USS Mount Whitney enters Black Sea
DEBKAfile’s military sources report Washington is testing the Turkish government’s response to the permanent anchoring of US warships at either of the two Georgian ports of Poti or Batumi. This would be quid pro quo for Moscow’s interest in bases in Iranian Azerbaijan and the Persian Gulf.
Monday, Sept. 8, a NATO delegation was due in Georgia to evaluate damage to military structure following the five-day war with Russia last month. This is a further irritant for Moscow after the highly sophisticated American command vessel USS Mount Whitney docked in Poti Saturday.
Our sources report that the US anticipates a protracted period of tension with Russia for the following reasons:
1. US and NATO vessels will need safe coastal berths when the approaching winter storms strike the Black Sea. As time goes by, Turkey, which under international conventions controls the passage of naval vessels through the Dardanelles, will be under increasing pressure from Russia to block the waterway to NATO.
Already, Turkey fears it may lose its top trading partner, Russia. Since the outbreak of the Georgian crisis a month ago, Moscow has introduced new customs regulations which have backed up at checkpoints dozens of Turkish trucks carrying export goods. The predicted loss to Turkish firms is some $1 billion so far, a figure that would treble if Moscow continued its unacknowledged sanction up to the end of the year.
2. A permanent base in a Georgian port is seen by US strategists as the quickest way to show the flag for Georgian president Mikhail Saakashvili without a frontal clash with Russia.
Washington sources argue that if Russia can maintain a large fleet base at the Crimean port of Sevastopol and a second at Abkhazia, there is no reason why America cannot maintain a permanent presence on the Black Sea too.
3. Washington is well aware of the talk in Moscow and Tehran in recent days about establishing Russian naval bases in Iran: Iranian Azerbaijan on the Caspian Sea and an Iranian-held island in the Persian Gulf.
The latter, if Moscow and Tehran reached agreement, would terminate US naval control of the Persian Gulf waters opposite Iran forces and drastically upset the balance of strength in the region. Washington’s response to this talk is its bid for a permanent Black Sea base.

WSJ: Obama Won't Ban Guns, 'I Don't Have the Votes in Congress'
- At the OnTap blog, Cam Edwards passes along a Wall Street Journal report from the campaign trail in Pennsylvania on Friday that found Barack Obama digging himself a rhetorical hole on gun control, even in front of a hand-picked crowd.
“If you’ve got a gun in your house, I’m not taking it,’’ Obama said. But the Illinois senator could still see skeptics in the crowd, particularly on the faces of several men at the back of the room.
So he tried again. “Even if I want to take them away, I don’t have the votes in Congress,’’ he said. “This can’t be the reason not to vote for me. Can everyone hear me in the back? I see a couple of sportsmen back there. I’m not going to take away your guns.’’
So Obama went from saying he wouldn't take away guns...to suggesting he wanted to, but Congress won't let him. So he goes from suggesting to gun-rights voters that they should be worried about him as president, to suggesting they better elect a gun-rights Congress to restrain his gun-controlling impulses.
The national media has not really noticed the kinds of wild anti-gun proposals Obama has made in his career, like this one the Chicago Defender reported during his unsuccessful run for Congress in 1999:

MY PERSONAL COMMENTARY - Teddy Jacobson
In a world of compromise I will not, I never did in my entire life, I never made many friends but I have always been true to my ideals and to the people that I have talked to and dealt with. The BS stops here because without integrity and loyalty at least to ones self and to your G-D you are nothing but a dreamer and a fraud. REMEMBER YOU CAN NOT TAKE YOUR MONEY WITH YOU TO THE GRAVE.
The world has changed and I want to remind you of a story from the Bible that still haunts me, it is about the TOWER OF BABEL where G-D changed every ones language so that they could not communicate in order to stop the construction of the tower. At this point in time G-D has done this again, but he has not changed our language but there is no more communication, its all about personal human greed that he must stop and he will.
If people do not start to put reality and integrity and morality first along with G-D we are doomed to fail. As in Deuteronomy Chapter 28, this is serious business that people on the average do not even have a clue of what is coming if they do not listen and do the correct thing. Human greed by our existing politicians is beyond anything I have ever seen before as our two border patrol agents rot in jail for nothing.
I pray for Campias and Ramon all the time for the harsh treatment they received and our military are often put on trial for doing their job. SOLDIERS ARE TRAINED TO KILL, THAT IS THEIR JOB. POLICE ARE TRAINED TO PROTECT LIFE AND PROPERTY. Paybacks from our DEITY will be severe is short order. My son was in the military and I was in Law Enforcement a lifetime ago.
I am 67 years old now and in declining health and I never give up, I treat all my customers with complete honesty. I find my work as good or better than ever but I can not do near as much of it as I would like. I stay home with my blind DOG which has become my job to protect her with my life if need be. GREED DOES NOT EXIST IN MY LIFE.
After my last blog on helpful tip of the day I have absolutely no respect for the radio talk show host I spoke about because he refused to call me and he is in it for the money. I am still working on Civillian and Police and Military and Special Ops pistols and Revolvers to keep them alive, I want them all to come home and if I can help them do that that is what I will take to the grave with me. That in itself will give me reason to keep up the good fight and continue my work as long as I can.
After having seen most of both Political conventions I now can see we have but one choice and one path which is to vote for Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin. The Democrats have an extreme socialist agenda that remind me of Karl MARX. All my grand parents left Russia in the 1800's because of the miserable life they had in that part of the world. They all taught me good values and religion which has never left me.
Our Military is broken, make no mistake, we can not fight another ground war with 50 year old National Guard troops in 115 degree heat carrying 80 lb. packs on their backs. The enemy are radical ISLAM and these people are not only high on drugs but think nothing of cutting your head off. They use armor piercing ammunition while our troops drive in armored humvees that their bullets zip right through. We can not win a war like this. And if our troops do something to protect themselves our government puts them on trial, we are imploding from within.
Its all in LEVITICUS CHAPTER 26 - VERSE 19, 20 (our super power status is coming to an end).....this is not me saying this, this is coming from the G-D we pray to every day.
I have read everything I could on OBAMA and to this day I have no idea where this man was born. He has no background in anything but socialism. His running mate was caught cheating in college, its in the NY TIMES (not exactly a Republican news paper).
Not me just telling you stories. I just do not know, but I can not afford to vote for a socialist as we are in enough trouble as is.
I am not much at typing and I will do what I can this morning and I will type more tomorrow. You must take things seriously as our time is short and the enemy is at our back door like VENEZUELA and CUBA and MEXICO. There is no telling what weapons have already gotten into our country because our administration wanted an open border, but why, THE GATES OF HELL ARE WAITING AND ARE WATCHING AS G-D SEES IT ALL.
G-D is using the weather as a weapon against us, every time the US Government tries to divide "JERUSALEM" we will pay the price. NO MAN OR WOMAN ON EARTH CAN DIVIDE A CITY THAT BELONGS TO G-D. "THE CITY OF PEACE" THERE WILL BE A PRICE TO PAY FROM THE DEITY.
I want to suggest that all of you that believe me get your act together now as the clock is ticking, get your water supplies and your food supplies and your medical supplies and what ever else you need, by now you know the drill, hide your ammo and seal your primers. The waters in the Caribbean and around Latin America for a long time have provided a path for illicit drugs to flow into the United States, but the U.S. Navy has increased its patrols in the region now looking for something else – Hezbollah terrorists, according to a report from Joseph Farah's G2 Bulletin.
The Navy, in trolling for mini-submarines sometimes used to transport drugs, has discovered that some of them apparently are being operated by Hezbollah.
The mini-subs are small semi-submersibles, made of fiberglass and capable of carrying up to four people plus a payload. They are popular with drug smugglers, and now the U.S. is concerned elements of Hezbollah have begun using them for drug-running or smuggling weapons.
"In 2006, we were tracking around three of these," said Navy Admiral James Stavridis, commander of U.S. Southern Command. "In the year 2007, (the number) jumped to about 30. This year so far, in three months, we've seen about 30."
In drawing the connection to Hezbollah, Stravridis said there is concern about the "tri-border area (of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay). It is, in my view, principally Hezbollah activity.

Joe Biden’s history of plagiarism and “stressless scholarship” gave plenty of ammo to his enemies, one of them choosing to circulate a so-called “attack video” to demonstrate Biden’s outright plagiarism of a British politician’s speech. But this appropriation from Neal Kinnock was not the first occurrence of unacknowledged lifting by the senator from Delaware.
In 1965 Biden plagiarized while writing a paper as a student at the Syracuse University Law School in a legal methods course which he failed because of that copied paper. Such “stressless scholarship” as it is euphemistically called has become all too common in the modern Internet era with countless cheatsites and “research services” offering to sell students papers on topics from A to Z.
Biden’s case demonstrates that student plagiarism is nothing new. Only the methods of cheating have changed. Today, cheating has gone digital with the proliferation of Internet based paper filing and distributions systems, but the principles—or lack thereof—are the same. And as the Biden case illustrates, getting caught for such academic dishonesty may have serious ramifications for one’s political career. Joe Biden’s failed bid for the Democratic ticket is a case in point.
“Stressless scholarship” may seem like a pretty good idea at the time that many students make that decision to ‘crib’, copy, or dowload a paper off the Internet, but in Biden’s case the plagiarism of his student days came back to haunt his bid for the democratic presidential nomination like a spectre from his past.
In an article entitled “Biden’s Belly Flop”, Newsweek printed Joe Biden’s yearbook picture from his college days and a copy of his law school transcripts with the big “F” in his transcripts circled. Biden was given a chance to repeat his legal methods course, and above the “F” his retake grade of 80% was eventually penciled in. Being a repeat offender when it came to plagiarism made things much, much worse for Biden than they might have been otherwise in his failed bid for the Democratic presidential ticket in 1987.
Senator Biden’s plagiarism of a speech by British Labor Party leader Neal Kinnock took place at a campaign stump at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. In closing his speech, Biden took Kinnock’s ideas and language as if they were his very own inspired thoughts, prefacing Kinnock’s ideas with the phrase “I started thinking as I was coming over here . . . “. Little did Biden suspect that video footage of this speech would be spliced together with footage of Kinnock’s speech in an “attack video” which would be distributed by members of the Dukakis campaign.
Making the headline news in the New York Times, and the evening news on TV, the video was a stab in the back for Biden by his democratic competitor, and although he insisted that “I’m in this race to stay. I’m in this race to win,” the resulting publicity surrounding his unacknowledged use of Neal Kinnock’s speech was what eventually forced him out of the race. Name recognition was no longer a problem for Biden, but not the kind of name recognition which would assist his campaign for the democratic presidential nomination. His name was now a byword for plagiarism. His situation became a classic example of plagiarism for high school teachers and college instructors across the nation lecturing on the evils of unacknowledged source use.
Biden initially denied any wrongdoing, claiming that this was just an inadvertent lack of acknowledgement. Yet there were other instances of rhetorical borrowing from speeches made by Robert F. Kennedy and Hubert Humphrey. And the fact that Biden had given other speeches using the Kinnock passages without acknowledgment suggested that the lifting was more than just an inadvertent oversight.
As with Al Gore’s case, the perception existed in the public mind that Biden just wasn’t the real thing. He wasn’t authentic, didn’t have thoughts and ideas of his own, and was a malleable piece of clay being molded by his handlers to suit the political whims and fancies which they thought would appeal to voters. A Time magazine article by Walter Shapairo was pretty much on the money in offering the speculation that “In the end, Biden may be remembered as the candidate who truly offered the voters an echo and not a choice.”
William Safire, former speechwriter for Richard Nixon, gloated in the New York Times over Biden’s demise, quoting a supposedly “embittered Democrat” who said, “I’m going back to Gary Hart . . . At least he didn’t steal that girl from some far-lefty in England.” And he concluded his op-ed column with a swipe at Biden’s ability to think apart from his speechwriter: “So my advice to candidates like Joe Biden is this: Do justly, love perorations and walk humbly with thy speechwriter. (I forget where I got that, but it has a nice ring to it.) ”
With all the press he was receiving over his Neal Kinnock plagiarism courtesy of the Dukakis “attack videos”, Biden was quickly becoming the “most famous political plagiarist of our time”, as Thomas Mallon describes the unfortunate Delaware senator. It was just a matter of time before Biden would have to bow out of the democratic primary.
Biden himself thought that all the attention to his rhetorical borrowing was “frankly ludicrous”, and the media analysts generally agreed, stating that is was “hardly a capital offense”, but as William Safire put it, “times have changed; you can’t get away with borrowing anything these days – not even an oratorical technique, much less a phrase or paragraph – unless you are willing to give the attribution.” If Gore’s loss of the presidency to George W. Bush in 2000 was more indirectly related to plagiarism, it is evident that Biden’s case is without question a direct result of his unacknowledged use of Kinnock’s speech as if it were his very own. This instance of plagiarism and the public exposure it received cut short the presidential aspirations of an otherwise gifted orator and statesman.

Demanding all or nothing, the Palestinians have refused to accept a partial peace accord with Israel, essentially ruling out any possibility of an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement being reached by January, the target date set at last year’s Annapolis summit.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas rejected Israel’s idea of an interim peace agreement at a brief summit on August 31 between the Palestinian leader and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, according to a Palestinian negotiator.
Olmert’s aides said the Israeli prime minister hoped the Palestinians would sign a document outlining any agreements reached with Israel before he leaves office. Abbas flatly refused, according to Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat. “We want an agreement to end the (Israeli) occupation and establish an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital,” Erekat told the Associated Press. “President Abbas told Olmert that we will not be part of an interim or shelf agreement. Either we agree on all issues, or no agreement at all.”
The Israelis apparently tried to put a more positive spin on the meeting, with Olmert spokesman Mark Regev saying that “significant progress had been made in the talks,” but “there are still considerable gaps between the two sides.”
“Considerable” is an understatement, considering how much the Israelis are offering and the Palestinians’ refusal to even consider it. Associated Press reports: “Officials in Olmert’s office said Israel has proposed giving the Palestinians all of Gaza, 93 percent of the West Bank along with Israeli land equivalent to 5.5 percent of the West Bank, as well as a land corridor through Israel to link the two separate territories. The Palestinians have said that offer is unacceptable” (August 31).
Such thinking is the same as that of Yasser Arafat, who refused an offer of a Palestinian state back in 2000 that would have included most of the West Bank and East Jerusalem and instead ordered the uprising that became the second intifada.

The raids were disclosed by UPI chief editor Arnaud de Borchgrave, who is also on the Washington Times staff, and picked up by the Iranian Fars news agency. The Russian raids of two Georgian airfields, which Tbilisi had allowed Israel to use for a potential strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities, followed the Georgian offensive against South Ossetia on Aug. 7.
Under the secret agreement with Georgia, the airfields had been earmarked for use by Israeli fighter-bombers taking off to strike Iran in return for training and arms supplies.
DEBKAfile’s intelligence sources report that flying from S. Georgia over the Caspian Sea to Iran would sharply trim the distance to be spanned by Israeli fighter-bombers, reducing flying time to 3.5 hours.
Northern Iran and the Tehran region, where most of the nuclear facilities are concentrated, would be within range, with no need to request US permission to pass through Iraq air space.
Russian Special Forces also raided other Israeli facilities in southern Georgia and captured Israeli spy drones, says the report.
Israel was said to have used the two airfields to “conduct recon flights over southern Russia as well as into nearby Iran.” The US intelligence sources quoted by UPI reported that the Russian force also carried home other Israeli military equipment captured at the air bases.
Our sources say that if the Russians got hold of an Israeli unmanned aerial vehicle complete with sophisticated electronic reconnaissance equipment, they will have secured some of the IDF’s most secret devices for spying on Iran and Syria.
When this happened before, Russian military engineers quickly dismantled the equipment, studied it and passed the technology on to Tehran and Damascus.

Sen. Barack Obama's official campaign blogger was a self-proclaimed student of Karl Marx as an undergraduate at Harvard who proudly displayed a Soviet communist flag in his dorm room.
Sam Graham-Felsen, after graduating from Harvard in 2003, published an article in an avowedly socialist magazine that expressed sympathy for the 2006 Paris street riots, which he observed in person. He has posted dozens of comments and articles on the blog of the leftist publication The Nation.
Behind the bar in his Quincy House suite at Harvard, Graham-Felsen hung a Communist Party flag that he and a roommate brought back from Russia, according to an article published in the Harvard Crimson when he was a senior.
The Crimson article also noted Graham-Felsen's bookcase in the Quincy house dorm included titles by Karl Marx and Howard Zinn, the socialist political science professor at Boston University known for his anti-American history texts and his extreme anti-war protest activity.

Barack Obama is a socialist.
We were pretty sure this was the case after he made his remarks about how bitter people in small towns cling to religion. As Bill Kristol points out, this is very similar to Karl Marx’ line about religion being the opiate of the masses, if not as eloquent as the original German “Die Religion … ist das Opium des Volkes.” Senator Joe Lieberman reinforced this, observing, “I’d hesitate to say he’s a Marxist, but he’s got some positions that are far to the left of me and I think mainstream America.”
Now, we learn that in 1965, when Obama was 4 years old, his dad, writing as “Barak H. Obama” (the Communist-preferred spelling) wrote an essay on “African Socialism and its Applicability to Planning in Kenya” that wasn’t particularly critical of socialism.
