now, said Suleiman, was to return to Damascus, implying that he was throwing Hamas on the mercies of Syrian president Bashar Assad.

When Hamas asked for Turkish monitors to be posted at the Rafah crossing, Suleiman said: Here's the Turkish prime minister's phone number. Call him yourselves.

So saying, the Egyptian minister left the conference room, leaving junior officials behind to hear Hamas' responses, which were uniformly negative.

These are the conditions Cairo put before the Palestinian Islamist organization:

1. Hamas must pledge to halt all smuggling into the Gaza Strip, including arms.

2. It must accept a long-term truce for Gaza. DEBKAfile reports Israel is demanding 10-15 years, to be renewed every three or four, while Suleiman proposed a 10-year period.

3. Hamas armed men will respect a 1 km-off limits belt inside the Gazan-Israeli Israeli border fence, refrain from sniper fire and planting explosives.

4. Hamas must keep its distance from all Gaza's crossings – 6 on the border with Israel, and one, the Rafah gateway to Egyptian Sinai.

5. The verbal abuse of Egypt must stop forthwith.

The Hamas delegates were summarily brushed aside when they asked for Egyptian help to reconstruct the Gaza Strip. Suleiman said assistance would be forthcoming when the Palestinian factions healed their feud and formed a national unity government – meaning when Hamas accepted the Fatah leader Mahmoud Abbas' Palestinian Authority rule in the Gaza Strip.

DEBKAfile adds: Hamas came to the Cairo negotiating table in an inferior position. Most its top leaders in Gaza have not ventured to come out of hiding since before Israel's Gaza operation began on Dec. 27, for fear that the people will vent their fury over the calamity the Hamas-government brought down on the enclave.

KUWAIT

MOORESVILLE, N.C., Jan. 23 (UPI) -- The government of Kuwait has contracted Internet-based radiation emergency products suppler Nukepills.com for a citizen protection initiative.

U.S. company Nukepills.com was awarded the contract from the Kuwaiti Ministry of Health. Under the approximately $1.4 million deal, Nukepills.com will supply 5.4 million of its trademarked ThyroShield potassium iodide doses.

Kuwait awarded the contract for the ThyroShield doses as part of an effort to stockpile nuclear radiation emergency protections. Officials say the ThyroShield is a liquid medicine that has thyroid-blocking capabilities to prevent thyroid cancer during radiation emergencies.

"This sale is the first large-scale order of ThyroShield from a foreign government," Troy Jones, Nukepills.com president, said in a statement.

"We are currently working on additional potassium iodide orders from other countries in the Middle East, Europe and Asia. We hope the new U.S. administration follows Kuwait's lead and reinstitutes the potassium iodide distribution plan to protect its citizens."

The Democrats' game plan

Posted: January 26, 2009
1:00 am Eastern

© 2009

I am now convinced President Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, other key leaders in the Democratic Party and the new administration realize they have no viable solutions to the economic crisis, know their own plans are going to exacerbate the problems and have concluded the only hope of maintaining absolute power beyond 2010 will depend on their ability to demonize their opponents and the Bush administration.

So much for hope and change.

If I had any doubts about their own perceptions, they were dispelled over the weekend when Democrat leaders went into overdrive lowering expectations – expectations that had been raised so high during the 2008 election.

For instance:

  • Biden said: "There's been no good news, and there's no good news on the immediate horizon."
  • Lawrence Summers, head of the president's National Economic Council, told NBC's "Meet the Press" that Americans will need to be patient: "These problems weren't made in a day or a week or a month or even a year, and they're not going to get solved that fast. The next few months are, no question, going to be very, very difficult and it may be longer than that."
  • Pelosi told George Stephanopoulos on ABC's "This Week" that "some increased investment" may be necessary and that spending the money would likely be tied to more government involvement in the banking sector: "Whatever you want to call it, if we are going to put money into the banks, we certainly want equity for the American people. In other words, if we are strengthening them, then the American people should get some of the upside of that strengthening. Some people call that nationalization … I'm not talking about total ownership."

The only ideas being put forward by the Democrats are the very ideas that created the crisis in the first place – more government intrusion into the economy, more bailouts of failed financial and industrial institutions, more command-and-control policies from Washington, more picking of winners and losers among businesses and, of course, more spending and more debt.

All of this is doomed to failure, and the Democrats know it.

Their only hope is to buy enough time for themselves until the economy can turn around on its own in cyclical fashion. But they clearly recognize that is not going to happen in the next two years – and probably not in four.

Imagine how horrifying that realization is to them – not just because of what it portends for America between now and 2012, but, more importantly, what it means to the political fortunes of a party that has just succeeded in getting a monopoly grip on power it has not experienced in 14 years.

That leaves only four options for the Democrats:

  • lowering the expectations they raised so high in 2006 and 2008;
  • blaming Republicans for everything for the next four years;
  • seducing and compromising Republicans to join them in their plans;
  • attempting to criminalize past policy decisions by Republicans through an endless series of partisan investigations and demonizations;

Democrats now in control, say economy to get worse 'There's been no good news and there's no good news on the immediate horizon'

Vice President Joe Biden

Democrats on television this weekend acted quickly on the heels of Obama's inauguration to temper hopes that a change in administration necessarily means a swift economic recovery.

"There's been no good news," said Vice President Joe Biden on CBS' "Face the Nation," "and there's no good news on the immediate horizon."

Lawrence Summers, head of the president's National Economic Council, told NBC's "Meet the Press" that Americans will need to be patient.

"These problems weren't made in a day or a week or a month or even a year, and they're not going to get solved that fast," Summers said. "The next few months are, no question, going to be very, very difficult and it may be longer than that."

Instead, the newly empowered party is asking for more time, money and power to attempt its fix on the nation's economic woes.

Congress has already given Obama permission to spend the second $350 billion of a bailout package approved last fall, and the president is pushing Congress to pass an additional $825 billion economic recovery package.

House Speaker Nanci Pelosi further told George Stephanopoulos on ABC's "This Week" that "some increased investment" may be necessary and that spending the money would likely be tied to more government involvement in the banking sector.

Iceland: Financial Crisis Brings Down Government

January 26, 2009 | From theTrumpet.com

Governments across Europe are taking note as the financial crisis claims another victim.

Violent protests and growing dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of the economic crisis caused Iceland’s Prime Minister Geir Haarde to call for early elections Friday.

Iceland had its worst street riots in 50 years as 2,000 protesters—out of a population of just 320,000—took to the streets of Reykjavik on Thursday, hurling paving stones at Iceland’s parliament building. The day before, protesters threw eggs and soft drinks at Haarde.

Iceland’s economy has been hit hard by the financial crisis, and the people are holding the government responsible. Unemployment has risen sharply; inflation is also rising. Economists predict the economy will shrink by 10 percent.

Pirates Expose America’s Broken Will

In 1785, Dey Muhammad of Algiers declared war on America’s fledgling confederation of colonies by abducting several American merchant ships in the Mediterranean and holding their crews for ransom or selling them into Moroccan slave markets.

Before the Revolution, America’s oceangoing vessels had relied solely on Great Britain’s naval and diplomatic power for protection against pirate brigades. After winning independence from Britain during the Revolution, however, American ships were left to themselves in facing the perilous dangers of traversing the sea along the Barbary Coast.

Alarmed by the hijackings and fearing it would be perceived as weak by its enemies, America’s earliest reformers argued for a more powerful central government. In “The Federalist No. 41,” for example, James Madison wrote that a stronger federal government was needed to “maintain a navy” that would “be a principal source of her security against danger from abroad.” America’s international trade and commerce, Madison wrote, “the great reservoir of its wealth, lies every moment at the mercy of events, and may almost be regarded as a hostage for ignominious compliances with the dictates of a foreign enemy, or even with the rapacious demands of pirates and barbarians” (emphasis mine throughout).

In replacing the Articles of Confederation with the United States Constitution in 1789, the founders gave the federal government the power it needed to levy taxes on its citizenry, to raise and support a national army, to provide and maintain a navy and to declare war on enemy combatants.

Even after it adopted the Constitution, many of America’s founders remained wary of a powerful centralized government—particularly one with an established naval force. But the scourge of piracy in the waters of the Mediterranean helped tip the balance in favor of naval shipbuilding. “The majority of the members of Congress, irrespective of their feelings toward federalism, could no longer bear the disgrace of kowtowing to Barbary,” Michael Oren wrote in Power, Faith and Fantasy.

“The liberation of our citizens has an intimate connection with the liberation of our commerce in the Mediterranean,” said then Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson. President George Washington added, “If we desire to avoid insult, we must be able to repel it.”

So Congress authorized the construction of six frigates, and the U.S. Navy was born. Soon after, the United States of America waged its first overseas war—against pirates of the Mediterranean.

Somalia Again Humbles American Might

Today, more than 200 years later, the United States has the largest, most powerful navy in the world—by far. Yet last November, Somali pirates aboard speed boats embarrassed the American superpower when they hijacked a massive oil tanker bound for the U.S. through a waterway patrolled by the U.S. Fifth Fleet.

Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, admitted to being “stunned” by the “extraordinary rise” in hijacking attempts. In a 12-day period in November, Somali pirates seized nine vessels passing through the Gulf of Aden. All totaled, as of mid-December 19 ships and at least 383 crew members were being held hostage by Somalia. Yet Vice Adm. William E. Gortney, who commands the Fifth Fleet, told the New York Times that there were no plans to rescue any of them.

The most powerful naval force in the world simply will not act!

Admiral Mullen complained about “legal and military obstacles” to fighting piracy. “One of the challenges that you have in piracy, clearly, is, if you are intervening and you capture pirates, is there a path to prosecute them?” Mullen said (New York Times, Nov. 19, 2008).

This is what most concerns America’s military brass—whether or not pirates can be prosecuted?

After some criticism had been leveled at the United States for not taking a lead role in defeating the pirates, Defense Department Press Secretary Geoff Morrell strenuously defended the Navy. “This notion that there’s inaction out there is just utterly false,” Morrell said at a press conference. Morrell admitted that the Navy was at least partly responsible for protecting international shipping lanes. “But the companies … also have an obligation to secure their ships to prevent incidents such that we’ve been seeing at alarming rates over the past several months,” he added, suggesting companies take additional precautions like adding armed guards.

What a comfort that must be to international shipping merchants: You’re on your own fellas! And think of the clear message America’s inaction sends to hostile powers.

In the days of Washington, Adams and Jefferson, America was concerned about being perceived as weak. Not anymore!

Regarding the oil tanker en route to America, the U.S. Navy knows where the captured ship is located. It even has permission from the United Nations to enter Somali waters in pursuit of the pirates.

But it lacks the will to act.

“We know where these guys live and where their ships and boats operate from—it’d be a simple mission to take them out,” a retired Marine general told Time. “There was talk of the U.S. military doing some kind of mission—the Navy would love to do it—but there’s no stomach for it right now” (Nov. 19, 2008).

Awesome military might—and pitifully weak willpower to go with it.

The pirates are hearing this message loud and clear. After capturing the oil tanker, they audaciously attacked an American cruise ship, one of 30 vessels they went after in a period of just two months. They know good and well America has “no stomach” to stop them. America’s top military brass no longer view aggressive action against murderous thugs as a commonsense approach to combating terrorism.

That approach, however, is now being employed by other, much less powerful nations. Take India, for example. On November 18, a pirate ship launched grenades on the Indian ship Tabar and then attempted to ram the vessel. But instead of running away from the would-be hijackers, the Indians fired back—sinking one of the pirates’ mother ships! It was the second ship the Indians sank in two weeks.

The Investor’s Business Daily noted that India’s approach “contrasts sharply with the handwringing helplessness of other navies patrolling the area under a United Nations mandate. Their mission is proving ineffective, and the enemy is growing bolder. …

“India showed that the only message with authority in this perversely incentivized void is force. The West may have bigger, more technologically advanced navies than India’s 118-ship naval flotilla, but only India has demonstrated the way to raise the cost of piracy” (Nov. 19, 2008).

The article predicted that from then on, ships flying the Indian flag would most likely pass through the Gulf of Aden without incident!

America used to have that kind of pride in its power, back when leaders were more inclined to act courageously against the forces of terror. When North African pirates, for example, demanded tribute from the U.S. government to ensure safe passage for American ships through the Mediterranean, Thomas Jefferson’s reply was unambiguous: “The style of the demand admitted but one answer. I sent a small squadron of frigates into the Mediterranean.”

And that was when the United States had a tiny fraction of the power that it has today. Like present-day India, there was much less power, but a lot more pride.

Biblical prophecy says this is exactly what would happen. There may still be plenty of power in America today, but the will to use it—as God prophesied in Leviticus 26:19—has been crushed.
