Using Technology to Cover Incompetence

Way back in the days of yore, I took a few courses in law enforcement (cop school). Somewhere along the way, we were introduced to what's called the "21-foot rule" of street survival. Put simply: if the bad guy has a knife out in view and is less than seven meters away, while the good guy still has his pistol in his holster, then no matter how fast the good guy is at drawing and firing his weapon, the bad guy can run and stab him before a shot is fired. The point of my illustrating this rule is, obviously, that superior technology can be trumped by superior tactics. Puts a different light on the old canard of "bringing a knife to a gunfight," doesn't it?

Now, consider the various strengths of the Israel Defense Forces: tanks, planes, bombs, night-vision, armored personnel carriers, all sorts of expensive and fancy mechanisms, along with the training that goes with them. Superficially, it would seem, most of that stuff didn't work too well in the last conflict. (If you're a soldier, don't worry, you'll have your time in a bit.)

What with the recent missile attacks on northern Israel, we now have an even fancier gadget due to be deployed around several cities - an American-built laser-powered anti-rocket system. It sounds great, is very costly, and no doubt will soothe the nerves of many people who were so upset at the odd explosion in their neighborhoods a few months ago. At least, I hope it soothes them, because they're paying for it.

The only problem with this new light-show machine is that it won't work. Period, end of sentence.

I can hear the bubbling hostility already, and I know all the arguments - technical, military and political. Believe it or not, I say that they are all correct, and in more ways than their proponents may think.

Nevertheless, this system will not work.

Why? Because the entire concept is flawed in one crucial sense: the Arabs made it obsolete on the first day of their rocket launches last July. Superior tactics, my dear, remember?

Let's take the problems one at a time:

First, notice that most of the missile launches were from multiple sites, with many rockets triggered at one time from each launching platform, usually with mechanical timers so that the missile crews would be absent when the rockets fired. Combine this with launching platforms that are emplaced in or near homes, well camouflaged and ready to be deployed by civilian-dressed technicians, and you have virtually no way to stop dozens of missiles being put into the air before even the most modern observation-strike planes can find and destroy them. Only the big, single-missile launchers can be found and taken out this way, and the IAF made yeoman work of doing just that. Unfortunately, it takes troops on the ground to find the rest.

So, this means that any anti-missile system has to anticipate dealing with hundreds of projectiles at one time, with a very good chance of missing some rockets that will continue on to their targets. All the enemy has to do is throw enough rockets in the air to make certain that some get through. Unless you're unlucky and happen to be within the kill-zone when one lands, an occasional bang is not a very effective military weapon; but it only takes one explosion to rattle an entire city's population. Remember Haifa, Netanya, Kiryat Shmona - the videos of those cities' residents boarding buses with just a memento or two in hand?

Secondly, this kind of anti-missile system is unbelievably expensive. That is a severe limit on how many can be developed or bought, and that means that only cities considered a priority to the government will be "protected" by these systems. Everyone else, well, be sure your bomb shelters are up to snuff or have a friend or relative you can bunk with for the duration. That is, if there is any place that is out of rocket range next time.

All this brings us to the final problem, which is the motivation behind buying these light-saber machines. Politics is wonderful and even entertaining, but it should have little to do with the safety of a country's civilian population. Have you thought about what's going on behind closed doors at the cabinet table when these kinds of decisions are made?

Consider: Plans are presented by the Northern Command to push through to the Litani River, thus enabling the IDF to backtrack and clear the southern half of Lebanon of missiles and other enemy emplacements. Not allowed. Special units are called to attack vital supply routes, caches and military headquarters in order to disrupt the Hizbullah chain of command and prevent the kidnapped Israeli soldiers from being taken out of the country. Not allowed. Reserves are called up to free regular army units for combat. Not allowed until too late in the war. Combat units are ordered to take positions for jumping off into Lebanon, but are not allowed to move except in piecemeal fashion, endangering the troops.

I could go on, but I won't, for brevity's sake. The point is that certain decisions were made, and a war that was started by accident was ended by unadulterated incompetence. It left Israel with so many questions about itself and its government that people are now grasping at any solution presented to them, mostly by the very fools who got the country into this situation in the first place.

The facts are that the real solution to the problem of missile attack is not more technology, but rather a tactical one. Go in, find the enemy, kill him, leave no stone unturned. That was what was presented to the cabinet, and it was a short, workable and reasonably cheap method, which would've resulted in less lives lost or disrupted than what actually happened. Alas, they blew it big time.

Now, the politicians are in snake-oil-salesman mode, as if they were trying to put a bandage on a spreading cancer instead of showing that they know the actual cure. I'm not certain if the public completely buys this routine anymore, but I certainly don't. It is time that citizens of Israel see the real wizard behind the Emerald City's curtain for what he is. All the gears and switches and flashing lights don't change the fact that the problem with the machinery is operator-error.

Netanyahu: It's 1938 and Iran is Germany; Ahmadinejad is preparing another Holocaust

LOS ANGELES - Drawing a direct analogy between Iran and Nazi Germany, Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu asserted Monday that the Iranian nuclear program posed a threat not only to Israel, but to the entire western world. There was "still time," however, to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons, he said.

"It's 1938 and Iran is Germany. And Iran is racing to arm itself with atomic bombs," Netanyahu told delegates to the annual United Jewish Communities General Assembly, repeating the line several times, like a chorus, during his address. "Believe him and stop him," the opposition leader said of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. "This is what we must do. Everything else pales before this."

While the Iranian president "denies the Holocaust," Netanyahu said, "he is preparing another Holocaust for the Jewish state."

Speaking on Army Radio on Tuesday, Netanyahu hinted that Israel possesses the military capabilities necessary for curbing by itself the Iranian nuclear threat, declining to specify what these entail.

The Likud chairman said "I don't want to analyze the capability required to eliminate [the Iranian] threat, but this capability exists," when told by host Razi Barkai that Israel lacks the ability to eliminate Tehran's nuclear program by military means.

"This capability is eroded over time, and if we wait years then obviously this capability would not exist anymore ... but right now I disagree with the claim that nothing can be done against Iran," he added.

When asked if Bush could afford embarking on another "military adventure" after Iraq, Netanyahu said acting on the Iranian nuclear program would not be adventurous but necessary.

"... Israel would certainly be the first stop on Iran's tour of destruction, but at the planned production rate of 25 nuclear bombs a year ... [the arsenal] will be directed against 'the big Satan,' the U.S., and the 'moderate Satan,' Europe," Netanyahu said.

"Iran is developing ballistic missiles that would reach America, and now they prepare missiles with an adequate range to cover the whole of Europe," he added.

"No one cared"
Criticizing the international community in his GA speech for not acting more forcefully in trying to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear power - "No one cared then and no one seems to care now," he said, again drawing on the Nazi parallel - Netanyahu warned that Tehran's nuclear and missile program "goes way beyond the destruction of Israel - it is directed to achieve world-wide range. It's a global program in the service of a mad ideology."

Large sections of the international community, he said, also misunderstood the nature of radical Islam and its role in the Mideast conflict. "What happens in Iran affects what happens in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, not the other way round," he said.

Netanyahu said he believed that Iran could still be stopped from acquiring nuclear weapons. "There is still time. All ways must be considered. We can't let this thing happen," he said, but did not outline specific measures he thought should be taken.

Referring to Israel's preemptive strike in the 1967 War, he did say that stopping Iran required "preemptive leadership. Preemption requires will and vision."

"Noone will defend the Jews if the Jews don't defend themselves," he said to loud applause. "Iran's nuclear ambitions have to be stopped."

Picture the ugly scene, if you have the heart and or stomach:

A breaking news bulletin interrupts regular broadcasting during prime time. Television cameras zoom in on the White House where a historic piece of legislation is being about to become law by virtue of approval by President G.W. Bush.

At the center of the stage sits President Bush, smiling broadly at the Democrats and RINOs who made amnesty for illegal aliens possible. That would include Democrat senators Reid and Kennedy, and Republicans Frist and McCain. The U.S. House would be represented by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the Sanchez sisters, and other advocates for illegal aliens.

With a stroke of his presidential pen, G. W. Bush will grant legal status to the 12-20 million illegal alien criminals who have invaded America since 1986, when wholesale amnesty was last granted. Once Bush is finished, former illegal aliens will comprise anywhere from 3-8% of the total United States population.

Nearly all of the “hardworking, goodhearted” illegal aliens that Bush will legalize will vote Democrat for the remainder of their lives, thereby effectively ending the two party system in America.

Mexicans still living in Mexico, but disenchanted with life there, will see the latest amnesty as a sure sign that invading America can be accomplished with impunity. It will be abundantly clear that America’s “conservative” president is adamant in his refusal to enforce U.S. borders and immigration laws.

Thus, scores of millions of additional illegal aliens will head north with little or no concern for U.S. borders and immigration laws.

G.W. Bush will go down in history as the president who actively campaigned for the invasion of America by foreigners from a third-world nation. He will be remembered as the president who discarded American sovereignty, rule of law, language, and culture in exchange for cheap lettuce and fruit.

He will also be remembered as the president who sent American men and women 8,000 miles from home to fight for Iraq and Afghanistan, but who abandoned the American people at our southern border.

Finally, G.W. Bush will be remembered as the president who abandoned the Republican party and consigned it to permanent minority status.

The Russian publication Kommersant has published a newly located photograph of a U.S. hostage-taker in Iran circa 1979 bearing a striking resemblance to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The Iranian leader has steadfastly denied he was involved in the takeover of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran and the holding of 52 Americans for 444 days despite assertions to the contrary of some of those hostages and former Iranian President Abholhassan Bani-Sadr, who says he was a ringleader and the liaison with Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

Charges by the ex-hostages were made shortly after Ahmadinejad came to power June 24, 2005. But from the beginning, the White House and State Department made it clear they would rather not know the truth about Ahmadinejad because it would place the U.S. in a position of refusing to permit a head of government into the country to attend U.N. meetings.


One official said such a finding would "enormously complicate" matters.

U.S. "investigators" never bothered to interview any of the former hostages who made the charges against the Iranian leader.

Perhaps the most damning evidence against Ahmadinejad with regard to the hostage-taking came from Bani-Sadr, Iran's president during the early days of the Khomeini revolution.

He has adamantly affirmed Ahmadinejad was one of the kidnappers who held 52 Americans for 444 days. He said the former student leader was in the embassy throughout the hostage crisis.

"Ayatollah Khomeini's deputy, Ayatollah Khamenei, demanded of him a constant report on what is happening in the embassy," he said.

When told Ahmadinejad denied the accusation, Bani-Sadr laughed.

"What do you want?" he said. "That he should not deny it? I was president, and I know the details, and I am telling you for sure that he was there, though his role was not organizational. He was the chief reporter to Khamenei."

Sadr added that Ahmadinejad initially opposed the hostage-taking but changed his mind once Khomeini gave his support.

At least six former American hostages agree the president of Iran played a key role in interrogating and abusing them.

Chuck Scott characterized his tormentor as "cold, hard-nosed" and said his memory is solid, "as sure as I'm sitting here."

"If you went through a traumatic experience like that and you were around people who made it possible, you're never going to forget them," said Scott, a 73-year-old retired U.S. Army colonel.

Scott said he recognized him almost instantly during the publicity surrounding his election in June, when he shocked the world by winning in an upset.

Former hostage Don Sharer identified Ahmadinejad as a student leader who called Americans "pigs and dogs."

Ahmadinejad acknowledges membership in the radical student organization that stormed the embassy when he was 23.

"He was in the background, like an adviser," recalled Sharer, a former U.S. Navy officer. "He called us pigs and dogs and said we deserved to be locked up forever."

Scott called him "a leader, what I would call a hard-a--. Even the other guards said he was very strict."

"The new president of Iran is a terrorist," said Scott.

Sharer said Ahmadinejad was an interrogator and remembers being personally grilled by him.

"He was involved in interrogating me the day we were taken captive," said former Marine security guard Kevin Hermening. "There is absolutely no reason the United States should be trying to normalize relations with a man who seems intent on trying to force-feed the world with state-sponsored terrorism."

William Daugherty, another former hostage, concurs that Ahmadinejad was there. He claims he saw him eight to 10 times in the first 19 days of captivity before the hostages were separated into smaller groups.

"As soon as I saw the face, it rang a lot of bells to me, and it was a recent picture, but he still looks like a man, take 20 years off of him, he was there. He was there in the background."

David Roeder, the embassy's former deputy Air Force attache, also said Ahmadinejad was present during one of his interrogations.

"It was almost like he was checking on the interrogation techniques they were using in a sort of adviser capacity," Roeder said.

Sharer added: "He was extremely cruel. He is one of the hardliners, so that tells you what their government is going to stand for in the next four to five years."

In addition to Bani-Sadr and the hostages, BBC correspondent John Simpson also recalled seeing Ahmadinejad on the embassy grounds, according to Middle East analyst Daniel Pipes.

Iran Says Nuke Program Is Near Complete

TEHRAN, Iran -- President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Tuesday said Iran would soon celebrate completion of its controversial nuclear fuel program.

"With the wisdom and resistance of the nation, today our position has stabilized. I'm very hopeful that we will be able to hold the big celebration of Iran's full nuclearization in the current year," the hard-line president said referring to the country's nuclear fuel program.

Iran's current calendar year ends on March 20.

The hard-line president also claimed that the international community was caving in to Tehran's demands to continue its nuclear program.

"Initially, they (the U.S. and its allies) were very angry. The reason was clear: They basically wanted to monopolize nuclear power in order to rule the world and impose their will on nations," Ahmadinejad said.

"Today, they have finally agreed to live with a nuclear Iran, with an Iran possessing (the whole) nuclear fuel cycle," he said, without elaborating.

Iran has been locked in a standoff with the West over its nuclear program. The United States and its European allies have been seeking a U.N. Security Council resolution imposing impose sanctions on Tehran for refusing to suspend uranium enrichment.

Russia, which is backed by China, has opposed tough action advocated by the U.S., Britain and France, and its amendments to a Western draft resolution would reduce sanctions and delete language that would cut off Iran's access to foreign missile technology.

The U.S. and some of its allies allege that Iran is developing nuclear weapons and are suspicious of its intentions after Tehran concealed parts of its nuclear development from U.N. inspectors for many years.

But Tehran claims its program is peaceful and for generating electricity.

Uranium enrichment at low levels can be used to produce fuel to generate electricity but at higher levels can be use to make atomic bombs.

Iran has said it will never give up its right under the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty to enrich uranium and produce nuclear fuel. Officials have said they plan to generate 20,000 megawatts of electricity through nuclear energy in the next two decades.

Ahmadinejad said he will soon send a message to the American people in an apparent attempt to influence the U.S. public opinion over President George W. Bush's policy toward Iran.

"We will issue a message to the American people ... many Americans have asked me to talk to them and offer my opinions to them. This message is being drawn up," he said.

In August, Ahmadinejad called for a televised debate with Bush months after he wrote a letter to the U.S. president that Washington said was irrelevant and not addressing the key issue of Iran's disputed nuclear program.

Iran also recently has said it would consider negotiating with the U.S. over Iraq and other regional issues if Washington proposes having talks. But has hinted that it would not drop its refusal to talk about its nuclear program.

Truckers call for boycott of foreign-owned road

Truckers are being called on to boycott a decision by Indiana to lease a highway to foreign investment groups.

Todd Spencer, executive vice president of the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association, OOIDA, has called for truckers to bypass the Indiana Toll Road, which has been leased to a consortium composed of Cintra Concesiones de Infraestructuras de Transport, S.A., a Spanish investment consortium with ties to Juan Carlos and the ruling family of Spain, and the Australian investment firm Macquarie Infrastructure Group.

In an article on the OOIDA website, Spencer argues, "This is a way to send the message that as more and more roads are converted to toll roads the secondary highways get more and more of the traffic. If that's the life they want to live, they ought to be willing to embrace it right now."

Spencer told WND the OOIDA is strongly opposed to converting U.S. freeways to toll roads owned by foreign entities. The group's opposition includes the Trans-Texas Corridor, the four-football-field-wide NAFTA Superhighway parallel to Interstate-35 which Texas Gov. Rick Perry plans to begin next year.

"The Bush administration is bending over backwards to accommodate Mexican trucks coming into the United States," Spencer said. "The whole goal is to get the absolute lowest cost of transportation, without worrying about important safety and security issues using Mexican trucks and Mexican truck drivers creates."

Spencer believes one of those security issues is terrorism.

"Worldwide trucks are the weapons of choice of terrorists," he emphasized.

The Bush administration, Spencer contends, is not taking seriously enough the risk of opening the U.S. to Mexican trucks.

"Who's going to check to see what's really in that truck? Nobody is going to check. That's the problem," he said.

Responding to the Kansas City SmartPort plan to establish a Mexican customs office in Kansas City, Spencer said: "We evidently have a lot of people in the U.S. who have lost their minds."

Spencer stressed that once a Mexican truck crosses the border, there is no real way to control where that truck ultimately goes.

"Just because you have a Trans-Texas Corridor and a Mexican customs office in Kansas City doesn't mean Mexican trucks have to stay on this route," he explained. "There won't be anything meaningful to stop a Mexican truck from going wherever the driver wants, once the truck is across the border."

When asked about enforcing a 20-mile commercial zone limiting where Mexican trucks can go in the U.S., Spencer was dismissive.

"There's never been any 20-mile commercial zone in Texas that the Texas Department of Public Safety enforces," he said. "Once a truck clears the Mexican border with Texas, that truck is free to go wherever the driver wants to go in Texas. The U.S. Department of Transportation's Inspector General's office has conducted numerous investigations which show that Mexican trucks go right on from Texas to other states throughout the U.S.

Spencer stressed that U.S. law enforcement will have no way to enforce U.S. law for Mexican trucks or drivers.

"In Mexico, there's no computer system at all to track commercial drivers," he noted. "If a Mexican commercial driver's license is suspended, there's no way to track it, here or in Mexico."

Spencer pointed out Mexico does not have the same medical requirements for getting a commercial driver's license.

"There are no hours-in-service regulations for commercial drivers in Mexico," he stressed. "There are no drug-testing regulations in Mexico.

The U.S. government says Mexican drivers crossing into the U.S. will have to comply with regulations, but Spencer believes the demand is not practical without a system in place with Mexico to verify enforcement.

"Who is going to do a background check on a Mexican driver?" Spencer asked. "All the Bush administration cares about is working with the international business owners who want the cheapest cost of truck drivers possible."

Spencer believes the tolls planned for the Trans-Texas Corridor amount to a new tax.

"The toll that the Texas Department of Transportation has been suggesting for a truck is 40 cents a mile," Spencer notes. "This is the equivalent of about $2.40 in new fuel taxes. What happened to free-ways? That was the whole point of the interstate highway system. Motorists were to get the benefit of freeways, not new toll roads."

The TTC toll for an automobile will be just over one-quarter of the truck tolls.

"These are tremendous new costs, and the toll revenue will be going to Spain," Spencer said. "The end result will be a drag on the U.S. economy with further damage done to the middle class."

Spencer agrees the Texas Department of Transportation will try to entice trucks to use the TTC by establishing high speed limits, maybe as high as 75 or 80 miles per hour. But he cautioned the state's DOT would force traffic onto the TTC once the highway is built.

He points to the "no compete" clause in the Cintra contract, barring the Texas DOT from making significant upgrades to parallel routes.

"You better believe that highway users will be forced to use the TTC toll roads even if Texas has to close down lanes on existing highways," Spencer said.

He stressed that the only winners to the TTC would be the "investment bankers who get fees up front, just like the politicians get their campaign contributions first, before any toll road is built."

Who will be the losers? The U.S. taxpayer, Spencer contends.

"The Mexican truck drivers will not be paying U.S. income or Social Security taxes, and Mexican trucks won't generally pay U.S. road taxes that U.S. truck drivers pay," he points out.

Spencer said his union sees the TTC as a one-way street.

"Don't expect American drivers will ever want to operate south of the border," he said. "Mexican law still currently prohibits American trucks from entering Mexico. No U.S. trucking company has suggested a desire to send U.S. trucks or drivers into Mexico."

The OOIDA currently has 145,000 members from all 50 states. Owner-operators in the trucking industry are independent small business people who own, maintain and drive commercial trucks they generally own. OOIDA members are typically small business truckers defined as companies operating six or fewer trucks, a segment that comprises close to 90 percent of the motor carrier industry.

winding the springs are then heat treated and stress relieved. The hammer
spring is slightly lighter than the nominal stock spring while the trigger
rebound spring is approximately 11% lighter than the stock spring. Bear in

The two most common assault rifles in the world are the Colt AR-15 (designated the M16 by the United States military) and its variants, and the Avtomat Kalashnikova Model 1947 (AK-47). These two have been compared since the late 1960s as rival models, and so have spawned controversy and comparison.

Influence of World War II

WW2 combat experiences indicated that in the future, the combatant with higher firepower and mobility would be in a better position to successfully attain his goals, which was a shift from the previous doctrine of static wars that favored the defender. Bolt action rifles and revolvers would become obsolete in the face of semiautomatic and fully automatic weapons, and machineguns would become lighter and more mobile. In particular, the German MP40 submachinegun, the Russian SVT-40 self-loading rifle and the German Sturmgewehr 44 assault rifle would revolutionize future infantry weapon designs. Both the USA and the USSR realized the need to adapt their current weaponry to the newly adopted doctrines and tactics, and they took different approaches to the same problem, which resulted in the eventual adoption by both sides of the assault rifle concept.

Origins

The AK-47 design work was completed shortly after World War II, as can be seen by the origin of its model number (47 representing the year in which its design was adopted and given its current designation) and was in service in the Soviet army from the early 1950s, the beginning of the Cold War period. The design was influenced by contemporary and previous weapons like the FG-42, the MP-44 (later renamed Stgw-44) and early Russian attempts to build a lighter, automatic rifle based around the Japanese 6.5 mm Arisaka round, such as the AVS-36 Simonov and the early 1916 Avtomat by Fedorov. The AK-47 was adopted as the standard issue infantry weapon of the Soviet army due to its firepower, ease of use, low production costs, and reliability, which fit the Soviet doctrine of Operational Art as well as being suited for the new mobile warfare doctrines. The AK-47 was widely supplied or sold to nations allied with the USSR and the blueprints were shared with several friendly nations (the People's Republic of China standing out among these).

After the end of World War II, the United States started looking for a replacement for the M1 Garand, and Thompson submachineguns in the different branches of its armed forces. Early experiments with selective fire versions of both the M1 Carbine and the Garand proved disappointing. The .30-06 round was too uncontrollable in full auto and couldn't be carried in sufficient quantities to support the rate of fire, and fighting in Korea showed that the .30 Carbine was underpowered. American weapons designers reached the same logical conclusion as the Germans and Russians: an intermediate round was necessary. However, American high command insisted that the emphasis be placed on powerful and accurate rounds and thus the .308 Winchester was formally adopted as 7.62x51 NATO. It was around this caliber that the T44E (Derived from the T37, which was in turn a development of the M1 Garand), later adopted as M14 in 1957, was developed. The first confrontation between the AK-47 and the M14 came in the early part of the Vietnam War. Reports from the field that the rifle had too much recoil for automatic fire convinced the Army to adopt a new rifle with lighter, weaker ammunition. This lighter round (5.56 x 45 mm) had equal muzzle energy to that of the AK-47 round (7.62 x 39 mm), and was the product of lethality studies performed on goats in the late 1950s and early 1960s that showed smaller projectiles at higher velocities were more efficient at creating casualties. It should be noted that the designer of the AR-15/M-16, Eugene Stoner, got very little positive feedback from the Army about his design. It was only after the USAF adopted the AR-15 that the Army became interested in the design. This eventually lead to the adoption of the AR-15 as the M16 in 1967.

Conceptual differences

AK-47

The AK-47 was designed to use the production methods that were state of the art in the Soviet Union in the late '40s. This implied that it more or less used the same methods of construction as used for the PPSh-41 and the PPS-43. A common mistake is the claim that the AK-47 was derived from the German Sturmgewehr-44, which it was actually not (however the Sturmhewehr-44 had some good ideas which contributed somewhat to the design). The design of an automatic rifle was in the works in Russia, before World War II even began. The Avtomat Kalashnikov barrel, bolt and receiver was also milled out of a block of steel (which shortly after was changed to metal stampings), adding to its durability but also the weight of the rifle. In order to be able to use a steel grade that was easy to machine, the barrel and bore were hard chromed. The stock was simply made out of wood, which was a non-strategic material. This perfectly fit into the Soviet manufacturing philosophy, where large plants using much untrained labor could manufacture basic weapons cheaply and in very large quantities.

Another feature that is typical of Soviet designed assault rifles is the capability of the AK-47 to keep working no matter how dirty it gets. This can be attributed to the bad experience the Soviet Union had during the early stages of WW2, where it lacked proper ammunition production facilities. Thus, until 1943, the Soviet Union was reduced to using some very poor powders in its ammunition that left much residue in the guns using it. The Soviets also had learned early on that during a major conflict there is little time to train soldiers to keep their weapons clean.

Vietnam war veteran David H. Hackworth recalled: "One of the bulldozers uncovered the decomposing body of an enemy soldier, complete with AK47. I happened to be standing right there, looking down into the hole and pulled the AK out of the bog. "Watch this, guys," I said, "and I'll show you how a real infantry weapon works." I pulled the bolt back and fired 30 rounds - the AK could have been cleaned that day rather than buried in glug for a year or so. That was the kind of weapon our soldiers needed, not the confidence-sapping M-16."

Over time, the AK-47 descendants have been simplified through the use of spot welding and by further reducing the number of machined parts. The Izhevsk factory that manufactures the AK-47 descendants like the AK-101 can manufacture around 8,000 units per night shift. (Or around 24,000 units per day.) Because of its design it is not possible to manufacture the AK-47 series efficiently in small micro plants, due to large amount of metal stamping equipment needed for mass production. However, the AK-47 has been copied and manufactured in small shops all around the world, at the expense of many more man hours per unit.

During the later '50s, when ArmaLite bought the blueprints of the M16, there had been many improvements in the field of machining equipment; the biggest being the introduction of numerical control machines. While aluminum is not as strong as steel, it is lighter and easier to machine.

The objective was to design a new assault rifle that was easy to carry and manufacture in early automated plants using numerical control machining. It was to use a smaller caliber bullet to allow the soldier to carry more ammunition, which increased his firepower while also enabling him to obtain a higher hit probability. The M-16 would achieve all these objectives by using all the latest technologies of its day.

Like the AK-47, the M16 concentrated on full automatic firepower rather than on semi-automatic accuracy. But unlike the AK-47, the M16's 5.56 mm M193 bullet was likely to fragment on impact, such as a hollow point round does, and thus create wounds that were out of proportion for its caliber (the AK round usually only fragments after hitting bone).

Unlike all the other gas operated modern assault rifles, the M16 does not have a separate piston. Rather, it deflects the gases into a small chamber inside the bolt assembly where the rotating bolt acts similar to a piston. This system works well provided that modern clean burning powders are being used in the ammunition. The primary advantage of this system is that it enhances the accuracy of the rifle when fired in full automatic mode. It also reduces the recoil to a very low level. The main disadvantage is that this system will allow carbon to accumulate inside the receiver, which mandates cleaning after each use. One early major improvement was to also hard chrome the barrel and chamber, which reduced spent case ejection problems that were plaguing the very first M16s. Over time, however, many small changes have improved the reliability of the M16. The reliability issues with the M16E1 were worked out later in the Vietnam conflict by re-introducing stick powder into the ammunition, as opposed to ball powder which would swell the cartridge casing and cause jamming. The forward-assist was also added to the M16, in the situation where the bullet gets stuck between the magazine and the barrel in a diagonal position, known as "FTF," or "Failure to feed.". Post-Vietnam the military began tweaking the rifle to perform at its peak without putting in danger the lives of the soldier. The M16A2 now carried a heavier steel milled barrel and a tighter rifle twist (1:7) to allow the use of a heavier projectile, as the new ammunition would now include the modern SS109 62 grain projectile from Belgium. Full-Automatic fire was also taken out of the weapon and 3-round burst was implemented into the weapons system instead. Modern day variants of the M16 are the M16A3 and M16A4 rifles, which now are built with MIL-STD-1913 rails which allow soldiers to easily attach scopes, red dots, and carrying handles. They also accompany a rail system as the fore-grip which is produced by Knights Armament Company. The weapons are now capable of being customized to each soldiers preference, making it a Modular Weapons System.

With the evolution of modern CNC machinery, the M16 can now be manufactured in micro plants. In the US, a number of manufacturers make modern M16 variants and many are indeed micro plant manufacturers. This is possible because of the high degree of automation that can be applied to the machining of the M16 receiver and upper, which are made out of aluminum.

The M16 appeared much later than the AK-47 and thus provided a platform that offered much more development potential than the AK series. Unlike the AK-47, the M16 continues to benefit from every advance in the CNC field, which allows more and more small manufacturers to make M16s and AR-15 rifles. While the M16 is made using aluminum and plastics, it can also be made entirely out of machined steel and wood, at the expense of adding some weight. Where the AK-47 relies on huge Soviet-style, state-run factories, the M16 is ideal for free economy production, spread among many manufacturers around the country, which ensures that it would be very hard for anyone to disrupt US M16 production in the case of a major conflict.

The weight of the AK-47 is 4.3 kg (9.5 lb) without the magazine and is 87 cm (2'10") in length, although the general shape of the rifle and size of the magazine make it uncomfortable to fire in the prone position. The M16A1 model of the Vietnam era weighs 3.6 kg (7.8 lb aprox) with the 30 round magazine and has a length of 100 cm (3'3"). The M16's lighter weight made it easier to carry and to aim quickly (being easier to swing). The later models of the M16 weighed more than the original with the addition of heavier (and more accurate) barrels and more rugged components. The M16A2, for example, weighs 3.99 kg (8.79 lb) loaded. The M16's ergonomics were often considered less comfortable than the AK-47's. However, the AK-47's shorter length may have aided in close quarters combat. In addition, the design of the M16's magazine allows for less comfortable and stable firing from the prone position.

Caliber

The AK-47 was designed to use the 7.62x39 mm Russian cartridge, whereas the M16 was designed for the 5.56x45 mm NATO. This smaller, faster, NATO cartridge should not be confused with the full power 7.62x51 mm NATO round, which was used in other battle rifles of the 1960s and 1970s, and is still used in medium machine guns. In metric caliber designations, these numerals refer to cartridge dimensions. The initial set of numbers refer to the diameter of the actual projectile in millimeters, while the subsequent set of numbers refer to the cartridge case's length.

A quick comparison between cartridges reveals that the faster American cartridge has a significant edge in long range performance and the Russian cartridge with a heavier projectile having better terminal performance due to its larger calibre.

The original ammunition for the M16 was M193 ball, a 55 grain (3.6 g) projectile that exited the muzzle at 3,250 ft/s. It is often stated that this round "would tumble" upon striking a target. At ranges of up to 75 meters the lead cored round is traveling fast enough that the force of striking a body will cause the round to fragment along the cannelure (crimp where the bullet is clamped to the casing) into at least three pieces (front, back, and jacket).

During the 1970s and 1980s the quest for greater accuracy from light machine guns led to the adoption of a heavier, slower, hardened steel cored round, the M855. The heavier 62 grain (4.0 g) SS109 projectile used in the later generation of 5.56x45 cartridges (M855) sacrificed some initial speed (muzzle velocity) but increased the ability of the projectile to penetrate solid targets. However, as a result, a major grievance of American troops in Somalia in 1993 was that the M855 round would drill cleanly through a target without fragmenting.

The 7.62 x 39 mm round weighs in at 122 grains (7.9 g) and on full auto unleashes an enormous amount of fire on opposing combatants. Its drawback is that with the relatively heavy projectile but only an intermediate case length and a consequent smaller relative capacity for the powder charge. Consequently, the ability to hit a target suffers considerably beyond 500 yards because the slower moving bullet flies on a wide looping trajectory.

Firing mode

The AK-47 and M16A1 both have a switch allowing the operator to select semi-automatic or fully automatic mode. The M16A1's selector is a small switch located on the left side of the lower receiver, within reach of the thumb of a right-handed user. The first position is safe, followed by semi-auto, and full-auto. The AK-47's is located on the right side, a large lever pushed up or down. The top-most position was safe, the middle was full-auto, and the bottom semi-auto. The M16's selector can be manipulated with the thumb while firmly holding the pistol grip and forearm. Beginning with the M16A2 model, the ability to select fully automatic fire was replaced by a three-round burst mode to aid in efficiency and accuracy. Some of the later derivatives of M16, such as the M16A3 and the M4A1 have the fully automatic firing mode.

Reliability

The AK-47 has always enjoyed a reputation of reliability. It is gas operated, using the gas from the barrel to push a piston attached to the the bolt carrier, operating the action. The gas tube is fairly large and is visible above the barrel. The AK-47 is often built with generous tolerances, allowing it to function easily in a dirty environment.

The M16, though, had reliability issues in its initial deployment. The direct impingement gas system used by the M16 is similar to normal gas operation but with a few differences. Gas from the barrel is used to cycle the action but lacks the piston, so the gas alone impinges upon the bolt carrier. But the design allows residue to be blown into the receiver as well as quickly accumulating carbon buildup within the gas port channel, comparatively, direct impingement systems will require more frequent cleaning than gas piston systems. The original M16 of the Vietnam era fared poorly in the humid, dirty environment of the Vietnamese jungle. The problems became the target of a Congressional investigation. The results of the investigation found that:

  1. The M16 was billed as self cleaning when it was in fact not.
  2. The lack of a chrome liner for the barrel and chamber created a corrosion problem and contributed to brass case swelling and extraction problems.
  3. The rifle was issued to troops without cleaning kits or instruction on how to clean the rifle.
  4. The rifle was tested and approved with the use of a Dupont IMR powder that was switched to a ball powder that increased both wear and fouling.
  5. Lack of a forward assist rendered the rifle inoperable in combat when it jammed.

When these issues were addressed the reliability issues ceased with the M16 in Vietnam service. Now a custom made Ar-15(almost the same gun, if not actually worse, than the m16) can handle 1100 rounds of straight fire jamming only once or twice. The M16 is an extremly reliable rifle if cleaned and lubricated often, and many of the jamming problems have been solved thanks to the correct distribution of cleaning kits in the armed forces.

Accuracy

The AK47 is generally considered a less accurate rifle, as the loose clearances that increase reliability and decrease manufacturing costs have an impact on accuracy. The relatively heavier recoil of the 7.62x39 cartridge can also be detrimental, not least because operator discomfort with the perceived recoil can require more skill and training to shoot accurately. Even with the lighter recoil and higher velocity of the .223 Remington round, the original M16 and M16A1 did not offer the accuracy that has been achieved with the later M16A2 using the SS109 bullet in semi-automatic mode. The M16 came from the factory shooting with an MOA of 3-4 MOA and under which allowed it to reliably hit targets up to 500 yards.

The "ghost ring" or aperture sights of the later M16A2 are superior to those used on most earlier assault rifles. Using an aperture rear sight, a small hole to center the front blade in, the human eye automatically centers the front sight post, making aiming faster and more consistent. The M16A2's rear sight features two aperture settings. The larger aperture enables faster sighting in poor lighting conditions. The smaller aperture permits more precise aiming for long-distance targets. The AK-47's sights are of a more traditional "open" style. The rear sight is a simple U- or V-shaped notch in which the front post is to be centered. This requires more concentration to use, as both the front and rear sight must be kept in alignment, and must be placed further away from the eye, or the same 'blurring effect' of the aperture sights will hinder performance.

Different Philosophies

The M16 and the AK-47 are designed with different beliefs in mind. Their design, capabilities, and role on the battlefield were reflections of the different experience and doctrine of the United States and the Soviet Union.

The AK-47 was the result of Soviet combat experience during World War II. Studies of battlefield reports showed that most combat occurred within 300 meters, and the winner was usually the side with the most firepower. The bolt-action weapons used on the eastern front were not designed for this kind of combat. The AK-47 was the answer to these reports. It would give the average soldier a high rate of fire, increasing a squad’s firepower tremendously. The AK-47 was never meant to be an accurate rifle beyond 600 meters since in mobile warfare, distances were covered rather quickly. It also had the advantage of not needing particularly experienced soldiers to be effective - the gun required very little maintenance, and accuracy wasn’t very important which was ideal for the large conscript-based Soviet army. Weight wasn't important either because Soviet doctrine placed an emphasis on the use of armored spearheads in an attack, followed closely by troop transports like the BTR-70 (which later culminated in the IFV concept, see M2 Bradley, BMP-2).

The M16, on the other hand, was influenced by the U.S. Army's preference for an accurate semi-automatic weapon. Although the U.S. Army’s studies into World War Two combat accounts came up with very similar results to that of the Soviets', the Army maintained its traditional views and preferred highly accurate weapons. This culminated in the M14. Combat experience in Vietnam showed that this traditional philosophy was anachronistic. A replacement was needed, in the middle between the traditional philosophy of highly accurate semi-automatic rifles, and that of the automatic AK-47. Lighter weight, accuracy and ergonomics were the priority for the American armed forces, and aviation materials were used in its construction, which resulted in higher costs per unit and an overall lower reliability when compared to the simple steel construction of the AK-47. Because American patrols in the thick Vietnamese jungle during the Vietnam War were restricted to foot and later on, helicopter movement, weight was a very important consideration.

as well as some of the more popular aftermarket music wire springs. The
design of the hammer spring will insure reliable ignition under all
circumstances and temperature extremes. The lighter trigger rebound spring
will provide for a smoother & lighter single action trigger pull.

Operating temperatures are important as wire mills do not recommend the use
of music wire when temperatures are 0° F or lower. The maximum service
temperature for music wire is 250° F but spring performance can be affected
at temperatures as low as 175° F. Chrome silicon has a service temperature
range of -100° F to 750° F.



Because of the design parameters, materials & post-winding processing; the
ISMI chrome silicon springs will take a significantly smaller amount of set
than their music wire counter parts.

ISMI recoil springs for the S&W M&P pistols are wound from certified aerospace
spec chrome silicon wire. After winding the springs are heat treated and
stress relieved. The recoil springs utilize rectangular section spring wire
(flat wire) similar to the factory spring. The ISMI springs will work with
the factory guide rod. Spring life should increase 10X when compared to the
music wire counterpart. Spring rates available: 13#, 15#, 17#, 20# & 22#.
