Israeli soldier Gilead Shalit looks "healthy and coherent" on Hamas tape

The video-tape of Sgt. Gilead Shalit handed Israel in a trade for 20 Palestinian female prisoners Friday Oct. 2 was flown to his close family, who viewed his image for the first time since he was kidnapped in June, 2006, 1,200 days ago, aged 19. Running two minutes, it includes the soldier's reading of a Hamas daily newspaper in Arabic dated Sept. 14 as proof that the tape is recent.
It has been left to the Shalit family to decide if and when to release the tape for public airing. Hamas has promised not to broadcast the video first.
The single Palestinian woman returning to the Gaza Strip (the others headed back to their West Bank homes) was welcomed by a large rally and Hamas leaders. Prime minister Ismail Haniyeh said her release vindicates his movement's practice of kidnapping Israelis as hostages to break "fighters" out of Israeli jails.
Hamas demands up to 1,000 Palestinian prisoners for the Israeli soldier's release. Negotiations sponsored by Egypt have picked up speed and moved forward to this interim stage since a German mediator took over and the Netanyahu government appointed a new Israeli negotiator two months ago. Tough bargaining remains over the 40-50 hard-core terrorist facilitators sentenced to life whose release Hamas is demanding. Israel wants to have them exiled.

Israel receives at least one new German Dolphin-class submarine

A German-made Dolphine-class submarine
DEBKAfile's military sources report that at least one of two Dolphin-class U212 submarines on order for the Israeli Navy from the German HDW shipyards in Kiel was delivered this week, bringing the Navy's total number of this type of sub to four. According to foreign military sources, the Dolphin is capable of carrying cruise missiles with nuclear warheads.
Israel has never officially confirmed possession of this type of nuclear-capable submarine. According to our military sources, Chancellor Angela Merkel was persuaded by the military tensions put forth by Iran to step in personally and raise the completion of Israel's submarine order fitted out for cruise missiles to top priority. The work was finished a year before the date on the contract.
The delivery of at least one of the pair of Dolphins just before the Six Powers confront Iran on its nuclear program Thursday, Oct. 1, gives substance to Israel's option to strike Iranian nuclear facilities.
In June, an Israeli Dolphin passed through the Suez Canal for the first time, escorted by Egyptian navy vessels, as a message to Tehran that Cairo would open the waterway to Israeli warships in the event of the controversy over Iran's nuclear program getting out of hand.
DEBKAfile only confirms the arrival of one Dolphin.
The French and Italian news agencies, AFP and ANSA, reported Tuesday that Israel had taken delivery of not one but two German-made U212 submarines and now had a fleet of five. AFP quoted a military spokesman in Tel Aviv. An ANSA correspondent reported that military sources in Tel Aviv and Berlin had declined to comment on the report except for promising to check it. According to the Italian reporter, it is also possible that the subs were handed to an Israeli Navy crew by the shipyard and had not yet reached Israel.

Forest Service forbids 'religious themes' on 5,000 decorations recognizing holiday

The U.S. Forest Service has banned the name of Jesus from decorations being assembled by children in Arizona for a blue spruce from the state that will become the Capitol Christmas Tree this year, and a legal firm is challenging the censorship.
"Banning Christmas from the Capitol Christmas tree is just absurd. Christian students shouldn't be discriminated against for expressing their religious beliefs," said Jonathan Scruggs, litigation staff counsel for the Alliance Defense Fund.
"The First Amendment does not allow government officials to exclude schoolchildren's ornaments for the capitol's Christmas tree merely because they communicate a religious viewpoint," he said yesterday.
The organization has sent a letter to state and federal officials, including Arizona Gov. Janie Brewer, who are supervising the program, calling on them to stop enforcement of the prohibition.
