Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., says it's the responsibility of the states to make sure political candidates are eligible for the officesthey seek, but he's in favor of both state and federal demands that future presidential candidates have a formal procedure to document their qualifications.
The relatively strong statement from Coburn on the issue of the eligibility of a president came in a recent letter to a constituent who contacted WND.
"The bill requires any federal candidates' campaign committee filing with the Federal Election Commission to produce a copy of the candidate's birth certificate," he wrote. "If the bill makes it to the Senate, I will likely support it."
Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., wants to legalize marijuana and has introduced legislation that would accomplish his goals.
"Criminalizing choices that adults make because we think they are unwise ones, when the choices involved have no negative effect on the rights of others, is not appropriate in a free society," he said in his new announcement about his plans for two bills.
One proposal would remove federal penalties for using marijuana and the second would let people in states where "medical marijuana" is allowed use it freely.
The cosponsors on the bills include Reps. Ron Paul, R-Texas and Maurice Hinchey, D-N.Y.
"To those who say that the government should not be encouraging the smoking of marijuana, my response is that I completely agree," Frank's statement said. "But it is a great mistake to divide all human activity into two categories: those that are criminally prohibited, and those that are encouraged."
Khamenei in tough sermon defends presidential election, warns protesters
June 19, 2009, 3:26 PM (GMT+02:00)
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in stern, uncompromising mode
In his first public appearance since the disputed presidential election of June 12, Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Iran's enemies sought to shake the people's confidence and trust in the Islamic regime. They suffered an earthquake and the Islamic regime won a celebration. Revolutionary Guards commander Mohsein Rezai was the only one of the three losing presidential candidates to be present at the mass-attended Friday sermon at the main mosque in Tehran.
The street rallies, Khamenei charged, were used as the cover for Western "armed terrorist groups" who attacked Bassij militiamen and Tehran University of Tehran students. He said the "street riots" are the wrong way and must stop, or else their leader would be held responsible for the consequences.
Without trust, the voters would not have turned out in such numbers, said Khamenei. He asked rhetorically: How can voting be rigged when there is a difference of 11 million votes [between the candidates]?" and won loud cheers. He criticized the mutually vituperative campaigns of winner Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and loser Mir Hossein Mousavi and attacked the allegations of corruption against Rafsanjani and his family. But he said he and the president were close on foreign policy. This was an expression of support for Ahmadinejad's approach to the US.
They shouted "Death to America!" when the supreme leader poured contempt on what he called US repression in Afghanistan, its destruction of Iraq and treatment of the Palestinians.
Khamenei attacked the United Kingdom as the most treacherous of Iran's enemies.
The audience shouted: "Death to the UK, Israel and the US!"
Three months ago, he said, "I heard whispers of a rigged vote." He accused the Zionist-ruled media of stirring up treasonable crowd demonstrations. "But the vote was free and transparent. All the candidates and their campaigns were within the revolutionary establishment. None of the four came from outside. There was no campaign for and against the Islamic regime. The election showed religious democracy for all the world to see and how it brought the people together in solidarity behind the Islamic revolution."
The audience cheered loudly when Ahmadinejad's name was said and again when he said corruption should be fought.

Why the Peace Process Is Not Working
June 18, 2009 | From theTrumpet.com
Netanyahu’s speech—and the Arab leaders’ reactions—gets to the heart of the issue.By Richard Palmer
Why is there no peace in Israel? Over the past few weeks, two key leaders gave their views on the matter. To U.S. President Barack Obama, it is the fault of Israeli settlers. To Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, it is the fault of the Arabs for refusing to recognize Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state. Who is right?
“The United States does not accept the legitimacy of continued Israeli settlements,” said Mr. Obamato much applause in Cairo. “This construction violates previous agreements and undermines efforts to achieve peace. It is time for these settlements to stop.”
But would peace be any easier without the settlements?
Mr. Netanyahu said no in his speechat the Bar-Ilan University on Sunday:
Those who think that the continued enmity toward Israel is a product of our presence in Judea, Samaria and Gaza, is confusing cause and consequence. The attacks against us began in the 1920s, escalated into a comprehensive attack in 1948 with the declaration of Israel’s independence, continued with the fedayeen attacks in the 1950s, and climaxed in 1967, on the eve of the Six Day War, in an attempt to tighten a noose around the neck of the State of Israel. All this occurred during the 50 years before a single Israeli soldier ever set foot in Judea and Samaria.
If settlements were really the root cause of the lack of peace, then surely peace would have been achieved before the settlements even existed.
Mr. Netanyahu pointed instead to a factor that has been in existence from the foundation of the modern nation of Israel until today. The Arab nations simply do not want peace with Israel.
“[W]e must be firmly connected to reality, to the truth,” said Netanyahu. “And the simple truth is that the root of the conflict was, and remains, the refusal to recognize the right of the Jewish people to a state of their own, in their historic homeland.”
If one side refuses to recognize the right of the other to exist, then no amount of haggling over settlements will help. The so-called occupation is not the issue. Israeli prime ministers have actually offered the Palestinians their own state, including half of Jerusalem. The Palestinians merely responded with violence.
In his speech, Mr. Netanyahu outlined several conditions for a peaceful two-state solution. The Palestinians must recognize the right of Israel to exist, and solve the refugee problem outside of Israel’s borders. The Palestinian state must be demilitarized. Jerusalem must remain the unified capital of Israel.
The Arab world’s reaction to Netanyahu’s offer proves what the fundamental problem is with the peace process. “Netanyahu’s demand that Palestinians recognize Israel as the Jewish state is ruining the chance for peace,” said Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. “Not Egypt, nor any other Arab country would support Netanyahu’s approach,” he said.
Spokesman for Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, Nabil Abu Rdainah, said that Netanyahu’s speech “torpedoes all peace initiatives in the region.”
Yasser Abed Rabbo, another Abbas aide, said that to recognize Israel’s Jewish character was “to become part of the global Zionist movement.”
One of Abbas’s senior negotiators, Saeb Erekat, said that Netanyahu “will have to wait 1,000 years before he finds one Palestinian who will go along with him with this feeble state.”
Erekat threatened that if Barack Obama did not force Netanyahu to stick with the U.S. road map for peace, then Obama would “close off the path of peace tonight and set the whole region on the path of violence, chaos, extremism and bloodletting.”
Statements like these make it clear why the peace process is not working.
Change in Israeli Policy?
Previously, Israel’s peace process was based on the land-for-peace formula. But Netanyahu’s speech could mark an important break with that position. Geopolitical analyst George Friedman said June 16:
[Netanyahu] did shift his policy dramatically. For, let’s say, the past 40 years Israeli policy has been land-for-peace; that in exchange for a peace agreement, the Israelis would withdraw. Netanyahu changed that position. He said, We have tried withdrawing from territories. We tried withdrawing from Gaza. The response was rockets. We’ve tried all sorts of maneuvers, all sorts of discussions. Every time we get close, it fails. The issue is not, in his mind, land-for-peace. The issue is the recognition of the right of Israel to exist.
As far back as 1996, Trumpet editor in chief Gerald Flurry wrote about a prophecy in Hosea 5:13 that states, “When Ephraim saw his sickness, and Judah saw his wound, then went Ephraim to the Assyrian, and sent to king Jareb: yet could he not heal you, nor cure you of your wound.” Mr. Flurry explained that the Hebrew word for “wound” indicates that it is referring to the peace process (for more information, see our free booklet Jerusalem in Prophecy). When Israel sees that the peace process is sapping its strength, it goes to Germany for help.
Israel could be starting to see its wound right now. “Many good people have told us that withdrawal from territories is the key to peace with the Palestinians,” said Netanyahu. “Well, we withdrew. But the fact is that every withdrawal was met with massive waves of terror, by suicide bombers and thousands of missiles.” The fruits show that land-for-peace hasn’t worked.
Israel’s relations with America are suffering. In contrast, after Netanyahu’s speech, German Chancellor Angela Merkel invited the Israeli prime minister to Germany. Watch for this relationship to blossom in the future.

Shocker! Most Americans know of Obama eligibility questions Despite near media blackout on coverage, 49.3% 'troubled,' think he should release birth certificate
Editor's note: This is the second of a series of monthly "Freedom Index" polls conducted exclusively for WND by the public opinion research and media consulting companyWenzel Strategies.
WASHINGTON – It may be the issue few in the media dare address, but a new scientific public opinion survey of a cross-section of Americans shows they are not only aware of questions about Barack Obama's constitutional eligibility for office, but almost half are either "troubled" by the questions or believe he should release all relevant documents including his long-form birth certificate.
Asked if they are aware of the questions raised about Obama's constitutional eligibility for office, 51.3 percent answered affirmatively, while only 18.7 percent said no. Another 30 percent said they were unsure.
"Our polling shows that the questions surrounding Barack Obama's eligibility to serve as president clearly strike a nerve across America, probably because it is a problem that everybody understands," said pollster Fritz Wenzel. "Every American citizen has a birth certificate, and once in a while we all have to produce them to get a drivers license or gain entrance to school. Everyone understands the simple rules – if you don't produce it, you don't get in. And while Obama did get in to the White House, nearly half the country's adults – 49 percent – are troubled by this issue and still want him to produce his official long-form birth certificate."
Support in the U.S. House for a proposal that would require presidential candidates to provide documentation of how they meet the U.S. Constitution's requirement that the person who occupies the Oval Office be a "natural born citizen" suddenly has quadrupled.
There now are four cosponsors to H.R. 1503 from freshman Rep. Bill Posey, R-Fla., an amendment to the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971.
According to the Library of Congress bill-tracking website, H.R. 1503 would "require the principal campaign committee of a candidate for election to the office of president to include with the committee's statement of organization a copy of the candidate's birth certificate, together with such other documentation as may be necessary to establish that the candidate meets the qualifications for eligibility to the Office of President under the Constitution."
JERUSALEM – Former President Jimmy Carter passed a message to Hamas from the Obama administration, according to senior sources in the Islamist group.
The sources did not disclose the content of the purported message or whether the communication was written or oral. They spoke on condition of anonymity, because they said Hamas had not yet reached a decision on officially releasing the information they were divulging.
Separately, in an interview with WND today, Ahmed Yousef, Hamas' chief political adviser in Gaza, refused to confirm or deny that any message was passed to his group from the White House.
Youssef said, however, Carter is the "right person" to serve as a middle man between Hamas and the Obama administration.
"If we have anything to communicate, Carter will be the right person to convey messages from the movement (Hamas) to this (Obama) administration or from the administration to the movement," said Yousef, speaking from Gaza.
Yousef told WND he spent three hours with Carter today, holding private meetings and also showing the former president areas of Gaza that were damaged during Israel's 22-day campaign against Hamas that ended in January.
I have an important favor to ask you, as a user of MILITEC-1. We’ve avoided making this request, but it has now become necessary. I need you to communicate with your senators and representatives in Congress, telling of your experience with MILITEC-1 weapons lubricant. Congress needs to hear from real-world MILITEC-1 users, to understand its value in combat. This communication to Congress should come from service members, their families, and friends.
You may be aware that Militec, Inc., has been struggling for years to have its product made available again to service members through the regular supply system. Certain Army officials insist that its MilSpec CLP – cleaner, lubricant, and preservative – is perfectly suited to lube your weapons in combat. And they insist that, since MILITEC-1 does not meet MilSpec laboratory conditions, it is not suited for use by you in the real world of combat. Those officials have repeatedly canceled and blocked the National Stock Numbers (NSN’s) for MILITEC-1, and have prevented it from being made available to you through supply channels.
Since 9/11, I have provided over 600,000 free bottles MILITEC-1 to every service member who requested it. I believe that MILITEC-1 provides a live-saving advantage in combat, and I have been determined that all of you will have that advantage, even if I have to give it to you.
Now, I have reached the point where it’s very difficult to provide product to our service members, without the supply system’s purchasing it and shipping it through regular supply channels. I have tried in vain to define the benefits of MILITEC-1 in the field, but Army officials maintain that it must conform to MilSpec as tested in Army laboratories.
Thousands – literally – of your emails to me testify to MILITEC-1's superior performance in field conditions, especially in dry, dusty or desert environments. If service members, including family and friends will share their experiences with MILITEC-1 with their two senators and their representative in the House of Representatives, congressional interest can break the logjam I face in certain Army offices.
I need your help. Please use your own words to describe your experiences with MILITEC-1. Army officials dismiss our field reports as “anecdotal, unsubstantiated evidence.” I believe that the combined experience of thousands of service members is more than anecdotal. Your help now is very important.

Beware! That folding knife in your pocket may turn you into a criminal if the Obama administration gets its way. Although there has been a lot of fear and speculation that the new administration wants to take your guns, the most pressing threat now is actually to your pocket knives. With the changing of the guard at U.S. Customs, that agency has now embarked on redefining "switchblades" under federal law to include a wide variety of one hand opening knives that never were intended to be prohibited. In fact, many of the knives U.S. Customs now seek to prohibit under the Federal Switchblade Law had not even been invented at the time of its enactment! Furthermore, four previous U.S. Customs ruling letters (prior administrations) specifically determined "assisted opening" knives not to be defined as switchblades.
This new proposed U.S. Customs regulation is so broad that thousands of pocket knives will fall under its sweep and millions of knife owners will be affected. The problem is not simply that imports will be banned (which is bad enough), but that the "agency determination" will be used by domestic courts and law enforcement to determine what a "switchblade" is under both federal and state laws. Many states, including New Hampshire, fail to define switchblades and simply rely on the federal definition.
Luckily, the two premiere knife organizations in the US, American Knife and Tool Institute (AKTI) and Kniferights.org, are fighting hard on this issue, but they both need your immediate help. Customs is attempting to jam this new regulation though at record speed.
U.S. Customs has proposed revoking earlier rulings that assisted opening knives are not switchblades. The proposed new rule would not only outlaw assisted opening knives its broad definition could also easily be interpreted to include one-handed opening knives and even most other pocket knives.
Note that customs interpretation of the Federal Switchblade Act forms the basis for national, state and even local law and judicial rulings in many cases. The effect is NOT limited to just imports.
URGENT NEWS - U.S. Customs Proposalwould characterize assisted-openers as switchblade knives and jeopardize all pocket knives. On behalf of the entire sporting knife industry and knife owners across the country, AKTI will be filing an official response to U.S. Customs.
This is the biggest threat to American knife owners in U.S. history. AKTI informs us that this "Customs' proposal will make criminal out of 35.6 million Americans."
AKTI further states:
U.S. Customs proposes to bypass Congress and expand the switchblade definition to include all knives that open with one hand. These include multi-tools, traditional pocket knives, one-hand openers, and assisted-openers.
More than 35.6 million law-abiding Americans now own one-hand-openingknives in one of the above four categories.
AKTI suggests that to register your opposition to the U.S. Customs'plan (19 CFR Part 177) to re-classify assisted openers and all folding knives; address your comments by June 21, 2009, to:

................................................................................................ The Unthinkable Will Happen!
June 15, 2009 | From theTrumpet.com
Nuclear proliferation leading to nuclear annihilation—the once unthinkable becomes the greatest fear of the experts.
“Is the world more dangerous today than it was at the height of the Cold War?”
United Press International’s editor at large, Arnaud de Borchgrave, recently asked that question.
His reply?
“Anyone who’s still anyone in the field of nuclear arms control has weighed in with a resounding ‘yes’” (May 29).
A year ago when British Prime Minister Gordon Brown published his government’s first National Security Strategy, the Independent newspaper reported that it pointed out “The UK faces a ‘serious and sustained threat from violent extremists.’ Terrorists are willing to stage suicide attacks and aspire to use chemical, biological and radiological weapons. Large nuclear arsenals remain and the ambitions of North Korea and Iran cause concern. … The upheavals in ‘failed and fragile’ states reverberate around the world” (March 20, 2008).
Addressing North Korea’s most recent nuclear test and missile firings, in addition to its renunciation of the 1953 armistice agreements, de Borchgrave stated that this was but “the latest red flag on a dark nuclear horizon.” Looking back over a career in the news industry spanning over 60 years from the onset of the Cold War in 1947 to the present day, de Borchgrave noted that “Nuclear terrorism, unthinkable during the Cold War, is now the most immediate fear of the experts” (emphasis mine).
Thirty years ago, Herbert Armstrong, referring to the nuclear threat, declared in a message to his supporters, “The unthinkable is coming!” Few believed him then. Today, as de Borchgrave stated, nuclear terrorism has become in this day and age “the most immediate fear of the experts”!
The United Nations is about to apply sanctions against North Korea. That’s like slapping the nation over the wrist with a wet tram ticket—and North Korean leader Kim Jong Il knows it. His response has been to simply ratchet up his nation’s offensive nuclear weapons program.
Added to the grave risk posed to the world by North Korea’s nuclear antics, Iran appears to have significantly destabilized as a result of alleged dubious practices during its recent election. With this nation reportedly only nine months away from possessing a nuclear capability, foreign-policy experts are increasingly concerned at how to contain any further proliferation of nuclear arms, which simply raises the risk of some madman triggering the “unthinkable.”
Reflecting over his long career as a news analyst, commentator and editor, Arnoud de Borchgrave observed that the world is “far less safe than it ever was during the Cold War.” He limited his main observations to four nations that are currently in various stages of instability—North Korea, Pakistan, Iran and Israel. De Borchgrave’s main concern is neither North Korea, nor Iran or Israel. It is the prospect of the proliferation of nuclear weapons from Pakistan leaking to non-state actors, in particular the various terrorist enterprises that inhabit the unstable region of Central Asia.
He pointed to “the Pakistani nuclear establishment in Kahuta, 36 miles from Islamabad. Created by How-I-learned-to-stop-worrying-and-love-the-bomb Abdul Qadeer Khan, the super-secret Khan Research Laboratories and missile-building facility employs some 7,000 nuclear engineers and scientists, and enriches enough plutonium to produce about six nuclear weapons a year.”
So who are the Khan Laboratories’ customers? Just where is the market for these six nuclear weapons that come off the Khan production line each year? The more nuclear weapons produced and the more terrorist enterprises there are in the market for them, the greater the risk of one crazed mind igniting a global nuclear holocaust.
Concerning Iran’s nuclear ambitions, de Borchgrave observed that they are “another red flag on a troubled geopolitical horizon that makes the world far less safe than it ever was during the Cold War. A.Q. Khan began helping the mullahs with nuclear know-how almost 30 years ago. Shortly after the clerics kicked out the late shah’s pro-Western monarchy in early 1979, the supreme leader, Ayatollah (‘Sign of God’) Ruhollah Khomeini, gave his benediction to a nuclear weapons future. The shah told this reporter Iran would one day be a full-fledged nuclear power, and when he went into exile, Iran had 10 nuclear reactors on order—five from the United States and five from Western Europe.”
Then there’s the tiny nation of Israel, struggling since its inception to establish itself within secure, internationally recognized borders. It now has to contend with the risk of the loss of its traditional protector, America, as the current U.S. administration, under the leadership of a president seemingly closer in orientation to Israel’s enemies than its friends, is in process of severing that connection.
De Borchgrave commented,
Iran’s nukes are also pulling Israel’s new Netanyahu government and the Obama administration apart. For the first time since 1956, when President Eisenhower ordered Israel, France and Britain out of their occupation of the Suez Canal, U.S. and Israeli strategic interests are no longer seen as one and the same.
For Israel, Jewish settlements in the West Bank have nothing to do with Iran’s secret nuclear weapons program. A majority of Israelis say Iran’s coming nuclear attractions constitute an existential crisis for the survival of a Jewish state. For President Obama, Israel’s creeping annexation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem is making a Palestinian state impossible, which, in turn, leads to what Jordan’s King Abdullah predicts will be another war in 2010.
Jordan’s King Abdullah is observably the most moderate of all Arab leaders. His prediction of the prospect of war in the Middle East should not be taken as a threat, but rather as a dire warning of the pressures mounting in the region in the absence of any progress in the stalemated peace process between Israel and Iran’s proxies which exert increasing influence within the Palestinian movement to gain territory and legitimacy for Palestinians as a recognized state.
Plainly, Israel feels exposed to the military threat from external forces today more than at any time since Egypt and Syria launched the Yom Kippur War in 1973. But this exposure to threat now has a nuclear barb attached to it, courtesy of Iran’s aggressive pursuit of nuclear power.
What is most worrying to sensible observers of Middle East tensions is the convergence of the projected timing for another Middle East conflict as predicted by King Abdullah of Jordan, and the projected timing for Iran to achieve nuclear power status. Both predictions converge in 2010!
The amazing thing is just how inured the masses have become to this nuclear sword of Damocles hanging over their heads. While the public remain distracted by the confusion of this moment in history that they are living through—the effects of the global economic and financial crisis on their everyday lives, the politicizing of moral issues such as abortion versus the right to life, the effort to legitimize homosexual relationships, the effort to kowtow to minority self-interest groups, periodic record-breaking fraud, record corporate failures, unheard-of extremes of weather—the gravest crisis of all is largely ignored by press, politicians and pundits. It is left to a few sane and sensible observers to occasionally remind us that the risk of the whole planet being blown sky high, triggered by just one act of nuclear terror, has become the gravest of risks to humanity that outweighs all others.
What remains largely unrecognized by most is that Bible prophecy declares indeed that the unthinkable will happen!
“Just WHY is the world in such turmoil? Why are we nearing the very end of this world? The world does not understand. The world’s leaders do not understand. They are bewildered. They know well the world stands poised for the nuclear war that could annihilate all human life from the Earth. And they don’t know how to stop the nuclear buildup or prevent such an unthinkable end to all human life.”
That dramatic statement was made fully 25 years ago by Herbert W. Armstrong, founding editor of the widely read Plain Truth magazine, in a letter to those who supported his worldwide work (June 15, 1984). It reflects the essence of the message that he preached and published over a rich and fulfilling lifetime of service to the global community from that magazine’s inception in 1934 to his death on Jan. 16, 1986. Mr. Armstrong was mentor to those who now produce this magazine, the PhiladelphiaTrumpet.
Now, a quarter of a century on from Herbert Armstrong warning that nuclear weaponry would inevitably be used, resulting in horrific devastation around the globe, one of the very few remaining legitimate journalists, Arnoud de Borchgrave, an octogenarian who plies his trade as a genuine seeker after truth, declares that the experts’ main worry is the threat of nuclear terrorism.
As Herbert Armstrong was wont to so often say, “It’s time we WAKE UP!” Yes, wake up to the reality of this most extreme and ever present threat of mass death by nuclear explosion. It is a threat made ever more present by the very real prospect of some rogue terrorist group, or, for that matter, a crazed national leader such as we even presently see leading at least one nuclear power in Asia today, pushing the button that will produce a domino effect of global destruction vastly exceeding anything mankind has ever experienced or ever imagined!
Jesus Christ prophesied of these very times that we have entered in the following terms: “For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved” (Matthew 24:21-22).
Do you believe the words of your Maker? Do you truly understand their prophetic application to the days we are living through, right now, when, as Arnaud de Borchgrave declared, “Nuclear terrorism, unthinkable during the Cold War, is now the most immediate fear of the experts”?
The outcome of such an unthinkable action is one the average mind does not want to think about. It is certainly one upon which the press and mass media do not want to dwell. Yet it is one that keeps the most serious of thinkers on foreign policy awake at night. In reality, it is one that ought to drive man to his knees in supplicating prayer before his Maker, deep repentant of the actions that have brought humankind to the brink of the unthinkable.
The Bible prophecies indicate that this world has reached the point where those nations that once worshipped the true God of Israel are beyond the reach of genuine national repentance for their collective sins. Yet Bible prophecy does indicate that there is a very brief window of time remaining for the genuine, heartfelt repentance of those individuals who are willing to turn to God and repent of personal sin—those having a genuine desire to serve their Creator in working to prepare for the only remaining hope for mankind’s survival, the coming of the Savior of all humankind to establish a global kingdom of peace and security for a thousand years!
TEL AVIV – President Obama's "learning curve" regarding his policies toward Iran might buy Tehran enough time to produce nuclear weapons, Shabtai Shavit, former chief of the Mossad intelligence agency, warned in an exclusive WND interview today.
"I do know that Obama is taking a very long learning curve experience in order to reach a conclusion about whether his thinking of diplomacy with Iran was right or wrong. I am really worried there will be a heavy price for us," Shavit said.
"Until Obama is convinced personally that his policies may not work and until he has undergone the whole experience, it may be too late," said Shavit.
Shavit served as director of the Mossad from 1989 through 1996.
Shavit spoke two days after the reelection of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, whom the former Mossad chief referred to as "the most evil candidate."
"(Candidate) Mir Hossein Mousavi comes from the same school of thought as Ahmadinejad, but people perceive him as much more moderate, someone who is ready to introduce reforms into the system," Shavit said. "Ahmadinejad ran on a purely evil platform."
Shavit told WND that if Obama is intent on pursuing talks, the diplomatic road to halting Iran's nuclear program runs through Russia. Moscow has been cooperating with Tehran militarily and reportedly is supplying Iran with some of the infrastructure used to build the country's nuclear facilities.
The former intelligence official believes, however, that Russia is talking out of both sides of its mouth.
"Consider the contradiction," noted Shavit. "One the one hand, Russia and the U.S. are ready to start negotiations on a strategy of reducing nuclear capability on both sides and also with the rest of the nuclear powers in the world. On the other hand, Russia continues to supply Tehran the tools it needs to further Iran's nuclear ambitions."
Enraged Palestinians weigh return to terror for Netanyahu speech
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report
June 15, 2009, 2:38 PM (GMT+02:00)
Palestinian "special forces"
Senior Palestinian officials in Ramallah, enraged by the Israeli prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu's conditional offer of a Palestinian state Sunday, June 14 - and even more by what they see as US president Barack Obama's perfidious welcome - are weighing extreme options for reprisal, DEBKAfile's military sources report.
Advisers of Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmud Abbas blame him for falling for a phony clash between Washington and Jerusalem, when all the time Obama and Binyamin were scheming together to devise a formula for trapping the Palestinians into discussing a statehood bereft of military and political power.
Netanyahu's acceptance of a Palestinian state hedged in with conditions the Palestinians would never contemplate has had the effect of placing the onus of rejection at their door.
More and more Palestinian politicians in Ramallah argue that because the Israeli prime minister placed new obstacles on the road to the Middle East peace process, they are entitled to revert to the late Yasser Arafat's two-stage tactics of synchronized terror and diplomacy. This would mean resuscitating the Fatah's al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades and Tanzim terrorist organizations because, they say, Abbas would be ill-advised to engage in peace talks with Israel unarmed with the Palestinians' primary tool of pressure, terror.
Some even argue that Abbas' Fatah, by going back to violence, would force the US president to accept that they will never give up any of their principles, i.e. Israel's total withdrawal to pre-1967 borders, a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem its capital and the right of 1948 refugees to return to their homes.
They also want to telegraph Obama that the Palestinian Fatah is not totally dependent on the military aid and training provided Palestinian Authority security forces by US, British and Canadian military experts, but have their own independent "military" resources.
This would also be the Palestinian rejoinder to Israeli prime minister's demand for a demilitarized state.
Fatah's resort to terrorist tactics would, in the view of some Palestinian officials, heal the internecine quarrel with the radical Hamas and help the Palestinians present a united front not only to America and Israel but also to Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
As for Netanyahu's demand for recognition of Israel as a Jewish state, Palestinian spokesmen said that never in a thousand years would any Palestinian comply. Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak supported this assertion when he accused Netanyahu Monday, June 15, of "scuppering" the Middle East peace process because "no one will support this in Egypt or anywhere else."
Israeli military circles are reported by DEBKAfile to be acutely troubled that Mahmoud Abbas may be tempted to accept the advice of his aides. This would mean a revival of the deadly format Arafat devised for PA security forces' members, to act as serving officers a few hours a day and as terror activists the rest of the time. Their new American training and weaponry would certainly enhance their performance in their second capacity.
