Arizona Police Trained for Economic Civil Unrest

Mike Sunnucks, writing for the Phoenix Business Journal, reports that Arizona state and local police “say they have broad plans to deal with social unrest, including trouble resulting from economic distress. The security and police agencies declined to give specifics, but said they would employ existing and generalized emergency responses to civil unrest that arises for any reason.”

The Phoenix Police Department told the newspaper it has a Tactical Response Unit that trains “continually and has deployed on many occasions for any potential civil unrest issue,” according to Phoenix Police spokesman Andy Hill. Scottsdale Police spokesman Mark Clark said his department has similar plans “in place for such civil unrest.”
The Phoenix Business Journal notes Clark, Hill and other local police officials said the region did plenty of planning and emergency management training for the Super Bowl in February in Glendale. The training at the Super Bowl included personnel and resources from the Department of Homeland Security and the Northern Command, which coordinated with Arizona officials.
As Infowars and Prison Planet have documented, Northern Command is specifically tasked with implementing martial law under Continuity of Government. The Military Commissions Act of 2006 voided restrictions placed on the military to support civilian administration by the Posse Comitatus Act, the latter restricting the military from working with local law enforcement. In addition to the Military Commissions Act of 2006, a 1994 U.S. Defense Department Directive (DODD 3025) allows military commanders to take emergency actions in domestic situations.
A recent report by the U.S. Army War College discusses the possibility of Pentagon resources and troops being used in the event of civil unrest due to the economic crisis, “such as protests against businesses and government or runs on beleaguered banks,” according to the Phoenix Business Journal.

Russian S-300 anti-air weapon already delivered to Iran

Russian S-300s on way to guarding Iran's nuclear sites
Despite the efforts of US and Israeli leaders, Moscow has begun delivering the highly sophisticated medium-range air defense S-300 system to Iran for securing its nuclear and strategic sites against potential attack.
The RIA news agency reported Wednesday night, Dec. 18: "Moscow has earlier met its obligations to supply Tor-M1 (short-range) systems to Iran and is currently implementing its contract to deliver S-300 systems."
DEBKAfile's military sources disclose the S-300 deliveries began two weeks ago.
Their installation, coinciding with the return home of members of Iranian air defense officers from training in Russia, means that air or missile attacks on Iranian sites will henceforth be extremely difficult and carry a high price.
On 9th October, DEBKAfile's Moscow sources reported that Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert failed in the key mission of his trip to persuade Russian leaders to refrain from selling this advanced weapon to Iran and Syria.
On July 9, US Secretary of State Robert Gates said: "Based on what I know, it's highly unlikely that those air defense missiles would be in Iranian hands any time soon." Clearly, Gates was misinformed and his intelligence wrong, since five months on, those missiles are on their way to Iran.
While both the Bush administration and Israeli leaders insisted that a military option remained on the table if Iran persisted in its nuclear weapons program, neither took into account that Tehran was not deterred or standing idle.
This week, the Israeli defense ministry announced that Amos Gilead, a high official, would travel to Moscow Wednesday, Dec. 17 in a final bid to hold the Kremlin's hand. But Olmert and defense minister Ehud Barak had missed another boat.
DEBKAfile's military and intelligence sources report that after Iran, Moscow will install the S-300 in Syria, focusing on securing the Russian naval bases going up in the Mediterranean port of Tartous. By selling these countries top-line weaponry, Moscow is strengthening its military presence and influence in two Middle East countries of especial interest to the United States and Israel – a tactic Soviet Russian employed in the Cold War.

Is the Middle East "Freer, More Hopeful, and More Promising"?
In a Middle East valedictory speech today, summing up the nearly eight years of his two administrations, George W. Bush declared that "the Middle East in 2008 is a freer, more hopeful, and more promising place than it was in 2001."
I disagree. Count some of the important ways things are now worse:

And Iraq? Bush made an almost direct reply to my appeal since 2003 to place a "democratically-minded strongman" in power in Baghdad, stating that "when Saddam's regime fell, we refused to take the easy option and install a friendly strongman in his place." Bush remains convinced he did the right thing, I remain convinced that the Iraq story will end badly for the United States.
What are the positive Bush legacies? I count two. No Saddam Hussein in Iraq and a Libya that is only quasi hostile. (December 5, 2008)

Russia bids for first Israeli military purchase – spy drones

A $10-12 million transaction for Moscow to purchase Israeli spy drones for the Russian army is in negotiation with Israel's Aerospace Industries. The Russian Kommersant reported Tuesday, Dec. 16 that Gen. Vladimir Popovkin, head of Russia's armed forces, visited Israel in November for talks on the purchase of a first batch of the unmanned reconnaissance drones which Georgia used successfully in its conflict with Russia last August.
DEBKAfile's military sources report that the sale, if finally approved by the defense ministry in Tel Aviv, would be Israel's first advanced hardware sale to Russia. It would also mark a reversal of Israeli policy, since the Russian army would almost certainly use the drones in another future round of hostilities with Georgia over the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
A drone transaction with Moscow would give the Russian army a technological-intelligence edge over Caucasian and Caspian nations, like Georgia and Azerbaijan, and therefore place in doubt their future arms purchases from Israel.
Jerusalem consulted with Washington over the deal, as required under the US-Israel 2006 security pact covering Israeli weapons transfers to third countries. The advanced state of Israel-Russian negotiations indicates its approval by the outgoing Bush White House and incoming Obama administration in line with their efforts to improve relations with Moscow.

America Online is conducting a new poll asking readers whether they believe there is any merit to the controversy surrounding Barack Obama's citizenship – and most respondents say "yes."
With nearly 77,000 national votes in the unscientific survery, some might say the poll chart looks somewhat similar to this year's electoral map, except in orange and yellow.
A full 48 percent of nationwide respondents believe people should be concerned about Obama's citizenship, 45 percent say the controversy has no merit and 7 percent of voters remain undecided.
In all, 32 states agree that there could be merit to the Obama citizenship controversy.

Witness: 'Patrick Fitzgerald would be terminated'
Tony Rezko associate Elie Maloof (pictured above, right) just testified that when he received a grand jury subpoena, Rezko told him not to talk to the feds. Why?
"The federal prosecutor will no longer be the same federal prosecutor," Maloof just testified that Rezko told him. What did Rezko mean prosecutor Chris Niewoehner asked? "That Patrick Fitzgerald would be terminated and Dennis Hastert will name his replacement. The investigation will be over."
Maloof, who once helped run some of Rezko's fast-food businesses, said Rezko told him of Fitzgerald's replacement: "That they will order the prosecutor to stop the investigation."
It is the first time jurors heard an accusation that Rezko worked behind the scenes to oust Fitzgerald.
Last week, prosecutors revealed that future witness Ali Ata will also testify that he knew of a plan by Rezko to eliminated Fitzgerald and replace him with someone who wouldn't go after Rezko.
On cross examination, though, Defense lawyer William Ziegelmueller asked whether he knew that it's President who appoints U.S. Attorneys.
Maloof also testified that Rezko told him not to bring up his name to prosecutors because it would only link to Gov. Blagojevich.
The conversation with Rezko, took place in February, 2004 inside of Rezko's Wilmette mansion. Only Rezko's housekeeper was there, aside from Maloof and Rezko.
Maloof said as they talked, Rezko had three cell phones in front of him.
"It was kind of weird, he had three cell phones in front of him," Maloof said.
When Maloof asked why, Rezko explained: "Just in case somebody’s listening," Maloof said.
What did he mean? “If the feds were listening.”
Was Mr. Rezko joking?
"No, it wasn’t a joke," Maloof said.
Maloof left the stand without ever invoking Barack Obama's name, despite previous allegations by prosecutors that he made a straw donation for Rezko to Obama's Senatorial campaign fund. It is clear that lawyers -- and the judge -- have been careful not to bring Obama's name into case, even outside the presence of the jury.
After Maloof left the stand, cameras chased him out of the federal courts building.
Newspaper photographers and television camera crews hustled to get in front of Maloof and, in what is a common scene in federal court, walked backwards, attempting not to run into one another while staying out of the rain.
Then Maloof asked something surprising: "You need me to slow down for you?"
Everyone nodded.
He did.
