Bolton: Military action to stop Iran acquiring an atomic bomb is left to Israel

January 22, 2008, 11:12 PM (GMT+02:00)

At a lecture in Herzliya, Israel, Jan. 22, the former US ambassador to the UN John Bolton said: “One can say with some assurance that in the next year the use of force by the United States is highly unlikely” – especially since a US intelligence report claimed Iran had suspended a nuclear program in 2003.

Bolton went on to estimate that further UN sanctions against the Islamic Republic would be ineffective in stopping Iran’s military program. “Another resolution will be even more toothless than the previous two sanction resolutions,” he said.

“This increases the pressure on Israel in that period of time… If it feels Iran is on the verge of acquiring that capability, it brings the decision point home to use force,” said the US speaker.

“If you are worried about an Iran with nuclear weapons and an extreme theological regime in power, the time to take the plan of action is before Iran acquires the weapons,” he said, explaining: “The calculus in the region changes dramatically once Iran has nuclear capability, meaning the preemptive use of force or the overthrow of the Iranian regime has to come before they get the weapon.”

Once Tehran has the weapon, said Bolton, there is a risk of retaliation with nuclear capability “and that’s why Israel is in danger – it is a very small country and two or three nuclear weapons (and) there is no more country. The window of time available is narrow.”

Bolton was of the view that Iran’s response “will be a lot more measured than people think.”

A senior Israeli security official commented on the American ex-official’s words: "One should listen very closely to what Bolton has to say."

Springfield Armory Mil-Spec "Progress Report"

By Stephen Camp

www.hipowersandhandguns.com

Since I wrote "A Critical Look at the Springfield Armory Mil-Spec" in January 2005, many more rounds have flown downrange and I thought that it might be of interest on how the pistol has held up and any problems. (That article is in this section of the site for those interested.)

The pistol worked fine as it came from the factory, but had a less-than-stellar trigger pull and the hammer spur nipped me regularly. I bobbed the hammer and eliminated that and also used a Pachmayr drop-in grip safety to eliminate the wear and tear caused by the sharp edges of the factory grip safety. Not happy with that set up, I eventually rounded the edges of the factory GI-type grip safety and this pretty well solved the problem.

I find that with the rounded GI grip safety and a slightly shortened spur hammer, I can comfortably shoot the pistol about 200 full-power loads without problems. I much prefer the wide grip safety, but wanted at least one 1911-pattern pistol that somewhat resembled the unmodified 1911 stalwart. (Some seem to think that because they have no problems with the GI type grip safety, no one else should either. Frequently, comments like, "If beavertails were needed, John Browning would have put them on the gun," and other such information-filled eloquent pearls of …crap. Different folks find that different things work for them and if you are one better served with the wide grip safety, go for it. If the standard type works fine for you, great, but I submit that it is up to the individual user to make the decision.)

Not readily visible from the outside, this Mil-Spec's internal parts have been replaced with upgraded ones done by trigger specialist, Teddy Jacobson. This "hidden" work has resulted in a very good 1911 pattern pistol and one that I would absolutely trust in a serious situation.

Even though the pistol was working fine and in stock condition, I did upgrade the internal parts with those supplied by trigger specialist, Teddy Jacobson of Actions by T. The trigger was initially just shy of about 5-lbs, with the break being both crisp and clean. It settled in at about 4 1/2-lbs and has stayed there. The gun was equipped with a steel firing pin as well, but the slide stop and single-side thumb safety have been left alone. The wide EMC spur hammer he provided is finely checkered and has been bobbed and recontoured to eliminate hammer bite.

I kept the factory short trigger, but smoothed it up. I also replaced the mainspring housing for another arched one that I already had. It has no lock and standard size parts work in it. Though not at all necessary, I replaced the checkered plastic stocks that came with the pistol for a set I simply think looks better while still offering a secure grip.

This Mil-Spec .45 auto has proven itself utterly reliable with a wide selection of bullet types and is one I trust for "serious matters."

I have not kept an exact round count, but it is in excess of 4K as this is written. Most of these have been either 200-gr. CSWC handloads at about 870 ft/sec or 230-gr. CFP and CRN at roughly 840 ft/sec. It has also gobbled up several hundred 230-gr. Federal HydraShoks, Golden Sabers, Gold Dots, Ranger JHP's, and ball rounds.

With any full-power load, it has had zero malfunctions, not one. There have been no failures to extract or eject and the slide stop consistently locks back when the last shot's fired and not before.

The sights on this gun are as they came from the factory. They were properly regulated and I've seen no reason to change them.

Slide-to-frame fit both vertical and horizontal has very, very little "slop." The barrel-to-slide fit has remained solid as a rock, with wear marks evenly distributed on the rear edge of the barrel hood. I have no intentions of changing either the factory barrel or bushing as the gun groups very nicely as is.

The pistol's parkerized finish is holding up nicely, though a ding or two is now present.

Wear marks are not excessive and evenly distributed on both sets of slide rails.

It is my understanding that the Mil-Spec is not so easy to find as in the recent past. I do not know if that is because gun dealers sell them as fast as they get them or if SA is focusing on other models, or what, but if you want a relatively inexpensive no frills 1911-pattern .45, I would give these a long and hard look.

I own several 1911 pistols, most being more costly than the Mil-Spec, but I trust none of them more than I do this one.

This Mil-Spec has proven itself to me. It groups adequately and has demonstrated extreme reliability while being essentially a "basic" type 1911 pattern pistol. The 9mm/38 Super firing pin used has presented no problems with either breakage or firing. The gun runs on everything I've tried with the exception of a very light target SWC that was loaded too lightly for the gun's standard power ISMI 16-lb recoil spring. All standard pressure and +P loads have worked flawlessly.

Four thousand full power loads are certainly not that many compared to what more than a few serious shooters crank off in a year's time. I think that they've been enough to prove to me (at least) that the old saw that a 1911 has to cost thousands to be reliable is pretty much false…but many already know that.

Do I believe that all Mil-Specs will run flawlessly out of the box? Nope, but the last 5 or 6 I have seen sure have. With the immense continuing popularity of John Browning's enduring design, factories crank them out as fast as they can and some that shouldn't have got past quality control simply do. It is not right, but such seems to be the case. That said, I believe that the Mil-Spec is a very, very fine choice for folks wanting a quality 1911 without breaking the bank.

A gun does not have to be ultra-expensive to be special. I would not hesitate to use this one in a fight if required. When I carry a 1911 for self-protection, it is almost always this one.

Ported Handguns

When a person carries a handgun for their job as an LEO or as a civillian having a concealed handgun license or even a person that wants to protect their home. Reasonable decisions must be made and sadly most people believe the BS they read in publications and especially the advertisements and some of the nonsense that is posted on some of the lower class forums (my opinion only). Some magazines are wonderful "ENTERTAINTMENT" , never lose that perspective and they sometimes give good sound advice. Remember the people that write are being paid to go along with that publications agenda and that is down the green back road that leads to where Willie Sutton (famous bank robber) used to hang out.

When it comes to picking a handgun for protection of life and property, you or I never know when and or where what conditions we may have to use it. First of all you deserve the treat and experience of firing a small powerful handgun at night so that you can see for yourself what it looks like and how your eyes react.
IN MY OPINION selecting a handgun with ports or holes in the barrel is TOTAL INSANITY. I do not care who say its ok and a good idea, try it for your self, go to an indoor range and make sure there is a light fixture above your cubicle where you fire that ported handgun. If you have the holes on top of your barrel, check the light fixture after you fire your new "GEM".

Lets assume you have a revolver with a barrel length of 2.25 inches, and it either has ported slots on the side of the barrel or 5 or 6 holes drilled into the top of the barrel. You "MUST" shoot this revolver at nite to really appreciate the FLAME THROWER you now own. I am going to write a story for you to read very carefully and I want you to pay very close attention to what I write as it is very important.
The following scenario can very easily happen;

You are driving your car, your wife, or friend, or one of your family members is in the passenger seat. You are RIGHT HANDED. All of a sudden you are being car jacked and they are trying to get in through the passenger side of your car, either thru the glass or the door. You elect to shoot (split second decision) through the passenger window in order to stop the attacker. You have one of those well recommended small but powerful revolvers that has holes in the top of the barrel or ports in the side of the barrel, you loaded your revolver with +P or +P+ 357 caliber cartridges and each chamber is ready to go with this super hot load.

When you point the gun using your right hand, you will need to angle your wrist to get a straight shot through the passenger window, in this moment of panic, your now angled revolver, depends on how far back your seat is in relationship to the passenger window but in any event this tilts the ports or holes in your 2.25 inch barrel toward your passenger. YOU FIRE, and kill your attacker through the glass. The flames coming out of the ports or the holes in your short barrel will take your passengers face off and you will blind them forever and their hair and your automobiles headliner will catch on fire.

Because you listened to the experts and used full power loads in your 357 magnum revolver, you and your passenger just lost your hearing, maybe for good. The person that attempted to carjack you is now dead and they are luckier than your passenger. You now have the picture of what I am trying to tell you and you can see what you are in for. This is but one small scenario I could tell you about. Do your self a favor before you ever carry a ported self defense weapon of any kind take it to the range and hold a piece of paper about 12 inches above the ports or the holes in the barrel and fire the gun with this paper in place.
Then you can email me and tell me that there is no problem carrying a ported handgun for defense of your life.

Why do they perpetrate this BS on the unsuspecting gun buyer (my opinion only) you should always follow the money trail. Its marketing geniuses that are very well paid to dream about Benjamin Franklin and it all comes down to improving sales at any cost to uneducated people. Use caution in making decisions for protection of life and property because once that bullet is discharged you can never call it back.

Please Note: When I was in Miami, Fl. I had reason to be in the Autopsy room at the Miami School of medicine many times and I counted 27 Autopsy tables in one very large room. I will not tell you any more. This is a cruel world and its tough on people like me that have been exposed to the side of life and reality that thankfully you will never see. You have no idea, that is most of you, how cheap life really is on the streets of any major city in this country. The very worst is yet to come.

Seal your PRIMERS and more (Re-Print)

I NOW USE BIRCHWOOD CASEY AEROSOL SYNTHETIC CLEANER IN A 13 oz. CAN. FOR ALL MY GUN CLEANING INSTEAD OF LPS MICRO X. THE VALVES WERE BAD ON THE LPS CANS AND NOT THE LIQUID CLEANER.

I live in a world of reality. I think beyond normal events as its better to prepare now in order to care for the handgun that you will rely on for the protection of life and property.
The following are a list of my priorities I feel have become a necessity. NO ONE should ever carry ammunition unless you seal your primers. I like to use bright red nail polish.

Take a box of ammo and paint the entire primer and the lettering on the rear of the case, let it dry completely, when it is absolutely dry take a paper towel and wrap it around your index finger, put nail polish remover on the paper towel and wipe off the back of the case, removing all the red nail polish except what remains in and around the primer and in the lettering, so its easy to see. Put a printed label on the box of ammo or a permanent colored round dot so you can easily identify which box has sealed primers. Your ammunition is now protected from penetrating oil of any kind, from the primer area.

I always went a step further and cleaned each carry bullet with Flitz or Simichrome polish, and then I applied Flitz pure carnuba wax to each bullet that I would constantly carry. It will prevent corrosion and it will feed better. I have been doing this for many years.
People have died because when they needed their handgun, they had a dead primer because of oil penetrating their primer. A product like WD 40 will destroy your primer.

When you select your main semi auto carry hangun you will need to stock extra magazine, recoil, firing pin springs, etc, etc. It never hurts to have a second identical handgun so you could canabalize it for parts in an emergency. I have started using Silicone wire recoil springs that are excellent. If you have selected a Government 1911 pistol stay with the factory standard 16 lb. recoil spring. I only recommend conventional recoil springs. I do not like variable recoil springs.

You must keep your carry gun clean and lightly lubricated, I use Militec (www.militec-1.com)
I clean all my guns with LPS Micro X cleaner (www.lpslabs.com) this cleaner is safe on polymer, I have had no problems. Do not put lubrication on your extractor or breech face or in your magazines. You should have at least 5 magazines. You must have extra parts such as an extractor, firing pin, magazine followers (www.trippresearch.com)
etc. Prepare now so you do not have to worry later.

All things mechanical can break at the worst time. Get extra supplies now while they are available, DO NOT WAIT, during hard times they may not be available.
LINKS FOR SPRINGS ARE ON MY HOME PAGE OF MY WEBSITE.
