Nationwide shortage leaves gun owners scrambling, paying extra

Reports from across the country confirm that gun owners seeking to stock up on ammunition are facing the same list of problems: shortages, back orders, elevated prices and a long line of people staring at empty shelves where boxes of bullets used to be.
"Just about everywhere I've been, it's sold out," Darren Lauzon told KMGH-TV in Denver after he failed to find ammunition for his new .45 pistol. "Wal-Mart, Sportsman's, wherever."
"Folks have been experiencing shortages all over the country," a spokesman for the National Rifle Association told the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat in California. "Since the election there has been a great increase in firearms sales as well. Background checks are up, enrollment in training and safety classes is up, concealed weapons permits are up, gun sales are up – and ammo manufacturers can't keep up with demand."
Gun shops and retailers agree: the press for ammunition is emptying their shelves quicker than the manufacturers can restock them.
"We're probably selling ammunition right now at a 200 percent increase over normal sales," said Richard Taylor, manager at the Firing Line in Aurora, Colo.
"We've probably got over 4,000 cases of ammunition on back order currently. But we just don't know when we're going to receive that," Taylor told KMGH. "Y2K was just like a little blip on the radar screen compared to this. I mean, it's just phenomenal."
A Wal-Mart salesman told Ross Kaminsky of Human Events, "We used to get shipments almost every day. Now we only know we'll have it when we see it. I get at least a half-dozen calls a day asking for ammunition, especially for handguns, and when it arrives, the customers buy everything."

President Obama greeted the king of Saudi Arabia with a full bow from the waist yesterday, a move one commentator described as a violation of protocol and not worthy of the office he holds.
"I am quite certain that this is not the protocol, and is most unbecoming a president of the United States," writes Clarice Feldman in an American Thinker commentary.
The situation developed as leaders of the world attending the G20 summit in London assembled for a photograph to mark the event.

Independent Norwegian poll: Palestinian majority opposes two states

Amid the ping-pong between Washington and Jerusalem over the validity of a Palestinian state established alongside Israel as the end-product of peace negotiations, the Norwegian Fafo institute which sponsored the 1993 Oslo Framework accords decided to find out how the Palestinians felt about this solution. Its main discovery was that a majority, 53 percent, of Palestinians (like Israelis), is against two states.
This figure breaks down into 33 percent, who opt for the annihilation of the state of Israel, whether by political means or force of arms - to be replaced by a single Islamic republic on all parts of the country; and 20 percent, which favors a united Israeli-Palestinian state, to be eventually engulfed by the latter population.
When Hamas members are polled separately, support for two states drops to 21 percent.
Publication of these findings by the Fafo Institute for Applied International Studies, which is supported by Norwegian foreign ministry and respected by European Middle East policy-makers, indicates that its researchers have given up on the Oslo Accords and the two-state goal pursued by Washington.
However, DEBKAfile's Washington sources expect extreme reluctance on the part of the Obama administration to abandon this goal because it is the only policy objective it has developed and is being used, furthermore, as a key to open the administration's diplomatic door to the Muslim world, especially in the Afghanistan-Pakistan arena (now lumped together as the "Afpak" front).
The US president's advisers are urging him to speed up Israel-Palestinian peacemaking for these ends - even if it means foisting the two-state objective on the Israelis. Proof that the Palestinians too will have to be whipped into line brings the venture close to a mission impossible.

Binyamin Netanyahu launches diplomatic whirl
DEBKAfile's political sources reveal Binyamin Netanyahu's planned launch of his second term as prime minister with a flurry of diplomacy. Thursday, April 2, the day after his government's inception, trips to Cairo and Jordan had already been scheduled for talks with president Hosni Mubarak and King Abdullah II, followed by a visit to Washington to meet President Barack Obama and to Moscow for talks with prime minister Vladimir Putin.
Netanyahu is considering becoming the first Israeli prime minister to visit the Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah.
This goodwill visit, if approved by the security authorities, would denote the new government's recognition of the PA and its willingness to cooperate in strengthening the Palestinian administration politically and economically in accordance with the Middle East road map – though not the Annapolis formula of two states for the two peoples.
According to our sources, Netanyahu held long discussions before deciding on the gestures or "concessions" he would offer his Egyptian and Jordanian hosts.
The Israeli prime minister has become convinced that he and the Egyptian president have many mutually profitable fields of strategic cooperation to discuss. He was apparently won over by defense minister Ehud Barak's proposition, followed during his service with the Olmert government, whereby strategic cooperation with Cairo, pursued discreetly and at the highest levels, must be the linchpin of Israel's Arab relations.
In Amman, DEBKAfile's sources reveal, Netanyahu will promise to prevent West Bank Palestinians swarming across the border into the kingdom. As a special gesture for the king, he will undertake to maintain the freeze on Israeli construction in the sensitive E1 sector connecting Jerusalem to the town of Maale Adummim.
The prime minister's immediate travel plans demonstrate the high priority he assigns to establishing the credibility of his government and leadership in the international community and mending the damage wrought to Israel's image in recent years. He has put this mission ahead even of an urgent overhaul of the economy.
Netanyahu started the ball rolling Wednesday, April 1, when Obama phoned to congratulate him from London after he arrived for the G20 summit. They spoke for half an hour. The White House spokesman said they talked about Iran and the Israel-Arab peace process. The prime minister's spokesman said the conversation was friendly and warm and ended in agreement to meet soon.
According to our Jerusalem and Washington sources, Netanyahu plans to fly to Washington at the end of April. In early May, he will be in Moscow for meetings with the Russian prime minister and possibly President Dmitry Medvedev, which are being arranged by the new foreign minister, the Russian-speaking Avigdor Lieberman.

The nation needs to face the fact that income will be redistributed and health care rationed under a federal budget plan being moved through Congress at the behest of President Obama, according to an official who served under President Clinton.
The plan, according to Lawrence J. Haas, former communications director for Vice President Al Gore, said Obama "wants to make permanent all the tax cuts from those years [2001 and 2003] for people making up to $250,000 a year and frankly to redistribute income a bit in a fair way so he would raise taxes on those above $250,000."
His comments came in an interview with Greg Corombos of RadioAmerica.org, and the audio is embedded here:

Haas, who also was communications director for the White House Office of Management and Budget under the Clinton administration, later worked as director of public affairs for the president at Yale University.
The interview starts out with Haas' condemnation of a GOP proposal for an alternative budget this year, saying it contains "unrealistic spending cuts."
He also said in recent budgets, the income "has been redistributed … in exactly the other direction," condemning tax cuts for anyone in an upper income bracket, a category that includes many business owners.
