MOST SINGLE-DAY CHECKS IN NICS HISTORY . . . Data derived from the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) shows that Black Friday (Nov. 25) had the most background checks for firearm purchases in a single day (129,166), with a 32 percent increase over the previous NICS high from Nov. 28, 2008. Federal law requires FBI background checks on all individuals purchasing firearms from federally licensed retailers. In an interview with USA Today, NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel Lawrence G. Keane attributed the record growth to a "burgeoning awakening of the American public that they do have a constitutional right to own guns."

NOVEMBER NSSF-ADJUSTED NICS BACKGROUND CHECKS UP 16.5% . . . On the heels of Black Friday's record-breaking NICS transactions, the FBI released background check statistics for all of November 2011. NSSF-adjusted NICS figures show an increase of 16.5 percent over the NSSF-adjusted NICS figure for November 2010. US President Barack Obama declared in ringing tones Wednesday, Nov. 30, "We don't compromise when it comes to Israel's security." Three days later, US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta in a lecture to the Brookings Institute outlined America's demands of Israel: To abstain from attacking Iran and rely on the US; to negotiate with the Palestinians; to reach out to Egypt, Turkey, Jordan, and to pursue only goals shared with the US – demands almost synonymous with the Israeli opposition's platform.

During the Bush years, the U.S. had 6-7 carrier groups deployed throughout the world. When they were brushing up against Iran, they moved 2 carrier groups near the Persian Gulf with another not so far away in the Indian Ocean.
A bit of quiet news I haven’t heard elsewhere is the map below. The U.S. still has 11 carrier groups, and as normal 2-4 are undergoing service (actually 3 right now), refueling, repairs or upgrading.
But only 3 of the remaining 8 are deployed. ALL THE OTHER U.S. carrier groups are “home at port”. I guess that’s good for military families, but for the United States it somewhat puts them in the same position as an unarmed British bobby (policeman), “stop! or I’ll say stop again!”. The U.S. could not act in less than MONTHS even if they wanted to – which the current administration clearly doesn’t.

| Russia has delivered supersonic cruise missiles to Syria despite the violence shaking the Arab country and Israel's furious condemnation of the deal, a news report said on Thursday. "The Yakhont supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles have been delivered to Syria," a military source told the Interfax news agency without disclosing when the shipment was made.
