Amber Alert!

Get ready for war

by Justin Raimondo

In spite of reassurances from the Washington talking heads and policy wonks that the U.S. is not about to launch an attack on Iran, or countenance an Israeli strike, the Sunday Times has the real scoop:

"President George W. Bush has told the Israeli government that he may be prepared to approve a future military strike on Iranian nuclear facilities if negotiations with Tehran break down, according to a senior Pentagon official.

"Despite the opposition of his own generals and widespread skepticism that America is ready to risk the military, political, and economic consequences of an airborne strike on Iran, the president has given an 'amber light' to an Israeli plan to attack Iran's main nuclear sites with long-range bombing sorties, the official told The Sunday Times.

"'Amber means get on with your preparations, stand by for immediate attack, and tell us when you're ready,' the official said. But the Israelis have also been told that they can expect no help from American forces and will not be able to use U.S. military bases in Iraq for logistical support."

The buzz about Barack’s birth certificate

By Michelle Malkin • June 10, 2008 07:39 AM

Jim Geraghty takes a look at longstanding blog buzz over Barack Obama’s birth certificate, which the campaign refused to release to the St. Petersburg Times in April:

We tried to obtain a copy of Obama’s birth certificate, but his campaign would not release it and the state of Hawaii does not make such records public.

Has anyone seen it? Why shouldn’t the record be in the public domain for presidential candidates?

This was just sent to me, you must read what is on this link.

Smile Rush knows, knows folks in the GOP with spies in the DNC, and is covering his a**.

Rush knows the same thing John McLaughlin knows and hasn't backed off from; McLaughlin predicted as late as 6 weeks ago that Hillary would be the nominee and the next President, and McLaughlin's not backing down or away from that prediction either. McLaughlin was the ONLY pundit who forsaw the 2006 Congressional rout removing GOP against Diebold and all odds.

If Rush turns out wrong here, he looks like a complete a** for going against the entire GOP-owned mainstream media which is on Hillary blackout and has already crowned and coronated Obama not just the nominee, but the next President in a sneaky attempt to trick Democrats into believing Obama can actually win and rally Republicans for McCain. They use faked poll results skewed by polling databases of only Obama supporters, and "registered voters", but then use cell phones only to only poll young people. Many ways to skew the results, and remember; MSM pollsters are PAID by whomever hires them to give CERTAIN RESULTS.

If Rush turns out right with his prediction, he not only looks like a genius, he looks like a prophet. One who was right when EVERYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD SAVE MCLAUGHLIN was wrong.

No, there is real substance to this. Either Limbaugh knows that something is going to come out to obliterate Obama between now and the Democratic convention, or his GOP contacts with spies in the DNC know that the DNC decided to kick Obama to the curb. This is good news because now the DNC half of Hillary supporters will be working to get the truth out about Obama, and Limbaugh must think its inevitable that it's going to come out.

There's no reason for LImbaugh to try to continue "Operation Chaos", which was a nth hour attempt to cover up the fact that the GOP had been doing exactly the same thing for Obama for SEVEN MONTHS, FROM DAY ONE.

You add this prediction to Jesse Jackson saying he's going to cut Obama's n**** off, on the same day, and a real sea change appears to emerge.

Maybe Jesse Jackson was SPEAKING FOR THE DNC.

Subject: Re: Is Obama Legally Eligible to Serve as President

I know that Obama refuses to release his birth certificate, and for some
reason it is not on file in Hawaii, so this is interesting.

Here's a question for you . ..

PLEASE PASS ON............

This came from a USNA alumnus. It'll be interesting to see how the media handles this...

Barack Obama is not a legal U.S. natural-born citizen according to the law
on the books at the time of his birth, which falls between December 24,
1952, to November 13, 1986. Federal Law requires that the office of
President requires a natural-born citizen if the child was not born to two
U.S. Citizen parents. This is what exempts John McCain, though he was born in the US Panama Canal Zone...

US Law very clearly states: '. . . If only one parent is a U.S. Citizen at
the time of one's birth, that parent must have resided in the United States
for minimum ten years, five of which must be after the age of 16.' Barack
Obama's father was not a U.S. Citizen is a fact.

Obama's mother was only 18 when Obama was born. This means even though she
had been a U.S. Citizen for 10 years, (or citizen of Hawaii being a
territory), his mother fails the test for at-least-5-years- prior-to Barack Obama's birth, but after age 16 years old.

In essence, Mother alone is not old enough to qualify her son for automatic
U.S. Citizenship. At most, 2 years elapsed from his mother turning 16 to
the time of Barack Obama's birth when she was 18. His mother would have
needed to have been 16 + 5 = 21 years old at the time of Barack Obama's
birth for him to be a natural-born citizen. Barack Obama was already 3
years old at the time his mother would have needed to be to allow him
natural citizenship from his only U.S. Citizen parent. Obama should have
been naturalized as a citizen . . . but that would disqualify him from holding the office.

The Constitution clearly declares: Naturalized citizens are ineligible to
hold the office of President. Though Barack Obama was sent back to Hawaii
at age 10, any other information does not matter because his mother is the
one who must fulfill the requirement to be a U.S. Citzen for 10 years prior
to his birth on August 4, 1961, with 5 of those years being after age 16.

Further, Obama may have had to have remained in the USA for some time frame
to protect any citizenship he might have had, rather than living in
Indonesia. This is very clear cut and a glaring violation of U.S. Election
law. I think the Governor Schwarzenegger of California should be very
interested in discovering if Obama is allowed to be elected President
without being a natural-born U.S. Citizen, since this would set a precedent.
Stay tuned to your TV sets because I suspect some of this information will
be leaking through over the next several days.

Hezbollah fighters could target Britain

Sunday July 13,2008

IRAN is poised to launch terror attacks in Britain if the West presses ahead with military strikes against its nuclear facilities, intelligence experts warned last night.

As tensions in the Middle East continued to grow, they warned that the Iranian-backed terrorist group Hezbollah had already established sleeper cells in Britain and mainland Europe tasked with carrying out bloody reprisals.

Likely UK targets include nuclear power stations, military bases, Government buildings and high-profile politicians and members of the Jewish community.

Richard Kemp, former adviser on terrorism to Tony Blair, said the difficulty of attacking Western and Israeli military targets directly meant Iran was likely to use its terror network to retaliate. Hezbollah, formed in Lebanon in the 1980s, has grown to become a major force in the Middle East.

He said: “In my view Iran’s only realistic method of retaliation is through Hezbollah.

“Hezbollah undoubtedly have the capability to carry out attacks against Western targets outside the region. They have people here in the UK and they would aim to carry out attacks if they saw us as being in any way supportive of an attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities.”

Claude Moniquet, director of the European Strategic Intelligence and Security Centre, said: “Intelli-gence services across Europe believe Hezbollah pose a serious threat. They have already put in place a network of operatives and there is some evidence that reconnaisance has been carried out on potential targets.

Obama Campaign Calls New Yorker Magazine Cover “Tasteless and Offensive”

Barack Obama had no response to the cover of the July 21st issue of The New Yorker Magazine, seen below, except to shrug incredulously and tell reporters, “I have no response to that.”

The cartoon features Barack and Michelle Obama celebrating with a fist bump in the Oval Office in front of a portrait of Osama bin Laden and an American flag burning in the fireplace. Mrs. Obama is portrayed as a militant radical, while Obama appears foreign. The image reflects, some might say mocks, the rumors that have plagued the couple over the last 18 months.

While the candidate declined comment, his campaign did not. “The New Yorker may think, as one of their staff explained to us, that their cover is a satirical lampoon of the caricature Senator Obama’s right wing critics have tried to create. But most readers will see it as tasteless and offensive. And we agree,” spokesman Bill Burton said in a statement.

The magazine features a lengthy article on “how Chicago shaped Obama.”

What the Founding Fathers Would Say

by J. R. Nyquist

Weekly Column Published: 07.04.2008

The truth is that we face a degeneration of a whole society and not an evil limited to some parts of it. – Ludwig von Mises

In the Declaration of Independence we find the following words: “Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes.” These are not the most quoted or most remembered words from the Declaration; but they are wise words nonetheless. Political life is complicated and the slogans that arise from discontented minds are not, in themselves, solutions. The best institutions in the world may be depicted as the worst, merely because they are imperfect. Citizens should be reminded that revolution is a terrible business. The process of revolution is violence, which is evil.

I receive many emails from readers. A significant percentage of these express violent hatred of the government. Many are those who think they can diagnose a sick republic, when the correct diagnosis is a sick society. The government in our time reflects the condition of the governed. We have become a permissive people. We tolerate what should not be tolerated. We have become consumers instead of citizens. We have become narcissistic and foolish.

The United States is a great country, even now. But the country has followed a path of degeneration via political correctness. To recognize this truth one only has to read Mariam Grossman’s Unprotected: A Campus Psychiatrist Reveals How Political Correctness in Her Profession Endangers Every Student. Grossman is a psychiatrist who works at an American university. “Radical politics pervades my profession,” she explains, “and common sense has vanished.” According to Grossman, “There is a tacit approval of promiscuity and experimentation…. Infection with one of the sexually transmitted viruses is a rite of passage; it comes with the territory. Abortion is the removal of unwanted tissue, sort of like a tonsillectomy.”

The main threat to any great country, quite naturally, comes from within. If we abandon traditional folkways, traditional rules, traditional patriotism, what is left? For those who are paying careful attention, the United States is much weaker than it used to be – economically, morally and politically. Internal weakness carries many dangers; but the most fatal, in the nuclear age, is the opening that internal weakness gives to foreign enemies. Today’s totalitarian powers are akin to scavengers who patiently wait on progressive enervation to do most of their work. They see the advance of American decadence. They see our rising debt. They see that a great financial correction is coming.

Those who think a revolution would put things right, who think a particular politician or institution is to blame, have missed the bigger picture. A revolution has already been underway and the country’s institutions are about to undergo significant changes. The minimal welfare state of the past has gradually extended itself, with the tacit approval of the middle class, into something much less minimal. The culture has shifted to the left, so that ideas once thought to be radical are now “mainstream.” Meanwhile, our conservatives have sought to emphasize economic optimism and consumption while ceding the educational establishment to the “left.” The revolutionary process has been gradual, indeed, but the country as a whole is now ready for the next big step. At present we have a far-left senator running for the presidency, and if the election were held today he’d probably win. The Gallup Daily Poll gives Obama 47 percent to McCain’s 43 percent. The Ramussen Tracking Poll shows Obama “leading in states with 200 Electoral College votes while McCain leads in states with 171 votes.” According to the Time Magazine poll Obama is five points ahead.

What would the Founding Fathers say?

The principles of political economy of today’s Republicans would shock Adams and Jefferson, not to mention the statist policies of the Democrats. There can be no doubt, whatsoever, that ideas and standards have changed. In a book titled Omnipotent Government, written at a time when totalitarian socialism had overrun Europe, Ludwig von Mises asked: “Who is responsible for the deplorable events of the last decades?” According to Mises, “Almost all the fathers of socialism were members of the upper middle class or of the professions.”

That same analysis holds for the United States, as well. “It is not true,” wrote Mises, “that the dangers to the maintenance of peace, democracy, freedom, and capitalism are a result of a ‘revolt of the masses.’ They are an achievement of scholars and intellectuals, of sons of the well-to-do, of writers and artists pampered by the best society.” It seems that the socialist revolution of our time is born out of bourgeois affluence. Therefore, the greatest affluence promises the greatest of all revolutions.

In his Farewell Address, President George Washington warned: “Towards the preservation of your Government and the permanency of your present happy state, it is requisite … that you resist with care the spirit of innovation upon its principles however specious the pretexts.” Those who would overthrow the Constitution may form a party, announcing their good intentions. But beware party spirit, continued Washington: “It serves always to distract the public councils, and enfeeble the public administration. It agitates the community with ill-founded jealousies and false alarms, kindles the animosity of one part against another, foments occasionally riot and insurrection. It opens the door to foreign influence and corruption, which find a facilitated access to the government itself through the channels of party passions. Thus the policy and will of one country, are subjected to the policy and will of another.”

Extremists curse Olmert with Pulsa Denura

Right-wing extremists hold mythical Kabbalistic ‘death curse’ against prime minister, exactly one year after identical ritual against then-Prime Minister Ariel Sharon

Exactly one year after carrying out a “Pulsa Denura,” an ancient Kabbalistic death curse, against former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, Right-wing extremists held a similar ritual targeting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Channel 10 reported Tuesday.

One of the participants related, “The ceremony took place exactly one year after the one for Ariel Sharon. If, God forbid, Olmert continues to hold his position, we will pay a heavy price.”

Surgical strike on Olmert

Slew of investigations faced by prime minister irreversibly damaged his image

Ehud Olmert is a has-been. His career is finished. His fellow politicians know it, the foreign leaders he will be meeting in Paris Sunday know it, and the attorneys and police officers who manage his investigations know it.

The only one who refuses to know it is Ehud Olmert. By doing so, he is only making his suffering worse. The question of which incriminating evidence against him has accumulated, if at all, is still open – but he must realize that the damage to his public stature is irreversible. He must end his term as prime minister.

Iran: McCain cigarette joke, disturbing

Sat, 12 Jul 2008 19:47:44

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Mohammad-Ali Hosseini has criticized Senator John McCain for joking about killing Iranians with cigarettes.

“McCain's crude remark on the indiscriminate killing of the Iranian nation not only testifies to his disturbed state of mind, but also to his warmongering approach to foreign policy,” said Hosseini in a Saturday statement.

“We condemn such jokes and believe them to be inappropriate for a US presidential candidate. It is most evident that jokes about genocide will not be tolerated by Iranians or Americans,” he added.

The straight-talking Arizona senator sparked an outcry when in response to a report that US exports to Iran had increased more than tenfold during George W. Bush's presidency, he suggested killing Iranians by sending them cigarettes.

"Maybe that's a way of killing them,” the senior Republican opined.

Browning Hi Power Accuracy

By Stephen Camp

The term "accuracy" doesn't necessarily mean the same thing to all of us. To a competition match bullseye shooter, it means having the most intrinsically accurate pistol he can have. Malfunctions are a secondary issue in most cases, but he must have a competition pistol capable of putting one bullet hole right on top of another. To the IDPA shooter, the gun must be reliable and capable of dropping hits within a more generous scoring area that the bullseye target. If both of these fellows have pistols capable of meeting their requirements, they have accurate pistols in their respective frames of reference.

So where does the Browning Hi Power fit in with regard to accuracy?

First, you have to remember that the Hi Power was originally designed to be a military service pistol. Emphasis was strong on reliability and accuracy parameters would not be so strict as those for our bullseye shooter previously mentioned. The gun was intended to fire under adverse conditions more than to provide the tightest possible groups. The Hi Power generally will not match the tight groups of pistols designed for competition target shooting including accurized versions of other service pistols such as the Gold Cup or 1911 pistols custom built to provide extreme mechanical accuracy.

Does that mean that it is inaccurate? The answer depends upon your definition and requirements. It's been my experience with many Hi Powers that almost all of them will drop most brands of ammunition into groups under 3" at 25 yards. Some will do better and most will do surprisingly better with a specific load that the gun "likes." I'm happy with loads that do in the 2 to 2.5" range at that distance as I cannot achieve such groups except from a rest and I'm not involved in Camp Perry competition. If the pistol is capable of dropping its shots onto a tennis ball size target at twenty-five yards (assuming I'm doing my part), the Hi Power is accurate, as least to me.

This nearly stock 9mm Mk III has proven satisfactorily accurate with most rounds and surprisingly so with selected ones it "likes." One that comes to mind is Remington 115-grain JHP +P. This particular Hi Power will shoot groups in the 2" range with it at 25 yards from a rest.

One of the endearing traits of the Hi Power is that it is usually consistent in accuracy, one gun to another. I've rarely seen one that wouldn't group in the ranges mentioned and the best-grouping is usually not that much better than the worst-grouping Hi Powers I've owned and/or shot. This speaks highly to FN's manufacturing. (I do wish they'd place such an emphasis on trigger pulls!)

This group was fired with a standard Mk III at twenty-five yards using a rest. I'm sure the flyers are my fault, but I sincerely believe most of us would consider this plenty accurate.

Every now and again, I hear from a shooter having trouble with his Hi Power throwing a wild shot without warning that is not the shooter's fault. Assuming that the ammunition is not at fault, it seems that pistols afflicted with this malady are suffering from the barrel not locking up the same way each time a shot is fired. Finding the specific location of improper fitting, be it in the slide or the barrel can be a tedious problem. If you are suffering from such a problem and happen to have a spare barrel, you might try a switch and see if this does it. The problem here is that such swaps can result in a different POI for the same POA. If this works, great, but if not I'd buy an oversize Bar-Sto match Hi Power barrel and have it fitted to the pistol. On two occasions, this has been the cure and is generally not much more expensive than having a qualified gunsmith weld the original barrel and refit it to the pistol.

At this point, it might be appropriate to compare Hi Power accuracy with a fitted Bar-Sto vs. a stock barrel. It has been my experience that perhaps a 10 to 20% tightening of groups with jacketed bullets will be seen, although the favorite load for the factory barrel might very well be different than that preferred by the match barrel. You will see a significant increase in grouping ability with the Bar-Sto if using either cast or plated bullets. I believe that this is due to the difference in pitch between the two barrels. The factory FN barrel has a 1:10 twist while the Bar-Sto is 1:16. It appears that the cast and plated bullets "like" the slower twist. In general, I've noticed about a 40 to 60 ft/sec decrease in velocity from the 1:10 to the 1:16 with most loads. I assume this is due to more complete combustion of the powder in trying to drive the bullet out the faster twist barrel without reaching the point where too much is used and velocity suffers. This has proven true with many loads I've tested, but not all and it can be different from barrel to barrel. The main thing is that if you're shooting a maximum load that's fine in the slower twist Bar-Sto, it might be too hot in the faster twist factory barrel. This is only a potential problem with loads pushing the maximum ballistic envelope for the cartridge and I'm aware of no factory loads, standard, +P, or +P+ in which it can be risky or dangerous.

This group was fired with an older Hi Power with a fitted Bar-Sto match barrel at 15 yards. I do not note it being much better than with the standard barrel. With cast bullets, accurate loads can be had with the factory barrel, but I've had much better results with the Bar-Sto. I also find that the Bar-Sto barrel does not lead as much, which is likely due to its slower twist.

For most of us, the Browning Hi Power is more accurate than we can actually make use of as it comes from the manufacturer, but it is still essentially a service pistol and should not be expected to group with a target gun. Contrary to some statements I've seen, I've observed no difference overall between Hi Powers having fixed sights vs. those with adjustables with regard to inherent mechanical accuracy. Do not buy an adjustable sighted Hi Power under the false assumption that the pistol is fitted better or held to higher standards in terms of grouping ability. The basic gun is the same with only different sights.

These groups were fired with a factory barrel in a Mk III Hi Power at 15 yards. I submit that this is plenty accurate for a service pistol and would serve plenty good for protection needs, informal target competition, practical pistol competition, or small game hunting.

While I believe that the standard Hi Power is accurate enough to meet the vast majority of shooters' perceived needs, the trigger pull can often inhibit their ability to utilize the gun's accuracy. Unfortunately, poor trigger pulls are not uncommon on the Hi Power pistol. The statement that " a trigger pull need not necessarily be light, but should be crisp" is true, but they do need to be lighter than those common on many Hi Powers. Fortunately, this can be addressed with a number of cures from removing the magazine disconnect to having a gunsmith do a trigger job. The latter will mean more money spent, but for many of us, the result is worth it.

While the Browning Hi Power remains a service pistol with service accuracy, I believe that it falls in the better range of this rating and with but a little help can be a very accurate pistol for all but the very best shots or those in formal competition.

Western United States on Highest Wildfire Alert

July 20, 2007 | From

Thinly stretched fire authorities are discussing bringing in international firefighters if necessary.

The National Interagency Fire Center raised the wildfire alert level for the western U.S. to its highest setting on Wednesday. The alert could necessitate the deployment of the National Guard, as well as importing wildfire crews from other countries.

“The resources we have are being stretched thin,” Randy Eardley, a spokesman for the center, told the Associated Press.

Eardley cited a number of reasons for maxing out the emergency preparedness alert, including the number of large fires burning at present as well as the geographic range of the blazes. Dry lightning has caused dozens of new fires in Oregon, Idaho, Nevada and Utah. There are approximately 70 fires in 12 states that are over 100 acres in size.

Between Monday and Thursday, over 1,000 new fires were reported in the West. Nevada crews are battling more than 24 fires, one of which threatened Reno. Oregon’s largest fire had grown to 200 square miles. Utah firefighters are battling two new large fires on top of three existing blazes covering 640 square miles, and California fires are threatening homes in both southern and northern parts of the state.

“We didn’t get enough rain to stop the fire,” U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Jodi Marron said of the northern blaze, “but we got enough to slow it from spreading.”

The center expects conditions for wildfires to worsen in the coming week as dry, 100-degree conditions mix with thunderstorms and wind.

Western Americans can expect fires and other unnatural disasters to persist and even worsen in coming years. To find out more about this subject and why the nation is experiencing weather catastrophes, read “California Disasters Continue—Why?” by Trumpet editor in chief Gerald Flurry.

Israeli jets using Iraq's airspace

The US has allowed Israeli jets to use US airbases and fly over Iraqi air space for a likely attack against Iran, Iraqi media say. It is more than a month that some Israeli planes belonging to Israeli air force use the US military bases in Iraq to land and take off, Iraqi Nahrainnet news network said Wednesday, quoting informed sources close to Iraq's Defense Ministry.

WASHINGTON – A top scientist today warned the House Armed Services Committee America remains vulnerable to a "catastrophe" from a nuclear electromagnetic pulse attack that could be launched with plausible deniability by hostile rogue nations or terrorists.

William R. Graham, chairman of the Commission to Assess the Threat to the United States from Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) Attack and the former national science adviser to President Reagan, testified before the committee while presenting a sobering new report on "one of a small number of threats that can hold our society at risk of catastrophic consequences."

It is the first report from the commission since 2004 and identifies vulnerabilities in the nation's critical infrastructures, "which are essential to both our civilian and military capabilities."

Not taking the steps necessary to reduce the threat in the next three to five years "can both invite and reward attack," Graham told the committee.

The scariest and most threatening kind of EMP attack is initiated by the detonation of a nuclear weapon at high altitude in the range of 25 to 250 miles above the Earth's surface. The immediate effects of EMP are disruption of, and damage to, electronic systems and electrical infrastructure. Such a detonation over the middle of the continental U.S. "has the capability to produce significant damage to critical infrastructures that support the fabric of U.S. society and the ability of the United States and Western nations to project influence and military power," said Graham.

The retro-reflective aimer has physical limitations and will not work effectively at high angles away from the sun. In such cases, the two-handed aiming method is required.

Hold the mirror at your eye and look through the aimer or over the top of the mirror; outstretch you other arm and form a V with two fingers. Sight through the aiming hole or over the top of the mirror with the mirror reflection visible on the V. Carefully turn and tilt the mirror to move the V and the reflection to the target. Lower the V so that the reflection touches only the tip of the fingers for maximum signaling performance.

This signaling method will work with any reflective surface (make-up mirror, CD-ROM, shinney piece of metal, hologram on credit card, etc) to create an improvised signal mirror. If there are multiple members of you party, have them use improvised mirrors if they do not have their own signal mirror.

U.S. Willing to Deploy Combat Troops to Colombia

by Garry Leech

While the U.S. mainstream media widely-reported the U.S. Department of Justice’s recent indictment of 50 rebel leaders belonging to the leftist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), an announcement by the State Department the next day received surprisingly little coverage. On March 24, Assistant Secretary of State Anne Patterson told Colombia’s Radio Caracol that, while the United States would not initiate any unilateral military action to capture FARC leaders, it would intervene if invited by the Colombian government. Given that the U.S. government’s intervention in Colombia already involves everything but the deployment of U.S. combat troops, it is clear that Patterson’s comments were intended to illustrate the Bush administration’s willingness to deploy U.S. troops to Colombia to combat FARC guerrillas.

The indictment of the FARC leaders further illustrates the Bush administration’s strategy to portray the FARC as the greatest perpetrator of violence and drug trafficking in Colombia. The reality, however, is very different from the Bush White House’s fictitious portrayal. The U.S. indictment provided no evidence to support its claim that FARC leaders have earned $25 billion from drug trafficking and are responsible for 60 percent of the cocaine shipped to the United States.

Meanwhile, most Colombia experts agree that the country’s right-wing paramilitaries are far more deeply involved in drug trafficking than the rebels, a fact supported by the numerous drug busts in which the seized cocaine was traced back to paramilitary groups. In fact, former associates of Pablo Escobar, the notorious leader of the now-defunct Medellín cartel, established some of Colombia’s most prominent paramilitary groups.

At the same time that the Bush administration is making the FARC the focus of its drug war propaganda, it is becoming increasingly evident that the U.S.-backed paramilitary demobilization is nothing more than a charade. Last week, demobilized paramilitary leader Ivan Roberto Duque confirmed publicly on Caracol Radio what Amnesty International, the United Nations and many analysts had been alleging for more than a year: that demobilized paramilitaries are taking up arms again. According to Duque, ex-militia fighters are offering their services to drug traffickers or “private justice” groups, also known as paramilitaries. As a result, the number of killings by paramilitaries in 2005 more than doubled that of the previous year.

After more than five years and $4 billion in funding, Plan Colombia has failed to significantly reduce the price, purity and availability of cocaine in U.S. cities. Meanwhile, Colombian President Alvaro Uribe’s three-year U.S.-backed military offensive has failed to seriously diminish the FARC’s military capacity. Given that Washington has already made Colombia the third-largest recipient of U.S. military aid in the world—providing intelligence, weapons and training—the only remaining escalation available to the Bush administration is to deploy U.S. combat troops to the South American nation under the guise of the war on drugs.

Such a U.S. military intervention is not likely to involve a massive deployment of troops to Colombia, a strategy that is not possible at the moment given the Pentagon’s commitment in Iraq. Instead, it would most likely involve the deployment of U.S. Army Special Forces units to track down FARC leaders in Colombia’s remote jungle regions. In other words, the U.S. military would replicate the strategy it is currently utilizing to find al-Qaeda leaders in the remote and mountainous Afghanistan-Pakistan border region.

Ironically, Plan Colombia has actually shown that its principal target—the FARC—is not heavily dependent on the drug trade. According to analysts James Brittain and James Sacouman, Plan Colombia has caused a dramatic decrease in coca cultivation in the FARC-dominated southern regions, displacing it to other parts of the country. At the same time, Uribe’s security policies have resulted in a massive decline in kidnappings over the past three years. If the FARC were heavily dependent on these two sources of income to fund its insurgency, then the rebel group’s military capacity should have been seriously diminished over the past five years. But as Brittain and Sacouman have noted, FARC attacks against the Colombian military, the country’s infrastructure and the operations of foreign corporations have dramatically increased over the past two years.

A direct U.S. military intervention in Colombia clearly would have little to do with combating drugs. After all, if that were the true objective then the Bush administration would be targeting the country’s paramilitary leaders who, under the demobilization agreement, have been allowed to maintain their drug trafficking organizations while avoiding extradition to the United States—instead serving as little as 22 months of jail time on luxurious ranches in Colombia.

The real objectives of a U.S. military escalation are rooted in ideology and economics. The Bush administration is intent on eliminating a leftist insurgency that is proving to be a persistent threat to U.S. economic interests and to Washington’s closest ally in the region. Colombia has become an increasingly important source of oil and coal, most of which is situated in rural regions where the operations of multinational companies remain vulnerable to rebel attacks. Furthermore, it is no coincidence that the Bush administration has announced its desire to escalate U.S. military intervention in Colombia less than a month after the two countries signed a bi-lateral free trade agreement. The economic policies have been established, but many of them need to be militarily implemented in Colombia due to the FARC’s persistence.

There is unlikely to be any deployment of U.S. combat troops to Colombia prior to May’s presidential election. Anti-U.S. sentiment is already running high among Colombians following the signing of the unpopular free trade agreement in February. Consequently, any deployment of U.S. troops to wage war in Colombia prior to May would likely hurt Uribe’s chances of re-election. If it does indeed occur, the deployment of U.S. combat troops to Colombia will likely begin shortly after Uribe is sworn in for his second-term. Such a U.S. military escalation would help the Colombian president intensify the so-called democratic security strategy he initiated almost four years ago.
