Jose Compean with his wife, Patty, talking to reporters prior to his prison sentence

Convicted former Border Patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean were released from federal prison this morning and are en route to join their families in El Paso, Texas.

Characterizing Ramos and Compean's incarceration as a "political prosecution," Rep. Ted Poe, R-Texas, called for a congressional investigation into alleged prosecutorial misconduct by El Paso U.S. Attorney Johnny Sutton under the direction of Bush administration Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

Poe also called for an investigation into the alleged role of the Mexican government in demanding that Ramos and Compean be prosecuted.

"As soon as President Bush commuted Ramos and Compean's sentences, the Mexican government registered a large protest," Poe noted.

"In their protest, the Mexican government admitted their involvement in the case without specifying what their involvement was," he added.

"So I think the first order of business is for the U.S. Congress to investigate what role the Mexican government had in demanding the Bush administration prosecute this case," he insisted. "Mexico should not be meddling into U.S. criminal cases."

Israel launches covert war against Iran

Israel has launched a covert war against Iran as an alternative to direct military strikes against Tehran's nuclear programme, US intelligence sources have revealed.

Israel Votes for Security

February 13, 2009 | From theTrumpet.com

But is it possible for the new government to secure a durable and lasting peace?

After losing 26 of its then-38-seat bloc in 2006, Likud climbed out of political oblivion on Tuesday to grab hold of 27 seats in the new government—one shy of Kadima’s 28. With right-leaning parties winning a 65-55 majority over the left in the election, Likud Chairman Benjamin Netanyahu stands the best chance of replacing Ehud Olmert as Israel’s next prime minister.

Pakistan inks truce deal with militants in NW area

  • y RIAZ KHAN, Associated Press Writer Riaz Khan, Associated Press Writer Mon Feb 16, 5:19 pm ET
AP – Representatives of Islamic militants arrive to attend a peace meeting with Pakistani government officials …

PESHAWAR, Pakistan – Pakistan agreed Monday to suspend military offensives and impose Islamic law in part of the restive northwest, making a gesture it hopes will help calm the Taliban insurgency while rejecting Washington's call for tougher measures against militants.

A U.S. defense official called the deal "a negative development," and some Pakistani experts expressed skepticism the truce would decrease violence. One human rights activist said the accord was "a great surrender" to militants.

Obama promises Palestinians he'll protect 'biblical heartland'
President pledges to protest Jewish housing developments

JERUSALEM – The Obama administration has pledged to the Palestinian Authority it will closely monitor Jewish construction in the West Bank and will protest any new housing developments in the biblical territory, a top PA negotiator told WND.

"They told us the White House will watch for any Jewish construction," said the PA negotiator, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"Obama knows that if [Likud Chairman Benjamin] Netanyahu is the next prime minister, he will try to expand the settlements. They pledged to us this will be strongly protested," the negotiator said.

Although Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni's Kadima party captured one more seat that Likud in last week's elections, Netanyahu is considered most likely to form the next government, since he is reportedly able to forge the most stable coalition with other parties in the 120-seat Knesset.

Olmert takes reins of Gaza truce process out of Barak's hands

DEBKAfile Special Report

February 17, 2009, 2:59 PM (GMT+02:00)

Tzipi Livni falls into Ehud Olmert's trap

Tzipi Livni falls into Ehud Olmert's trap

Prime minister Ehud Olmert has summoned a special security cabinet session for Wednesday, Feb. 18, to reassess the indirect extended truce talks with Hamas brokered by Egypt in the wake of Israel's three-week military campaign in the Gaza Strip last month. The cabinet will be asked to reshuffle Israel's positions by placing the release of its soldier Gilead Shalit, kidnapped in 2006, ahead of all other ceasefire issues.

This is a sharp reversal of the tactics employed by defense minister Ehud Barak and his truce envoy Amos Gilead. In effect, Olmert has cut him out of the picture. The prime minister capped Barak's demotion by phoning Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak Monday, Feb. 16, to inform him where matters stood. He made it clear that the defense minister had erred in leaving Shalit out of the Cairo talks and acted on his own without the prime minister's authority.

A cabinet member, Raffi Eytan, remarked Tuesday that the negotiations will go back to square one in view of the daily trickle of Palestinian missiles, rockets and mortar fire from Gaza since Israel ended its campaign plus Hamas' ultimatum demanding that all Gaza crossings be reopened forthwith.

Since Saturday, the prime minister has reiterated on every occasion that until Shalit is restored to his family, the crossings issue is not open for discussion. He has ignored Hamas' protestations that the two issues are unrelated.

Olmert has also insisted on respecting "the new political reality" generated by the Feb. 10 general election. He has therefore co-opted Likud leader Binyamin Netanyahu to key discussions on Gaza - signaling that he is betting on Netanyahu as next prime minister. This was also a painful side-swipe to Barak for the poor electoral showing of his Labor party, the majority of which prefers the opposition benches to a place in government.

Most of all, he made it clear both at home and in Cairo that he is still prime minister and the man in charge. The defense minister is now paying for forgetting who's the boss in the flush of Operation Cast Lead's success in the Gaza Strip.

DEBKAfile's political sources expect Ehud Olmert to be around for a while considering the difficulties his successor as Kadima leader, foreign minister Tzipi Livni, and Netanyahu face in putting together a viable coalition government. The formal process begins Wednesday when President Shimon Peres receives party representatives to hear their recommendations for the candidate best able to form a government.

Just before the full cabinet session Sunday, Olmert told Livni he intended calling for a national unity government (Likud, Kadima and Labor) to succeed his administration. Clearly upset, she asked him to back off and when he pointed to an open microphone, she wrote him a note in the same vein, which TV cameras were allowed to pick up.

Monday, Livni instructed Haim Ramon to inform Lieberman of Israel Beitenu that Kadima was ready to accept almost all his terms, including a platform certain to be vetoed by the religious parties, for joining her government. Her second prospective partner, Labor, came down on Kadima like a ton of bricks, accusing its leaders of cheating the voter who believed he was electing a left-of-center party only to find it in bed with the far right. This strengthened the Laborites intent on going into opposition. Without Labor and the religious parties, Kadima (28 + Israel Beitenu's 15) is 17 mandates short of a majority government.

Likud spokesmen then made it clear that if Lieberman fails to recommend Netanyahu to the president, he need not expect high posts in his administration.

The Israeli Beitenu leader has not enhanced his eligibility for high office in Jerusalem by a business trip straight after the election to the Belarus capital of Minsk, whose government is notorious for selling arms to Iran, Libya, Syria, Venezuela and Islamist terrorist organizations.

Olmert's close aides report that the caretaker prime minister is playing cat and mouse with his former and potential rivals because he expects to come out of the corruption scandals hanging over him with a clean enough slate for a comeback in a couple of years.

COMMENTARY FROM HARRY GORMAN

My friend HARRY is 93 years old

Fellow Americans,
How I hoped Barack Obama would be the "change-maker" our country desperately needs!
But, as a long-retired small businessman with bitter memories of the 1930s Depression -- and long decades of life-experience in good times and bad, I can tell you, without hesitation, that our well-intentioned, youngish President, so eloquent in his promises to get America back on track -- IS OFF TO A BAD START.

Somebody, who knows little about geo-economics and less about how a BUSINESS is created and "grows" -- is giving him terrible advice.

A GOVERNMENT MUST BE RUN LIKE A BUSINESS OR IT WILL FAIL. THE WORST THING YOU CAN DO TO A FAILING BUSINESS (OUR GOVERNMENT) IS TO THROW HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS OF "DOLLARS"-CREATED-OUT- OF-THIN-AIR OR BORROWED -- AND EXPECT TO REVERSE THE CANCER-RIDDEN ECONOMY PRESIDENT OBAMA INHERITED FROM CORRUPT, DESPICABLE, INCOMPETENT PREDECESSORS IN CONGRESS -- REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRATS -- BOTH GUILTY IN THE EYES OF MAN AND GOD -- OF DESTROYING OUR ECONOMY BY ENABLING CORPORATE "PROFIT-VULTURES" TO MOVE FACTORIES TO CHINA AND OTHER FOREIGN COUNTRIES WITH WHOSE SLAVE WAGES AMERICANS CANNOT COMPETE.

President Obama. . . Please pay attention to this weary old man who will tell you TRUTH instead of fairy tales.
Putting millions of Americans to work on infrastructure repair, creating all kinds of social programs, no matter how desirable -- and paying them with "funny" (counterfeit) money is an EXPENSE -- A COST, not an INCOME to bring REAL PROFIT-money into our empty Treasury.

Only EXPORTS from thousands of our vanished factories
did that, before Nixon opened "trade relations" with Communist China in 1971 and Bill Clinton made the
infamous "most favored nation" trade treaty PERMANENT in 2000. (He also signed into law N.A.F.T.A -- another loss-loss for America. . . Oh, I LOVE our slimy, "honest", know-nothing and care less --- politicians!)

Did ANYBODY tell you the deadly "secret" that we and your children are sitting on a close to $11 TRILLION Federal debt?

If you had this debt hanging over your home or business would you DARE to print up "funny dollars" on your
computer printer and merrily begin to "spend" on non-profit, make-work programs you can't afford?
NO!. .. . You would be quickly arrested for COUNTERFEITING. Yet, when Obama and our Treasury do exactly the same on a Treasury printing press -- it becomes "legal tender".

NOBODY is talking about the blood-sucking Global Economy into which Americans have been tricked by CONGRESS.

Tricked? Oh, yes!. . Just ONE figure out of the Foreign Trade link of the Census Bureau shows that our 2008 LOSS, "trading" with Communist China is over $266
BILLION with hundreds of billions LOST to America since we started trade relations with this tyranny under "most favored nation" treaty in the World Trade Organization THIS IS STUPIDITY ON A GIGANTIC CONGRESSIONAL MORON LEVEL -- a DISASTER FOR ANY BUSINESS, including our Government.

Russia close to selling S-300 anti-air missiles to Iran for its nuclear sites

DEBKAfile Exclusive Report

February 15, 2009, 9:56 PM (GMT+02:00)

Iran's defense minister Mostafa Najar due in Moscow

Iran's defense minister Mostafa Najar due in Moscow

DEBKAfile's military sources report that Iran's defense minister Mostafa Najar travels to Moscow Monday, Feb. 16 to tie up the last ends of Tehran's purchase of a brigade of advanced Russian S-300 air defense missiles to guard its nuclear sites.

Our Iranian sources report that Najar will be the guest of the Russian defense ministry and the giant missile manufacturers Almaz Antey and visit the new missile's production and testing sites.

Its components are produced in dozens of factories across Russian – the missile itself at one group, the radar systems in another and the missile batteries at a third.

DEBKAfile's Washington and Jerusalem sources recall that prime minister Vladimir Putin in his previous role as Russian president personally assured the US and Israeli governments more than once that he would never release the lethal S-300 missiles to Iran. Their acquisition would make an air attack on Iran's nuclear facilities extremely difficult and dangerous.

Washington sources believe that the Kremlin is about to comply with Iran's request in order to turn the heat on the Obama administration for a final decision to waive plans to install an American missile shield in East Europe.

Saudi intelligence chief in Damascus for all-out bid to rescue Gaza truce

DEBKAfile Exclusive Report

February 15, 2009, 9:46 PM (GMT+02:00)

Saudi intelligence chief Prince Muqrin bin Abdulaziz Al Saud

Saudi intelligence chief Prince Muqrin bin Abdulaziz Al Saud

The Saudi and Egyptian intelligence chiefs launched a dramatic bid Sunday night, Feb. 15, to maneuver Hamas into accepting Egyptian-Israel terms for an extended ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, DEBKAfile's Middle East sources disclose. In an unannounced visit to Damascus, Prince Muqrin bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the head of Saudi intelligence service, told Syrian president Bashar Assad that Riyadh and Cairo would shelve their quarrel with him if he coerced Hamas into accepting a truce.

Egyptian intelligence Gen. Omar Suleiman, who led the negotiations with Hamas, flew to Riyadh Sunday night to call on King Abdullah.

The two spymasters set out after preparing the ground with their Syrian colleague Gen. Muhammad Nasif, Assad's special intelligence adviser. President Hosni Mubarak decided to have Gen. Suleiman waiting in the Saudi capital to see what comes out of the Damascus talks and be on hand to keep the king advised of Cairo's position on the next developments, including a possible conversation between Abdullah and Assad.

As a further incentive for Assad to rescue the Cairo truce initiative, the Egyptian and Saudi governments offered him their backing in the dialogue he will soon be holding with the Obama administration.

Where does your state rank in religious belief? Gallup poll reveals 'Bible Belt' for real

A recent poll of more than 350,000 Americans on the importance of religion revealed that the nation is separated into enclaves of widely divergent viewpoints on faith, with some states and regions clearly religious and others significantly secular.

Gallup conducted a telephone poll of 355,334 U.S. adults, asking the question, "Is religion an important part of your daily life?"

As one might suspect, states from the "Bible Belt" scored the highest, with 85 percent of Mississippians and 79 percent of Tennesseeans, for example, answering yes.

The poll also revealed, however, that in addition to the Bible Belt, the U.S. also has a pair of "secular strips."

The New England

states of Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Maine scored the lowest in the nation, with only 42 percent of Vermont residents – or less than half the percentage of those in Mississippi – answering yes.

The other "secular strip" can be found in the West, where Alaska, Washington, Oregon and Nevada all scored in the bottom 10 states for affirming religion's importance in daily life.

Get Ray Comfort's latest book, "You Can Lead an Atheist to Evidence but You Can't Make Him Think" – signed by the author – exclusively from WND Books!

Across the country's entirety, 65 percent of the respondents affirmed that religion is an important part of their lives.

Gallup's map of the nation, based on a state-by-state breakdown of responses to the poll question, can be seen below:

The British Nazi Empire?

February 16, 2009 | From theTrumpet.com

The hidden danger in demonizing the British Empire. By Richard Palmer

“The British Empire oversaw countless atrocities, assumed an immense sense of cultural superiority which has sustained to this day, and destabilized dozens of developing governments.” Is this really true?

When Emmanuel College, Cambridge, announced that its May Ball would have a British Empire theme, it was accused of advocating slavery and racism. A Facebook webpage, sponsored by a number of businesses, demands that the theme be changed, comparing the British Empire to Nazi Germany. Many of the British hate their former empire.

Several years ago, then Foreign Secretary Jack Straw blamed many of the world’s problems on Britain’s “colonial past.” The British view is largely that the empire was a shameful thing.

Meanwhile, Britain’s society is falling apart at the seams.

Many of Britain’s social problems actually arise from this absurd notion of history. Today, Britain has no sense of identity—rather, it is ashamed of its identity. And so society is being torn apart.
