Range Evaluation: Ruger SP101 w/3 1/16" Barrel

Revolvers continue to be popular in the age of the autoloader and one that seems to garner good reports far and wide is the Ruger SP101. It is currently offered in .22, .32 Magnum, .38 Special, as well as .357 Magnum. Barrel lengths run from 2 1/4" to 4" and the revolver is available with fixed or adjustable sights. The one I purchased was in .357 Magnum with the 3 1/16" barrel and fixed sights.

The .357 Magnum chambering is probably the most common and I suspect that it is sold more often than not in the 2 1/4" barrel length with fixed sights. Of course, .38 Specials can be fired in the .357 guns. These little magnums are five-shooters rather than six and the swing-out cylinder is used. As the gun comes from the factory, stocks are of rubber with plastic inserts snapped in and retained by the grip screw.

The SP101 is a bit smaller than the S&W K-frame but beefier than the same company's compact J-frame, some models of which can be had in .357 Magnum.

Safety: Internal transfer bar allows for firing only when the trigger is pressed all the way rearward. The revolver is safe to carry fully loaded.

Here is the Ruger SP101 compared to the 3" S&W K-frame Model 65 LadySmith. Both are chambered in .357 Magnum. The slightly larger K-frame holds 6 shots while the Ruger holds 5. Both of these revolvers have shrouded barrels that surround the ejector rods. This S&W is about 5" tall. Its cylinder width is 1.47" compared to the Ruger's 1.349", but this adds enough to allow for a sixth round. The J-frame cylinder width measures 1.34" across.

The table shows that the SP101 might be thought of as a J-frame on steroids, a compact revolver that has been beefed up in critical areas. Note also that the forcing cone on the SP101 is equivalent to that on the K-frame rather than the J.

Having been in constant production in .357 for over a decade now, complaints on the SP101 being fragile have been few and far between. Why is this? The K-frame from S&W has been associated with some parts breakage when a constant diet of magnums have been used, but the K-frame is a bit larger than the SP101. That means there is more steel around the .357's SAAMI-rated 35K CUP pressure limit each time a round is fired. What's the deal here? SP101's are regularly described as being "built like a bank vault" and praised for their ability to digest huge amounts of full-power magnum ammunition.

The SP101 is a compact revolver, but its forcing cone is very similar to that of the mid-size S&W K-frame guns.

I think the answer is two-fold. It has been my observation that most .357 factory ammunition is simply not loaded as hot as it was a few decades ago. Years ago it was not uncommon to honestly break 1450 ft/sec with various makers' 125-gr. magnum loads from 4" barrels. Now, chronographed velocities are closer to 100 ft/sec slower. Since the hot 125-gr seemed the culprit in most cracked forcing cones and flame cutting, this slight reduction in muzzle velocity probably alleviated the problem. Combine with that the reduction in size of .357 Magnum revolvers in recent times. These guns are certainly easier to carry concealed than the K, L, and N-frames of years past, but one pays for it in increased felt recoil. I strongly suspect that most owners of the compact magnum revolvers shoot a few full-power loads through them, but do the bulk of their practice with the considerably milder .38 Special. I believe that this includes SP101 shooters, but they are shooting a gun is probably a bit more rugged than the J-frame. Hence, we get the comments on the Ruger's durability. I am neither a gunsmith nor a mechanical engineer so I cannot honestly say whether the internal parts on the Ruger are stronger than the S&W, or give bold statements on which system is better. It does appear that both work quite well, but there seems to be fewer complaints of the small Ruger having problems than the small S&W when either is heavily used.

There is an area where the S&W usually beats the Ruger: trigger pull and smoothness of action. I believe that S&W is almost always the winner here. Using full-power springs in the SP101 compared to the S&W will almost always result in a noticeably smoother action in the latter. Both the Ruger and the S&W use coiled springs to power their hammers. The SP101 spring is rated at 14 pounds, the S&W at 8.5. The trigger return spring on the SP comes in at 10 pounds while the rebound spring on the S&W is 18 pounds at factory standard. It seems like the Ruger should have the lighter smoother trigger pull, but such is usually not the case. Some folks reduce the trigger return spring a bit to smooth up the Ruger, but if a person opts to do this, make absolutely sure that the trigger doesn't have a sluggish return for the next shot.

I suspect that S&W perfected the double-action pull many years ago and that we'd have to look long and hard to find better ones on out of the box guns. That does not mean that the RUGER SP101 necessarily has a terrible trigger pull or that they cannot be smoothed up very nicely for they certainly can.

The trigger pull on the SP101 used in this evaluation was smooth, but stiff, and certainly nothing special. It has proven imminently useable however. As it came from the box, it did have sharp edges. These were taken care of using 400-grit sandpaper and a little elbow grease. Others have commented on similar experiences and applied similar corrections. Total time spent was less than 15 minutes. Other than that slight "modification", the SP101 used was as it came from the box.

Shooting: I fired the SP101 at 7 and 15 yards. The revolver was fired in double-action at a combat-type target at the closer distance. At 15 yards, the revolver was fired single-action and from a sitting position with wrists braced. Unfortunately, I only had two types of .357 Magnum ammunition available so I included quite an array of .38 Special also.

(Note: The 115-gr. 38 Special +P+ and standard pressure 110-gr. DPX from Corbon have been discontinued. The 115-gr. is no longer produced and the standard pressure 38 DPX has gone to a +P version.)

The chronograph data is based on 10 shots fired approximately 10' from the chronograph screens.

The SP101 used for testing had fixed sights. Nothing fancy to be sure, but they worked fine and provided a very usable sight picture.

The rear sight notch is very similar to those of other makers' fixed sight revolvers. The serrated ramp front sight was easy to see in both slow and rapid-fire. It is not likely to snag should the revolver be drawn from concealment.

15 Yards:

The 130-gr. Remington 38 Special load was exceptionally easy to control from the SP101. These grouped about an inch below POA at 15 yards.

Remington's 158-gr. LSWCHP +P is a favored load in .38 Special. It hit slightly below the POA from the SP101. It was distinctly easy to handle in this revolver.

The Remington reduced power 125-gr. Golden Saber in .357 Magnum was easy to control and hit POA almost exactly at 15 yards.

The 357 Winchester Silvertip was exactly dead on at 15 yards from this revolver. For me, it was right on the edge of controllability in rapid-fire and especially when shooting with but one hand, but it grouped well and to POA in this slow-fire group.

This target was fired upon using Remington 125-gr. Golden Sabers and Winchester 145-gr. STHP ammunition. A two-hand hold was employed and firing was done at 7 yards. Shots were fired as quickly as a flash sight picture could be obtained. Though the resulting groups appear quite similar in size, the Remington was distinctly easier to handle; more so than the slight differences in velocities and bullet weights might lead one to believe. On paper, the differences appear pretty slim. In the hand, there is definitely a substantial difference.

Observations: Neither the double or single-action trigger pulls on my SP101 as smooth or light as on my J or K-frame S&W revolvers. It is slightly heavier but has smoothed up a bit after roughly 400 shots, about half of which were .357 Magnum handloads and factory ammunition. The gun does appear to have its fixed sights regulated toward the heavier end of the .357 bullet spectrum although POI was perfectly satisfactory at 15 yards with the slightly attenuated Remington Golden Saber load.

The 145-gr. Silvertip was right on the edge of becoming uncontrollable in rapid-fire when using two hands. Using one hand, as might occur in a defense scenario, it was not at all easy to handle. For that reason, I will be using the Remington 125-gr. Golden Saber in this gun for now. Other potential defensive .357 ammunition will be looked at as time permits, but the Golden Saber is it for now.

I found the revolver more comfortable than expected when firing magnum rounds. No doubt the heavy barrel and its shroud putting more weight up front to reduce muzzle flip were factors, but I think there's also much to be said for the grips on this revolver. I found them extremely comfortable and have no plans to replace them.

There were no malfunctions of any kind. Primer strikes were plenty reliable and well centered.
Case ejection was positive and there were no incidents of "sticking" cases.

As can be seen in the upper left photograph, the SP101 has a heavy barrel and the long shroud helps reduce muzzle flip. Seen at the right are 5 fired 38 Special cases with the ejector pushed all the way rearward. They lack a tiny fraction of an inch ejecting and falling free. To eject either fired 38 or 357 hulls, one must depress the ejector rod briskly. It sounds harder than it actually is and there were no problems in doing this with 100% reliability.

I find the SP101 a little gem. It might be a bit of a "diamond in the rough," but not by much. I will use this revolver and report back any problems that might crop up. Frankly, I expect none from what I've read and now, seen.

Some will opine that 5 shots are not enough for a serious defense arm. I suggest that it depends on the type scenario envisioned. I believe that for me, it is adequate in my now tame orbits. I no longer am involved in police service and my days of kicking in a door to a room full of crack heads are long over. That said, if you do not feel comfortable with but five rounds before a reload, the SP101 might not be your best choice as a primary defense gun. A nice fact is that the SP101 uses the same speed loaders as the J-frame S&W revolvers. A fellow could have the SP101 on his belt and an Airweight J-frame in a pocket holster and use the same speed loader(s) for both. (Obviously, the speed loader would contain 38 Special ammo if the pocket gun were so chambered.)

Some complain about a handgun of this weight for carry. I agree that it is heavier than many revolvers intended for concealed carry. I also find it too large for pocket use, but as a compact belt gun, it is just fine and carries comfortably. Its weight is appreciated when firing magnum ammunition.

Frankly, I cannot see limiting this revolver to "just" self-protection. Though its stainless steel construction makes it heavier than various lighter framed revolvers, that emphatically does not mean that these are hard to tote. Given a proper belt and decent holster, just the opposite has proven true for me. I think they would be a heck of a fine sidearm for hiking, camping, fishing, or just knocking about in the woods.

The gun has no removable side plate. The gun is easily disassembled for cleaning via very good instructions provided in Ruger's paperwork accompanying the revolver. Some suggest that the frame is stronger as it has no removable side plate as do S&W revolvers. I don't know if that's true or not, but do think that these are tough little guns that should easily last a lifetime, even with regular use over the long term. The barrel's bore cleaned about as easily as a Smith so I assume smoothness is similar.

The Ruger SP101 uses the same speed loaders as the J-frame S&W revolvers.

For its size and price, I think the SP101 offers a very trustworthy companion whether camping under the stars or walking in an urban jungle. This is a revolver that can stand lots of practice and range time and still keep ticking. You will find no key locks on this revolver.

Though I am not about to divest myself of S&W revolvers, neither am I going to ignore Ruger wheelguns. They have a lot going for them and I remain very favorably impressed with this example.

Range Evaluation: Ruger GP100 w/3" Barrel

After several months of trying to find a clean S&W Model 65 at the right price, I found a GP100 (Catalog Number KGPF-330) at a sale price and had my dealer order one. This is the 3" barrel w/short shroud. It has fixed sights.

The Gun: The GP100 in this configuration weights in at 35 oz. and has an overall length of 8 3/8". The black front sight is a serrated ramp that is pinned to the heavy barrel. Rifling is 5-groove, right hand, and at a twist of 1:18.75". Grips are rubber with rosewood inserts. Finish is a "decent" polish on the side and the top of the barrel has a slight grooved rib. The trigger face is smooth and polished. The fluted cylinder rotates counterclockwise and holds the traditional 6 shots. It swings out to the gun's left ala S&W and ejects fired cases via an ejector star that lifts when the spring-loaded ejector rod is pressed rearward.

Case rims can be seen when the GP100 is loaded. Not the smallest grip, the short GP100 grip is compact enough for concealment and still offers very good purchase. I have large hands and found it extremely comfortable with full-house loads. Note that the cylinder release is pushed inward, not forward as on the Smith & Wesson. Should the owner want to have a spurless hammer, it's obvious that the Ruger's lends itself quite well to such. The yoke or crane is locked to the frame via a spring-loaded tab and seems quite a sturdy setup.

Ammunition Used: Not intended to be a "round up" of every available .357 Magnum load available, this revolver was fired with the following full-house loads: Remington 125-gr. SJHP, Federal 125-gr. JHP, and Winchester 145-gr. STHP. One mid-range .357 load was tried as well: Remington 125-gr. Golden Saber. As more than a few folks buy .357's, but load them with .38's, the following .38 Special ammunition was fired: Magtech 125-gr. +P Guardian Gold JHP, Federal 147-gr. +P+ Hydrashok (Law Enforcement Only Load), and Remington 158-gr. LSWCHP +P. One handload* was used. It consists of a Rucker hard cast SWC loaded over 7.0-gr. Unique in a new Starline case and ignited with a Winchester small pistol primer. This is not a maximum effort load, but one that provides "sufficient" recoil for practicing with .357's and has proven pretty accurate in other revolvers. Velocity is usually around 1100 ft/sec in snub .357 Magnums.

Average velocities, extreme spreads, and standard deviations were obtained from 10-shot strings of fire in which the muzzle was approximately 10' from the chronograph screens.

Shooting: Paper targets were shot at distances of 10, 15, and 25 yards. 5-shot groups were fired single-action standing and using a two-hand hold. The 25-yd. Target was fired seated with wrists supported and also in single-action. 10-yard groups were fired double-action using a two-hand hold.

15 Yards: The first groups of the day were fired at this distance and were fired standing, single-action, and in slow-fire using both hands.

I used a dead-on hold with these targets. In the first group (upper left), I pulled one shot and it is so noted on the target. Each group consists of 5 shots.

25 Yards: One group was fired at this distance. A rest was used and I was seated while shooting. Each shot was fired single-action and in slow-fire.

Noting that the CSWC handload struck a bit higher at 15 yards than the full-house .357 125-gr. JHP's, I used a 6 O'clock hold at this distance, "sitting" the black bullseye atop the front sight. This worked out about right.

10 Yards: As revolvers with this length barrel are often associated with self-defense scenarios (as well as just being darned handy when in the woods), I fired double-action as quickly as I could get a sight picture. I was standing and using both hands.

Remington .357 125-gr. SJHP ammo was fired as quickly as I could obtain a sight picture for a total of 18 rounds or 3 full cylinders for the chest hits. 5 more shots were fired at the head in double-action after reloading. The gun heated up nicely and continued to work perfectly. The full-house magnum load was used to see how the revolver handled at speed with the harder recoiling loads.

Observations: When using a new fixed sight handgun, revolver or automatic, I'm always anxious to see if the sights are properly regulated at the distances I'm likely to use that particular handgun. I was pleased to note that the Ruger was, but was disappointed that at distances greater than probably about 20 yards, a 6 o'clock hold will likely be needed for bullets heavier than 125-grains at velocities similar to those obtained today. As this revolver was obviously intended not for longer distances, but for up "close and personal", that's not really much of a flaw. At distances of 50 to 65 yards, bouncing sticks did required the lower hold with the cast SWC handload and the 145-gr. Silvertips, but the faster 125-gr. magnums were pretty well on and the targets were hit most of the time. When they were not, it was not the gun's fault, but mine.

While I continue to prefer S&W revolvers, I think that this one has found a home. Slightly larger than the K-frame S&W Model 65 that it's pitch-hitting for, its felt recoil is similar to that of the S&W L-frame revolver having a 2 1/2" barrel. I guess this is not surprising as they both weigh in at about 35-oz, though the S&W is about a half-inch shorter LOA.

I do like the sight picture produced by this revolver's serrated black ramp front sight in conjunction with the rear notch. In fact, I prefer this gun's to that of the fixed sight S&W Model 65.

The front sight contributes to a clean, crisp sight picture and one I found more than adequate.

Here you can see the rear sight notch, but it's not evident how good this sight picture is. This "goodness" is subjective, but does remain a strong point for this revolver for me.

I liked the smooth, polished trigger face and found the double-action very usable as the revolver came from the box. It was not as constant as is that of the S&W, but neither was it "bad." I found it no problem and suspect that a trigger job would make it extremely easy to use well.

The double-action trigger pull was quite good, but not so smooth as the Smith & Wesson's. It did seem lighter, but I cannot prove that, as I didn't have a trigger-pull gauge. The single-action pull was not as good as the S&W. It did not break quite as cleanly as I'd have liked and was a bit heavier than what I'm used to. Were I going to shoot this gun primarily single-action, I'd definitely have a trigger job done and very well may do that anyway; the gun is that good in my opinion.

Not as elegant as some grips, these were very easy to handle in rapid-fire with full-house magnums and I found them comfortable. I have no plans to replace them.

Recoil was milder than expected with this revolver and the heavy barrel and shroud evidently dampened muzzle flip. In other words, this stout little thing handled the .357's tried easily with regard to felt recoil and control. Were I using this gun for serious purposes, it would be loaded with something in the 140 to 158-grain range if full magnums were being used. If recoil levels were too high with such loads, I'd just drop on down to the Remington 158-gr. LSWCHP +P and call it good. The gun is a "cream puff" with them and most inexperienced shooters shouldn't have a problem with them at all.

This revolver has the earmarks of being tough as nails and one that can handle quite a lot of shooting with the "real deal" and not reduced loads. I believe that as it comes from the factory it is a very decent self-defense revolver and can be made an excellent one with trigger work and perhaps lightly chamfering the cylinder chambers for quicker reloads. That it disassembles so easily for cleaning rates highly with me as well.

Nearly, but not quite! Slowly depressing the extractor rod will not separate the fired cases from the gun! The rod must be depressed briskly to do this. (I don't know if the 3" barrel guns having the longer shroud have a slightly longer extractor rod or not.) That said, extraction was always smooth with zero sticking. Cases showed no signs of swelling unduly near the rims.

As can be seen, the primer is struck adequately and pretty well in the center. There were no light primer strikes. The Ruger's firing pin is frame-mounted with a transfer bar raising between it and the hammer when the trigger's pulled rearward to fire the gun. The system worked fine in my limited experience and seems to have been well proven based on the popularity of the GP revolvers.

In my eyes, the GP100 is not so elegant and beautiful as the Smith & Wesson's lines, but neither is it ugly. It is businesslike and appears tough as nails.

The 3" GP100 would make a fine house or car gun and could be used for serious concealed carry with a good gun belt and holster. I think it would be fine for camping, hiking, as well as just tagging along when hunting.

As I've used the gun more and more, I've become more fond of it despite Ruger's spare parts policy that can be problematic. The company frequently will not sell replacement parts to an individual nor even a gunsmith, forcing the owner to ship a broken or defective gun back to the company. It's a liability thing to protect the company and while understandable, one that doesn't make me very happy. Hopefully, that will change.

If you happy to be looking for a .357 in a medium size that's reliable, accurate, tough, easy to clean and disassemble, shoots straight, doesn't have an integral lock, and doesn't cost an arm and a leg, you might consider the GP100. I think this shorter shroud version's been discontinued with only the full shroud versions being produced, but short versions can still be found, I'd suspect.

These are darned good revolvers.

A Critical Look at the Glock 17

Not the first polymer frame pistol made, this is the one that started the "revolution" to "plastic pistols". That they are popular is an understatement. In the early '80's the Austrian army adopted this new handgun design and soon hit the US market in a big way with the establishment of Glock, Inc, in Smyrna, GA, in '85. Since then it has remained a most popular defensive handgun in this country and fills more than a few police holsters. The largest US police agency I can think of that issues Glock handguns would be NYPD.

Traditionalists such as myself were shocked and viewed this new "thing" with a jaundiced eye. It didn't look "right"; plastic in a handgun? How could it last? Would it be safe? "Oh, this will never work or catch on," I thought.

Simply put, I was wrong.

Even among folks favoring steel and wood in handguns, some find a role for the Glock in one model or the other. I fall into this category though I freely admit I do not subscribe to the theory of "Glock Perfection" as espoused by the company. Like any other handgun, the Glock has both good and not so good points.

Glock handguns have gone through several changes since the first versions arrived on the scene and this includes their first model, the G17. The one used for this report is a current one and is factory stock; nothing has been altered.

Barrel: 4.49" with 1:10" twist (Actually, most of the European pistols described as having 1:10 are actually 1:9.84".) It is polygonal rifled. Glock calls it "hexagonal".

Action: The Glock uses a locked breech and uses what is called a "safe action". The pistol does not have a hammer. It uses a spring-loaded striker and is partially retracted when a round is chambered. Pressing the trigger fully retracts and releases the striker so the pistol can be thought of as a form of double-action-only.

External Safety: Yes, on the trigger itself. Newer versions have an extractor with an elevated flat that is obvious visually and by feel when there is a cartridge in the chamber.

In the picture on the left we see the trigger position when the pistol does not have a round in the chamber. On the right there is. Note the difference in position. Though the Glock can be thought of as a DAO, the trigger pull is only about a half-inch. The factory rates it at about 5 1/2 pounds as it comes from the box. Note the fixed sights. They are made of plastic and are the familiar 3-dot variety. The front grip strap has finger grooves with checkering between and an accessory rail is visible molded in the dust cover. There have been changes to various parts within the pistol over the years as well. The Glock 17 is the first Glock pistol but 9mm versions both larger and smaller are now made.

Here you can see the raised flat on the external pivoting extractor. There is a round chambered and the extractor acts as a loaded chamber indicator. It is also easily felt in the dark. On the right we see that the extractor gets a very healthy "bite" on the 9mm case rim. The cylinder visible at the lower left below the cartridge is what blocks the striker until the trigger is pressed and it is pushed up and out of the way.

Shooting: This pistol was shot over the chronograph to provide a rather extensive list of actual 9mm velocities ranging for 9mm loads with bullets from 65 to 147 grains. Average velocities are based on 10 shots fired approximately 10 feet from the chronograph screens. Average velocities, extreme spreads, and standard deviations are in ft/sec.

The fastest round fired was the standard pressure Aguila IQ but it also had the greatest extreme spread and standard deviation. In standard velocity loads, Remington UMC 115-gr. FMJ, Winchester USA 115-gr. JHP, Federal 115-gr. JHP were exceptionally consistent in this weight range. In the 124-gr. range, CCI/Blazer, CCI/Speer Gold Dot, and Federal HydraShok lead the way, but not by much in some cases.

In +P and +P+, Corbon 115-gr. JHP +P was scarily consistent as is Winchester RA9TA +P+ in 127-gr. The now discontinued Corbon +P 124 gr. Gold Dot load was right in there and their current 125-gr. replacement (Sierra Power Jacket Hollow Point) is as well.

None of the 147-grain loads showed any significant differences in consistency shot to shot.

Shooting groups was limited today. I only got to fire at 15 yards due to heavy winds and an influx of people showing up unexpectedly. The groups that were shot are fairly typical of what I've seen in the past with Glock 17 handguns.

The group on the left consisted of 10 shots of Sellier & Bellot 115-gr. FMJ while the one on the right is but 5 shots with Corbon's DPX +P in the same weight. The two high hits with the S&B are not from "first round flyer syndrome" but from me. Recent lots of S&B (2005) are reportedly coming with extremely hard primers that are not always detonated by Glocks and other handguns. Though this lot had no problems, I have seen this in the past with S&B and suggest that it not be carried for "serious" purposes.

There were no failures or malfunctions of any kind in today's shooting session. This is pretty much typical of Glock handguns and I suggest this is a major reason for their popularity. Ejection was positive and cases fell pretty much in the same area with cases from lighter loads landing about 5' to the right and hotter loads, a bit farther. Feeding was slick and w/o hesitation with all bullet shapes from traditional ball to truncated cone and very blunt and short JHP's.

In past shooting sessions when using the Glock 17 and 19, I experienced no accuracy problems out to about 25 yards or so. At 50 yards, I do not get quite as tight of groups with the Glock as with other handguns such as the Browning Hi Power or various 1911 pattern pistols. I do not know if this is due to mechanical accuracy potential of the Glock pistols or me and I have not tried this with the longer versions of the gun. If I can get a group of 5 or 6" with a 1911 at 50 yards from a rest, I can expect a group roughly 2 to 3" greater with the Glock. I suspect the problem is me as groups at 15 and 25 yards are distinctly comparable to those fired from other quality autos.

Those shooting copious amounts of +P ammunition will be happy to know that the Glock 17 handles these with ease. G17's are tough guns and reports of extremely high round counts with zero problems are plentiful. I know one officer who shoots his first-version Glock 17 heavily and has done so since the '80's when he bought it. He has had no problems or major parts breakage. If memory serves correctly, he replaced a broken trigger return spring. Before retiring from police service I saw lots of handguns on the firing range and did see a few broken Glocks. Usually the problem was either a broken trigger return spring or slide stop spring. (Glock suggests that the slide be released via the "slingshot" method rather than depressing the slide stop lever to avoid wearing this stamped metal part. The gun will continue to work, but it is possible to wear the catch such that it no longer holds the slide rearward when the last shot is fired.)

Here we see the cracked breech face of a Glock 19 that was fired less than 100 times with only factory ball ammunition. Glock replaced this gun free, but it serves as a reminder that nothing is perfect and that lemons can come from any manufacturer. (The replacement Glock 19 has been fired steadily with no problems whatsoever.)

Like any other make handgun, Glocks have their downside issues. "Kabooms" are one. This is a term referring to catastrophic case failure when the gun is fired. Though it has happened in 9mm, the primary caliber these events stem from seem to be .40 S&W. While it may be exaggerated, the KB's have occurred more than a few times, but I don't think all of this can be laid at Glock's doorstep. I personally witnessed two KB's with Glock 22's using Federal 180-gr. HydraShok factory ammunition. This occurred early in the ammunition's manufacture and has long since been corrected. It is true that in some calibers, Glock handguns don't provide any excess of case support, but in the original caliber, 9mm, they do fine.

Glock nixes the use of cast bullets in their pistols due to the hexagonal rifling, which leads badly with some alloys and can raise pressures. When pressures exceed a certain point the weakest link in the chain breaks and this is usually the unsupported case head. I have seen badly bulged cases firing standard pressure ammunition in .40, .45 and 10mm Glocks, but have not seen it in 9mm. In the case of the 10mm, Glock replaced the barrel and the bulged case problem was alleviated.

I have shot cast bullet handloads in Glock handguns, but never more than a couple of hundred before cleaning the barrel. Though I did not notice excessive leading this does not mean that it couldn't happen rapidly; lead alloys from cast bullet makers varies. For the record I suggest shooting only jacketed ammunition in any Glock handgun, regardless of caliber.

Felt recoil was minimal with the G17. The warmer loads kicked a bit more and were "sharper" but nothing was either "bad" or hard to control. I suspect strongly that this is one reason for the 9mm's continued popularity. You get quite a bit of "oomph" for minimal recoil in a service size handgun.

The rear tang of the Glock 17 is wider than the slide and spreads the recoil impulse which results in less felt recoil for most people.

Observations and Conclusion: For me the Glock 17 feels better than any other 9mm offered by this company. For many that accolade goes to the Glock 19, but those have never felt comfortable to me. This is entirely subjective and there is no right or wrong answer; it's up to the individual.

Glock 17's have a well-deserved reputation for general ruggedness and utter reliability. Though they can be made to malfunction by limp-wristing, they normally run 100% with about any type of ammunition they're fed.

For those going into harm's way with the expectation that cleaning will not be regular and the elements harsh, the Glock has one of the most corrosion resistant finishes extant. Certainly the polymer frame won't corrode, but the steel parts are covered with tennifer, a Glock finish that is for all practical purposes rust proof.

To me, the primary weak point remains the factory sights. They are polymer and easily damaged. While it is true that they're very inexpensive and easily replaced, it is somewhat silly to put a set of sights on a pistol that can be worn to a nub in a holster that touches them or that can knocked from the gun w/o much effort. The sights on this Glock are being replaced with steel ones in the near future.

The Glock 17 can be lightly customized without much effort as Glock and other manufacturers offer various guide rods, trigger connectors, sights, springs, etc.

Mine will remain about as it is with the exception of the sights and I'll probably go with Wolff's one-piece steel recoil spring and guide. That said, the polymer guide is holding up fine.

Here is the Glock 17 fieldstripped. The recoil spring guide rod is polymer but so far, no problems. The recoil spring is a captive unit, which makes replacement require a new guide rod if one wishes to remain in factory trim. The Wolff one-piece steel guide rod requires the use of the Wolff spring and is not captive. Changing the recoil spring is simplified, but it is not as easy to install this spring and guide as is the factory unit.

Glock handguns are not so internally complex as some more modern automatics. In this picture we can see the ejector. These are bent and this is normal and the way they come from the factory. Yours should be the same and there's nothing wrong with your gun; it is supposed to be that way.

Cleaning the G17 is easy compared to some other automatics I shoot. These pistols require but a minor amount of lubrication for proper function. Take down is simple and cleaning should be a regular part of any shooter's regimen. That said, the Glock series of handguns are usually capable of shooting extreme amounts of ammunition before cleaning is necessary. I clean mine after each range session whether it is "necessary" or not. Do NOT get oil or solvent into the striker channel. This can caramelize and/or attract grit that can weaken the striker's ability to detonate primers. Keep this area clean. The hole on the underside of the slide is not there to allow us to lube this area. Speaking of primers, I suggest using only quality American-made ammo in this pistol if possible. Reliable though it is, there are some makes of ammunition having hard primers that the Glock's striker system simply does not fire with 100% reliability. In most cases this turns out to be foreign surplus ammo. I have never seen a Glock pistol in any caliber fail to fire any brand of US ammunition.

The Glock 17 is a capable, dependable pistol whether for home defense, concealed carry, or uniformed law enforcement work. Mine will be used primarily for the first two categories as well as for range shooting for fun and practice. These pistols are not forgiving. It is absolutely essential that the finger not be on the trigger until ready to fire. While this is true of all handguns, it must be remembered that the one and only external safety on the Glock is deactivated when the trigger is touched from the front. Holster selection should also be made with an eye to retaining straps and thumb breaks. They must not be able to enter the trigger guard and touch the trigger. If they do, the pistol could discharge when inserted back into the holster.

Not so beautiful to my eye as a number of other handguns, I do find the Glocks reliable and worthy of respect as defensive handguns. Light, easy to carry, and essentially corrosion-free, they possess traits high on the list for daily carry and under less than ideal conditions. They can take lots and lots of shooting and with hot ammunition, too. A serious shooter can buy a Glock 17 and go hundreds of thousands of rounds without worry. The barrels are very long-lived and there are usually no catastrophic parts failures. One might break a spring now and again but those concerned can go with the "New York" trigger springs, which supposedly alleviate this problem. (They will change both the trigger pull weight and feel.)

Not likely to replace the Hi Power, CZ, or 1911 as my favorite handguns, I do admit that I trust and recommend the Glock as a quality handgun that can be counted upon in the "dark place". Just be aware that it doesn't allow much less-than-careful use without the possibility of a negligent discharge. Negligent or not, these pistols will fire when called upon.
